Sometimes I don't understand how an anime series get a ton of recognition.

I understand anime series that come from large magazine companies such as Shonen Jump, Shonen Magazine, Young Jump, Young Magazine. And anime that had been localised to several various countries (although some are not on MAL top 100 like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh). And Ghibli movies.

But things like Kill la Kill which is an anime original, also at the time, Trigger's most recognisable works would have been Little Witch Academia (small movie) and Inferno Cop. There are also a ton of light novels that when adapted became super popular like Sword Art Online and NGNL.

I guess trigger became popular because a lot of people including me were fans of imaishi and yoshinari from their gainax days and saw trigger as a continuation of that.

sao and ngnl have something particularly attractive about them especially for the gamer audience which overlaps a lot with anime :))

It becomes popular because it becomes one. You'll know it when it's one.

Well when an anime is going to air, probably advertising is a big factor in how much it is talked about, as previously mentioned how recognisable the series or studio is will be a large factor in the animes 'hype' which creates this seasonal hype wave.
Popular Manga/manhwa series from big Magazine such as Shonen Jump announces anime adaptation -> Talks about how epic the animation and art etc will be -> Gets adapted first episodes are hype AF -> good ending -> an anime that then gets recommended by the people that watch it, Its important that this step is fulfilled otherwise it won't become insanely popular because obviously if it isn't getting recommended not many people will watch it.

It becomes popular if it has mass appeal. As for trigger, it is supposed to be the spiritual successor to gainax which have their fair share of original work which is really popular(eva, ttgl etc) hence their works are popular too.

I'll throw in my two cents and say one of the reasons is thanks to sites and forums like YouTube, Reddit and Twitter.

Let's take KnY episode 19 for example as it's only been just over a year and the show is nearly at 1M members on MAL (idk if that's a record or not, but still a massive feat). It exploded on Twitter for millions of people to see as it was on the main trending tab for so many countries (especially in the US). Even super popular figures like Ninja with millions of followers gave the show it's praises causing potentially tens or hundreds of thousands of people to check it out. Reddit is quite similar as the episode post could have gotten to the main page with enough upvotes and interactions.

A clip of the main fight on YouTube got several million views within the first week or two, and was the talk of the town for many Youtubers and reaction channels for the next month. So that's another few million people that are exposed to the show.

So if tens of millions of people are exposed to the show, more people are gonna be interested and watch the series. And by looking at the manga sales, it's safe to say that it's thanks to these sites that the series gained massive popularity in no time at all, even as the manga is relatively new at the time.

Sword Art Online has a great concept. It came out in 2012, a time when VR was nothing but a dream. At that time a story like SAO was actually really amazing if you think about it. It received good support from Japan, I'd go as far to say that it is one of the most popular anime of all time in Japan. It didn't take time for it to become very popular in the west as well as any other place. Even if SAO isn't technically an isekai, it made that genre popular, WAY popular.

To be specific, an anime gets popular when it has something really extraordinary about it. Take Demon Slayer as an example, why did it become so popular? What was extraordinary about it? Of course, the animation, to be more specific, episode 19. The same thing happens with a lot of other anime. Darling in the FranXX was also an original from Trigger, what was so extraordinary about it that it got so popular? The characters, Zero Two to be more specific. She was the only reason I watched DITF and I'm pretty sure a lot of other people like me did the same thing.
