karambia | Feb 15, 2020 11:15 AM
yeah, thing still very scarce and it kind obvious the most of them not gonna get sub somewhere even until next year.
i quiet like destruction babies(i believe i had talked much about this before) - and i feel miss to see sosuke ikematsu.

i also notice the main guy from that movie, ryo narita also seems everywhere last year. http://asianwiki.com/Ryo_Narita

To the Ends of the Earth has been on my watchlist for a while. Hopefully it's a return to form for Kurosawa. Can't see it available anywhere yet though. I wasn't much a fan of Destruction Babies, but I will watch anything with Yu Aoi. Farewell Song is another I have heard a bit about. Seems like Nana Komatsu is in a lot of movies these days.

here they are, the 10 best picked by kinejun
1. It Feels so Good (火口の ふたり)
2. Another World (半世界)
3. From Miyamoto to You (宮本から君へ)
4. A Girl Missing (よこがお)
5. Listen to the Universe (蜜蜂と遠雷)
6. Farewell Song (さよならくちびる)
7. One Night (ひとよ)
8. Just Only Love (愛がなんだ)
9. RANDEN: The Comings and Goings on a Kyoto Tram (嵐電)
10. To the Ends of the Earth (旅のおわり世界のはじまり)

https://windowsonworlds.com/2020/02/11/kinema-junpo-announces-93rd-best-10-for-2019/

a feast for lowkey drama I guess.
there two that catch my attention the most for now: Tetsuya Mariko(destruction babies) back with From Miyamoto to You, that also brought from tv dorama the same year, and starred Sosuke ikematsu+yu aoi; and just like me, kinejun clearly has bias with kiyoshi kurosawa with To the Ends of the Earth .

karambia | Feb 3, 2020 7:23 AM
i believe the kinjeun list will out around this feb.
i want to catch some of last year if not for lack of sub--hvent check some of it back. I already check every day a good day back then but just let it slip away :') . there also The Chrysanthemum and the Guillotine available in mubi but idk hw my phone kinda messed up with the app so i just left it pass.
im almost forget sosuke ikematsu was on killing. im probably will look on tht sometime

so far I believe nana and go were good to decent, but usually has a likeable presence.

I think garden of words change my perspective for Shinkai , but it's not like it was great, just kind of fine. I'm usually not fond for romance and his story in general just turn kind of flat for my consideration.

Touka | Jan 30, 2020 7:51 AM
I didn't really like Shinkai's early work until 5 Centimeters per Second, but since then I think he's had an interesting output, though I haven't seen Weathering with You either.

Family of Strangers sounds interesting, I like Nana Komatsu and Go Ayano, though they don't really have any outstanding performances.

When does the Kinejun list get posted? There's still some I want to see from last years (Killing, Every Day a Good Day)!

karambia | Jan 30, 2020 5:50 AM
Never bf of shinkai, but i observed. Maybe later this year i still end up checking Weathering with you xD.
I havent watched titles from last year too, and still too desperate for kinejun's list. Best pic nominee its seem family of stranger is stereotypical jp movie that i like and box office hit fly me to saitama probably we can expect another fresh over the top comedy.

Touka | Jan 29, 2020 2:27 PM
I haven't watched many Japanese films lately, but I hear the box office last year was very good. Shinkai is trailblazing recently.

karambia | Jan 28, 2020 7:35 PM
best picture nominee from 43rd Japan Academy Prize
Kingdom
The Journalist
Fly Me to the Saitama
Family of Strangers
Listen to the Universe

still waiting kinejun to kill that lineup

EratiK | Feb 9, 2019 2:24 AM
Andou is such a babe. I remember when I first saw her in Love Exposure, how much she's grown, I'm so proud.

Touka | Feb 7, 2019 7:05 AM
Yeah, Lee Chang-dong and Haruki Murakami are a great mix. There are some good short films based on his work, but I think Burning is the first feature length movie to really get it right.

Wilderness looks interesting. There's a lot of films I'm hoping will be subbed one day, but mostly I'd love to watch Asleep with Sakura Ando. I have the novel it's based on by Banana Yoshimoto, so maybe I should just read that and watch it without translation.

I thought Birds Without Names was decent. It's quite hammy in parts and I thought nearer the end it became a little ungainly (the drama felt rather manufactured and unnecessary), but there were some good performances. I'm a big fan of Yu Aoi and it was interesting to see her play such an unpleasant character.

