I still remember a good chunk of the german version I watched when I was a kid (kodomo no toki) but would I do this eiga (movie) a disservice if I never dabbled in the original japanese version?

I suggest you watch all of the original subbed, as you should.

Otherwise you won't have the proper KIZUNA with this anime and the KOKORO NO YAMI will take over your heart.

I think you should at least know how the series ends or else this movie might be confusing.

I’d reccomend reading the manga or watching the sub first to get all the context as it is really based on the ending. If you do watch the anime to catch up you can skip the filler it’s not too important. I’d also reccomend looking up and Reading Transcend Game before watching the movie as well as it is a prequel story that sets up the movie.

Your nihongo (Japanese) is on point!

You don't need any backstory to necessarily enjoy the movie. I watched it with my little sister 10 years younger than me and she enjoyed the movie for what it was worth. To be able to see these characters progress after years since the show ended only added to my enjoyment!

tldr if you're a Yugioh fan, you're in for a treat. If you're not a fan, it's a decent movie

If you care about the true story of the series, you'll read the manga, which this movie is specifically stated to be a sequel to. The anime adaptation changed the story so much that its in its own canon and contradicts the events in Kazuki Takahashi's manga. It has next to no fanservice, no blood, dead characters stay alive, altered characterizations, etc.

Kazuki Takahashi canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! manga (all 343 chapters) > Transcend Game (2 part prequel to the movie)> The Darkside of Dimensions

If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).
