Visual imagery of Hiorshima bombing was superb.

Guadalcanal seems important pivotal point now. Takumi I hope you're not plotting something big.

The dialogues in the series are not really intricate but they carry some really deeper meanings, one birthplace referring to Japan and say slyly implying that even if history changes we are of the same country.

I love how Oguri went in and bonded with soldiers of the older generation. Olders soldier "Gei" and "Rei" talk highlight the conditions of that era. Gei = geisha ( prostitutes in that time) and Rei = Restaurant (self explanatory I hope)
I don't know why people write that they are approachable persons,
if you were you wouldn't be on MAL.

Extended families or lovers on MAL are a farce.

This is a chapter where the historical fiction is too influenced by how history was remembered as opposed to how things actually happened. Guadalcanal was not an important island until the Americans took it. By this point in the war, the Japanese Imperial Army was expanding without care and sent engineers to build air bases on pretty much any island where it was viable. The Imperial Japanese Headquarters in Tokyo didn't even know where Guadalcanal was because it was such an unimportant operation. Japan fought hard for the island not because it was important, but because their strategy was to force a decisive battle and defeat the US Navy when able. The result was a long series of skirmishes that broke that decimated the pre-war navies of both the US and Japan. This worked in the US's favor because they could build better ships faster and recovered shortly. Japan never did.

This ep felt like the calm before the storm, the SDF and Imperial Navy are sharing some bonding time together, and each grows closer to one another. Although you barely knew of these men's names, you can just sense how humane these characters are, especially with the atmosphere.

At this point, history is surely gonna be altered for good. To carry the burden of an alternate outcome and be faced with what seems to be eternal isolation from the 21st century that the Miari crew has known of, it's only right for Masayuki to worry and owner of what's to come for them. However I have to applaud Yosuke for this one, his conviction as a member of the SDF is unshaken, although he is at the mercy of fate, as of right now he already found his goal.

Have to disagree. I think the CGI cloud looks pretty crummy.

Oguri's dissimulation led to an interesting scene. I presume by saying modern Japanese appreciate the men of that era he's actually talking about their efforts after the lost war to rebuild the country.

Good historical context. I'd add that the idea of stopping the war by ruining the attempt of the US to invade Guadalcanal seems naive. In real history Japan has only recently been prevented from invading Port Moresby by sea and is currently trying to do so by land instead. As far as the Allies know an invasion of Australia is next. The Japanese never actually wanted to do that, but the Allies can't know that so the notion that they'll give up while under that threat is silly.

If the crew of the Mirai wants the war to end as soon as possible I don't see how that can be done without addressing Japan's greed for empire in some way. I'm surprised that it was Kusaka who has to be the one to suggest Japan retreat to prevent the battle.

I could also add that the soldiers on Guadalcanal are Imperial Army, not Navy, and the two branches of the Imperial military historically cooperated very poorly, down to both branches having its own small version of its counterpart as a support force (Army warships and Navy ground forces). They didn’t even use any of the same designs of things like aircraft. Indeed one of the reasons Vice-Admiral Mikawa retreated from the battle described in the briefing (called the Battle of Savo Island in English-language history) may be due to prioritizing preserving the navy's ships over supporting the army on the island. If the following episode portrays Admiral Yamamoto as unambiguously being able to order army personal to withdraw from Guadalcanal it’ll be outright absurd.

EDIT: Later episodes revealed my mistake; there aren't any Imperial Army troops on the island at this point, just Imperial Navy engineers.
