So... That's a bit complicated, but that was an awesome pun... please bear with me...

First, the girl hate ambiguity.
The boy is name Shiro. He chose black, so she was white (shiro in Japanese).
They got a draw, which is, well, ambiguous by nature. Neither won, but neither lost.
The goal of othello is to fill the board so that the majority is you color, so they ended with the board 50% white and 50% black.
He asked the kids to paint the pieces white (shiro). So, all the pieces that were "black" would have been white, which would have made her win with 100% of the board. But then, you would say "White win!"... In Japanese, that would be ambiguous, because white (shiro) is the same as the boy's name (Shiro). So it's STILL ambiguous. :P
Which is a way to tell her: No, white is not always white, it's sometimes something else.

BTW, That became one of my favorite manga ever.
