I mean, technically everyone who died took an L. The only characters who took a W were the Japanese Task Force, the SPK, and Ryuk.

"Taking the L" implies that someone took a humiliating loss. So how did any of Ryuk's actions negatively affect him? He literally dropped the notebook specifically to see what a human would do with it for the sake of his own entertainment, and he admitted that he was satisfied with Light's antics because they cured his boredom for a while. Plus he got free apples out of it, so how exactly did Ryuk lose anything?

I admit that L lost to Light. But at the same time, Light just got lucky because of a loophole in his Death Note ownership.

Light took more of an L as L was able to uncover so much and do great things as a detective.
Where light was just destroyed, him and his dreams disappeared.