Did you see Over the Fence? I still haven't watched it.

karambia | Feb 5, 2019 9:26 PM
i feel like lee chang dong really know how to play with the material. Its subtle, kind of surreal, with strong feel uncertainty~ ambiguity. I mean even for fact like that Steven yeun's enigmatic character that proclaimed himself as arsonist not even one single time set the fire, at least onscreen. if that really his intention or he just trolling around as the whole matter was like speaking figuratively for him. That also being said there were lot murakami trademarks if i nods correctly. Those already spark my interest with more of murakami's tbh.

for korean cinema has been very impressive in last two decades, more and more reasons degenerating oscars lol

yeah at least they still have context, geographically. Award basically still nice way to help filtering and weighing some or most well made stuff, but not to take it popularity contest and winning loser mentality so seriously.

i agree, it was fun movie so typical of him :D. The other i still longed two see from 2017 is hanagatami and wilderness(part 1, 2). Seems there aren't any sub yet. What do you think regard bird without names?

Touka | Jan 24, 2019 6:39 AM
I loved Burning also. In my top three from last year. I am a big fan of Haruki Murakami and probably liked it even more than his original story. Sad to see it wasn't Oscar nominated, though it made the shortlist. Just reminds me how underwhelming the Academy Awards are, really. South Korea has never, ever had a film nominated. At least the Japan Academy doesn't pretend to represent the world of cinema. Awards are basically popularity contents at the end of the day.

I still haven't seen Side Job. There's a few I'm still missing from 2017/2018. I watched Shinobu Yaguchi's Survival Family last month. I haven't watched a film of his in years, but I enjoyed it so much. You know what you're in for with a Yaguchi film, but he still manages to surprise you. Really funny and really quite tender in parts.

karambia | Jan 23, 2019 9:39 PM
i see. yeah that's why im not rushed it for now but its will be really tempted if its already subbed. this like my case last time with lee chang dong's burning(got the russian dubbed) lol but its still great movie overall.

so the US comes in february, maybe i get the date wrong. man i really cant for it :D
one cut of the dead was really impressive for its success, somehow reminiscene the genre independent nature in the past. probably im just bit fed up with the stereotypical japan melodramatic-sentimentality but i really enjoy it from creativity standpoint, the fun of fimaking something like that.

i remember read so much for her from cannes jury last year. really hype for her. yeah so many underrated actress/actor around especially in asia. oscar already has much problem itself, like its audiences decline, voter bias, not to talk all this political agenda that came so noisy lately. while we know US hegemony in international film industry and the prestigious nature of it that still strong, but im pretty tired of as we can see ppl often mistaken it as global-representative award something like that. there no perfect award of course. japan academy prize itself is not like did any better locally, like often overlooked small or independent ones like last year side job for example(the best from lst year imo), but they still lucky for have some class filmakers like koreeda, anno, lee sang il etc to save their days.

Touka | Jan 23, 2019 12:28 PM
No, not yet. I also saw that Reddit post. Surprised the film is still so hard to get a hold of, but I'd be a little apprehensive about watching a Chinese version (assuming it's dubbed). There are a lot of impressive performances in the film that would be tarnished somewhat with dubbing.

I am surprised it isn't out until March in Japan. That's also when it's released on DVD/Bluray in the UK. It's released in the US on February 12th, so I'm sure it'll become available online around then (with English subs).

I really loved One Cut of the Dead. Very impressive that it grossed over 1,000 times its budget, even before home media or streaming is available. I look forward to Shinichiro Ueda's next work.

That said, Shoplifters is probably the best film in every category it's nominated. I just hope Sakura Ando wins, because she is truly brilliant. It was, without a doubt, my favourite film from last year, largely because of her. There's an important scene that is entirely improvised by her, and she's so captivating. If it was up to me, she deserves an Oscar nomination, but sadly Asia is barely represented at the Oscars.

@Touka
so there isnt a torrent in avistaz yet?
i had found since couple of months back kind of chinese torrent of it(bet it wasnt a good vers) but seems till now there isnt eng sub. there reddit poster already asking about that's why im curious if avistaz have/havent pick it yet
https://www.reddit.com/r/subtitles/comments/9f875z/need_shoplifters_2018_subtitles/

too bad i missed the limited screening here T_T. the infos came late since the festiv wasnt on the city nearby. well i guess it worth wait until march(for bluray release if imnot mistaken)

any opinion regard japan academy prize for this year?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42nd_Japan_Academy_Prize
i believe koreeda's will sweep things again like last year. i love how standard of japanese movie keep being safe if not for his works. also hope ando to snatch this one again :D
there also neat hit one cut of the dead. im not put it highly but i guess its just worthy inclusion from last year especially for indie that break mainstream box office

Touka | Jan 17, 2019 9:18 AM
No English sub on Avistaz. In fact, there isn't even a torrent on there yet. Really happy it got a decent release where I am. Can't wait to watch it again.

karambia | Jan 7, 2019 8:26 PM
Is there already eng sub of shoplifters in Avistaz anyone?
