Well I finally got to watching the 2006 Silent Hill adaptation. I actually somewhat enjoyed it, even with all the cg.

2012 (Ryōhei Kurosawa as Onizuka)

Err, which GTO? Aren't there three different series or something?

shipgirls | May 31, 2015 12:28 PM
I've only seen GTO, it's great. Watch it.

My favorite movie adapted directly from a manga is Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge. I still can't decide if it's really good or really bad, but either way, it's a fun watch.

I haven't seen too many dramas.

Pretty much. He says in an interview that it's very loosely based on it's source material. I haven't read the manga though so I wouldn't know. Either way it's great.

As for live action adaptation, Nodame Cantabile and Kenshin are indeed among the best Japan ever produce. Most adaptation are usually either simply bad or just way too cheesy when we see real people acted out the scene out of the anime/manga.

For me, the adaptation differ greatly from the original source except for the initial premise (guy got kidnapped for years, then go out for revenge). Everything after he got released is really different, both in execution and atmosphere. Chan-wook's is more a gritty and dark thriller/action, while the original source is more of mystery thriller kinda like how monster is.

And speaking about live adaptation, looks like Korea is starting to adapt more and more popular manga/anime lately. Some are good since they are less cheesy than their japan counterpart imho.

Ah idk why I didn't think of that. The whole Vengeance Trilogy though is great. Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance is probably my favorite.

Oh, right. I always forget that Old Boy was originally a manga.

I've watched 2 or 3 of the live action one hour episodes of Nodame Cantabile and it wasn't that bad. I haven't had time to go back to finish it, but many of the drama fans seem to say good things. Since the discussion is live action anime, one my favorites still is Honey and Clover, but the best adaption from a manga is probably Chan-wook Park's version of Old Boy. I also really enjoyed the Space Battleship Yamato (2010) film most recently.
Mushi-Shi: The Movie (2006) was visually interesting and took an interesting approach that I enjoyed.

Tsuiokuhen is still the best thing that happened to Kenshin.

Lindle | May 30, 2015 1:53 PM
I've seen a few live-action adaptations. Most were terrible. Kenshin is easily the best I've seen thus far.

shipgirls | May 30, 2015 12:59 PM
It's a series but I'm curious about the live action Nodame Cantabile.

Luna_Sparkle | May 29, 2015 4:17 PM
Live action anime adaptations, huh? Most of the ones I've seen have been pretty bad, but that seems to be the majority from what I've heard.

I've heard Gantz was pretty good. Also heard of live-action something or other Princess Jellyfish, not sure if it's a movie or TV show.

Has anybody else seen the live-action Higurashi movies? I thought the first one wasn't as bad as people claim it is, but the second one is pretty crap.

Forever waiting on the Hellraiser reboot

Lindle | May 28, 2015 2:29 PM
I watched the first one before I watched the anime. It's actually better.

The second and third adapt the only good part of the anime so the second isn't quite as good, even if it does benefit from removing the worst parts of the anime. Haven't seen the third yet.

But yeah, it's definitely worth watching them. Moreso if you're not already a fan because you'll probably be bugged by the stuff they changed. Viewed on its own terms it's a really enjoyable movie.

shipgirls | May 28, 2015 1:55 PM
Are those any good? (Would they be from a non anime fan?)

Lindle | May 28, 2015 1:46 PM
Just watched the second live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie. Why did they cut Aoshi out of the first movie only to introduce him in the second?

shipgirls | May 28, 2015 12:56 PM
In other news I watched Bedevilled the other night. Pretty good.
And just when you thought

Popka | May 26, 2015 7:38 PM
I thought it was a good film. Not one of my favorites, or one I would call one of the greatest films of all time. Parts of it are clunky and it's not very interesting cinematically. I would only watch it if you enjoyed other films by Charlie Kaufman, and even then it's a lot stranger than his other films.
