Fate/Zero
Anime Relations: Fate/Zero, Fate/Zero 2nd Season
I'm on episode 21, and I have one major gripe:
Holy shit this series is sexist.
Seriously. I'm not just saying that- I mean, okay, nearly ALL anime is sexist because it's country of origin is, sadly, very sexist, but good LORD F/Z is just... Really sexist. I'm going to say that in terms of sexism, it's worse than SAO.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, you ask?
Because SAO is pure fanboy wish fulfillment. F/Z isn't. F/Z is trying to tell a serious story with serious characters, but I just can't take it seriously because it's SO. INCREDIBLY. SEXIST. Every single female is either useless, pathetic, a plot device, or belittled in some way. Or just brutally murdered because LOL GRIMDARK. But I'll get to that later.
When Saber first appears everyone says "OMIGAWD UR KING ARTHUR KEWWWLLL!!!" until they inevitably decide that she is flawed because she is a woman and every mistake she ever made, which they didn't seem to care about until they discovered she was female, was because she was female. Seriously. Rider was all over her until he decided that she didn't fit his ideals and instead of telling her this in a normal way he just belittles her for being a woman and attributes all her mistakes to being female.
Maya is there just to serve as a psuedo love interest, I guess, but she does like nothing. No personality and no real backstory to speak of- As far as I'm concerned she didn't even need to be IN the series.
White-haired chick is weak, and oh God that scene where she's on the circle and she thanks what's-his-face for coming to see her with no trace left in her voice or face regarding the fact that when we last saw them together she was PISSED at him, for good reason.
Assasin chick was pretty cool in what's his face's story, but then they threw in "oh I really just wanted to be a mother! I didn't know it but that was my deep wish all along!" In any other series, this would have been cute. However, due to F/Z's track record for the way it treats it's women, it was just sexism. Pure and simple.
Shirly was cool, I guess, but she felt like she was only a plot device and only a psuedo-love-interest.
