Just wondering if the 13 ep OVAs (I assume you start there) can be watched without having any experience with the novels? Would anything make sense and is it a worthy watch?

Yes you can, you might be left out on some things, but i don't remember it being hard to follow at all. I've seen the OVA's a dozen times. They fill you in plenty

Finally thread about my favourite anime.

I suggest you to watch the TV series too. It's very good fantasy that we couldn't get nowadays.
A "High Fantasy" just like Lord of the Rings movie.

Maybe it's because my expectations were low but it's been impressive right from the get go. That old school bitchin art and classical bgm? Hell yeah. Lord of the Rings feels pretty accurate. Why the fuck is this one never mentioned???
