Anime Relations: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
I don't understand why people use "cliché" as a way to degrade an anime. I dislike it when people use clichés just to prove their point. I know it's not original and get too predictable at times, but I feel like it can be good if it is executed properly. For example Gurren Lagann, it has a ton of cheesy and cliché moments, but it has a good story and it bring a good development for Simon. I think the cheesiness make Gurren Lagann a great anime. I want to know what's other people opinion about it.

Cliche's are not bad in itself. i think it's merely used to dismiss anything as bad because it's "too mainstream". Cliche's are just tools to set up plot.

for example, you know how in romance anime the main girl is always late and runs to school with a piece of toast on her mouth and bumps into the male lead? you could go for a yu yu hakusho start and have her bump into him riding a car, killing her, starting a boy meets ghost revenge story.

doing it straightforward would obviously be boring because it's been done before, and done better.

for another example on the non-anime side, Megamind is basically thestandard superhero hero vs villain cliche which was set up to answer the question "without a hero, what would his arch nemesis do?"

if Metroman was the hero it'll be watching a lame ripoff of superman.

I totally agree. I don't mind if an anime has cliches. If it's executed properly, then I don't mind them one bet. The only time when I hate cliches is when it's executed in a very similar way with other anime. Example would be that the main male in a harem is usually dense and it takes forever for him to realize that one of the girls, if not, all of them like him. I've seen this cliche in various series and it gets annoying because I feel like I'm watching the same thing as before, just with slightly different character types and art design. Some anime can still follow this cliche but is able to do it in a way that is very enjoyable which is what I want to see.
It sucks that people automatically degrade an anime because of cliches. Probably because they've seen tons on anime with the same old cliches and when they notice them in a new series, they automatically degrade without giving it a chance.
