I watched the entire show and I had no idea the illusionary world was a thing. I just thought that the girl and robot thing was some kind of symbolism meant to express nagisa and that "story" that her and tomoya wouldn't stop talking about. Also, the orbs of light or whatever were apparently a huge part of the story but i didnt think anything of them at all. So yeah, because of that I thought that this ending was absolutely horrendous. And i still do because i feel like i shouldnt have to look at the forums to figure out from zero that theres actually a "reason" behind it. even with this knowledge, i still think the ending sucks lol

"And i still do because i feel like i shouldnt have to look at the forums to figure out from zero that theres actually a "reason" behind it."

I think it was easy to understand tbh. Every time Tomoya managed to fix things, he always got an orb with Yukine saying that orb would go on to another world(i think, i don't really remember but it has to be something simmilar to that).

While im a huge Clannad fan, it hurts to see you didn't like the ending but you have your opinions and you can't critisize that.

Because remember the little story about Misae and the cat on which the cat guy (idk how to refer to him as) says he has a wish for her and explains is a little light that grants a wish. Then there was also an explanation that was indirectly explained in the anime, where Fujibayashi says she believes in multiple futures, as well as Kotomi explaining dimensions and a different world.

Im pretty sure when Tomoya realized how he had been treating Ushio, he fixed things up and earned a little light, (i dont remember much but i think..).. Before Ushio collapses there is a little light or something, so then after a couple of scenes Tomoya is sent back to an alter universe (as his wish) on which Nagisa survives the birth of Ushio.

Idk thats what I got from it

I loved the ending actually.I wouldnt want tomoya to die and have a The End and show us the lesson that yeah life's miserable and youll die miserable someday.Thats.....interesting for a story to go forward but thats not what clannad goes for.The show did built up the illusionary world as an important side world and only by the end it actually comes into play.Tomoya and the little girl's relationship is beautifully done and i love that the ending throws tomoya in an another world where Nagisa didnt actually die while giving birth. It strengthens it message of no matter how much you struggle no matter what happens, family will always be there for you even in the darkest of times.
So yes, while i didnt get the ending at first,I watched Under The Scope's video on it and got a lot more appreciation for the entire show.
Can completely understand where this is coming from as people back in the day did argue about the ending as well!

I think the ending works fine even if you don't wholly understand it, after all it's directed in such a way as to be interpretable but furthermore something isn't bad just because it requires work on the part of the audience. Art rather then entertainment is meant to be thougth about, it's messages considered and it's content engaged with. Not understanding a show or its appeal should be seen as a great opportunity to learn more or come to a better understanding of a work. There's nothing wrong with watching anime just for entertainment (we all do it for fun) but don't be surprized if more nuanced shows feel shallow if you don't put in the work. It's sort of like trying to passively read a well written book, it's near impossible and you'll probably end up lost or annoyed👍👍.

With Clanned the other world is great both in its objective quality's of boundary pushing visuals, sound effects and directing but also in that it can be seen as entirely symbolic (indeed in series 1 that's almost exactly what it is) but it can also mean something more untangle that speaks to the viewer on a more personal level. That rigth there is just plain good and subtle writing, which is brilliantly produced.

Hope that helps😊👍

Whenever such thread appears, I'd rather just post this video instead of writing an entire essay myself:

Bruh. Lmao. Nothing wrong with multitasking with anime, but if you do, it’s an oof to make a complaint about something plot based (plot-hole or just missing something about the plot). Just the fact that you say “I shouldn’t have to look at forums to figure out X” makes no sense considering the circumstances. Something only fair to say if you were fully attentive and still failed to pick up on X

Ok... but if you get the lights and wish granting thing then how did the arc of Misae and the cat made sense to you?

Just cuz u didn't think it was a part of a story does not make the ending bad lmao. They literally explained the whole lights in Misae and Yukine's arc and the illusionary world was tied to the main story in the end of Clannad S1 and Kotomi's arc too. Kotomi even explains it in Clannad After Story, the episode Nagisa died. People usually criticize people who tell you to pay attention but that's how I honestly feel about people who simply hate on the ending not understanding it. People who hate the Deus ex Machina while understanding the illusionary world are an exception however and if u understand and it and still dislike it then it's fine with me. Ps: Also wanted to say Ushio was the girl and Tomoya was the robot and also Fuuko was tied to the illusionary world too as we see in her sudden awakening in After Story after Ushio and Tomoya reunite aka the girl and the robot.
