3-gatsu no Lion
Overall, this is a great anime. The shogi element is cool- it's basically a Japanese version of chess and it makes it into a sports anime at times when it focuses on the game. The first part of this season is extremely strong- especially the relationship between our main character and the three sisters who befriend him. The characters are done very well- they're complex and believable and have interesting back stories. There's some fun comedy throughout. The animation is fantastic with a watercolor sort of style. I dig the whole competive board game premise. On the downside, the anime doesn't have much of an arc through the first season. It seems to follow the manga closely and it has a very manga feel with the short chapter breaks and the feeling that it could just go on and on introducing characters and arcs in perpetuity.

3-gatsu no Lion 2nd Season
The anime is still good in its second season but the bullying arc that forms most of the first half is easily the worst part of the series. On the plus side, it's still beautiful, the characters are still good and interesting, and once it gets back on track in the second half of the season it's very good again. I could see a third season being great and I don't think the bullying arc takes much away from the quality of the series as a whole, but it's tough not to ding this season a point or two when I didn't enjoy half of it.

Akira
Perhaps THE classic anime. Akira is just out of this world, especially for 1988. The animation quality is amazing, again especially for the time. The music is great. The world feels rich and dense and alive. The story is some crazy sci-fi with some gore. The only negative I can think of is that the plot seems a little condensed, even at a rather long 2 hours. I'd like to read the manga for the full story. Anyway, it's fun to imagine watching this in 1988, it would have been mindblowing, it still kind of is.

Angel Beats!
Quite a good short 13 episode series. At first what pulled me in was the comedy which is especially strong through the first part of the series and thankfully it remains funny throughout the more dramatic and story-packed second half. So it pulls off the sometimes sad and touching, sometimes goofy and funny combination that anime seems to do so well. The characters are pretty good and quite a bit happens for such a short series.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
This is a ghost story but not of the usual spooky sort. Instead this is a rather emotional drama involving a group of high school kids. It kind of reminds me of Erased with the flashbacks to their childhoods and we see how they've changed and remained the same. It would have been better to have the child versions of the characters better developed. I liked the angle of the ghost being our main protag's conscious which they do early on. The production values are great. It's melodramatic, which I tolerate much better in anime than in other media. It was fine until the last couple episodes and then it just became a little to much.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
This has a very weird premise but it works very well. It's a convoluted set-up but it ends up feeling like a coming-of-age high school type deal with a great teacher helping a bunch of kids who have been relegated to E-class. But it also mixes in some fighting and violence, but for the most part this doesn't fith the shonen battle anime mould. It's got some fun weirdness and the characters are pretty good- the teachers and Kuro-sensei especially, the students themselves are less interesting. The anime is quite good but loses its way a bit in the arc that ends the series. I still enjoyed this quite a bit. I'm not sure where it could go from here but I've heard the second season is good so I'm on board.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu 2nd Season
This is about on par with the first season. The animation is very high quality. The premise is weird but it works. A lot is explained in this season. The explanation is fine but also not that amazing- I was kind of digging the unexplained weirdness of the whole thing. Also much like the first season, I don't think the ending arc (with the exception of the actual end- the last two episodes) works that well for it. At it's best it's a fun, funny, coming of age, school anime, mixed with a lot of weirdness and action. Overall it's very solid and close to being bumped up a rating. But I think that when it goes off track and the students become a and elite squad trying to accomplish some mission then it gets significantly worse and, like the first season, I was starting to check out during the final third, although, again, the last couple episodes bring the series to a close quite nicely.

Ao no 6-gou
This anime has such a 90's aesthetic- the CGI looks like cut scenes from a PS1 game. It's bad but nostalgic and retro and it's hard for me to not like it. I think this could have been a little longer and the characters could have had a little more room to breath and time to develop. A lot is explained but it also leaves you with some gaps to fill in. It's rather trippy and weird and I like that. Not great, but not bad at all either and definitely worth a watch, especially if you dig the older stuff- I do.

The show has a cool style. And occasionally there is some really cool animation. It's split into several multi-episode arcs, each involving a different paranormal problem to be confronted by our main character. It's also a pretty good quirky romance at times. For the most part it's low-key. It's very talky and can be a little slow at times. But for the most part it's interesting enough to hold my attention. Pretty good overall. As a side note, the logical ending episode seems to be 12. 11 starts a new arc. 12 wraps up the overall story/romance arc. Then 13-15 finish the arc started in 11. 13-15 were apparently not aired but instead were officially placed on the internet.

An anime about the adventures of some modern day pirates. The premise of a Japanese salaryman becoming part of the crew is interesting. And this seems like something I'd really like but it never really came together for me. I guess the characters aren't all that great. This is really a continuation of the first season and my earlier comments apply to this too. I thought this was the type of thing I'm inclined to like, but maybe not. This anime is a mess. It has a kind of fun concept- superpowers but they're all lame. Could have been a good idea for a comedy. It settles into an okay rhythm. Then everything gets upended several times. It's surprising at least. I feel like I would have really dug this when I was a teenager back in the late 90's or early 2000's. Maybe I'm just jaded now. It looks nice but I'm not a huge fan of the super-big squared off eyes and sort of washed out look. But after a few episodes none of that bothered me. Clannad: After Story
The first part of this is very similar to the original series. When it gets into Tomoya and Nagisa's life after high school it becomes much better. It makes me wonder why there aren't more stories like this- just about people falling in love, getting married, working blue collar jobs, trying to do the right thing, experiencing happy and sad times. Of course there is a little bit of a supernatura/alternate universe thing going on but it's mostly in the background. When it does come into the main story I think it works pretty well. Anyway, I don't think any movie or tv show or anime has every made me cry, except for Clannad After Story and it happened twice. So I'd say it's pretty effective. I think you could see this as being little emotionally manipulative. But on the other hand it seems that you don't really appreciate a person in your life or your situation in life unless you experience or can seriously consider the loss of that person or a change in that situation.

Quite a mixed bag. The series has lots of positives. I think overall, it's a solid mecha anime. There's some interesting supernatural stuff going on but none of it is really explained in the first season and it ends on a big cliffhanger too. It's done in a sort of cheesy and over-the-top way which I dig. I also like Lelouch's arc from mostly hero to mostly villain. The main problem I have with it is that it feels choppy- like the pacing is too fast. This seems to be more of a problem with the second season but it applies to the series as a whole. Scenes are very short, there's a bunch of characters (each of whom know or partially know or don't know different information and each of which have different and shifting allegiances), and basically just a bunch of stuff going on in different places. And the anime has these very quick scenes which jump around between all the different characters. And the plot moves fast. I'm basically a Trigger fanboi so take this with a grain of salt but this anime kicks major ass. Animation is top notch. It's strangely transgressive in a way that seems very aware of the current clownworld state of things and that is why opinions of it are somewhat divided. The beginning is especially good and then it gets into some equally good quiet character development and romance episodes. Then there's an exposition dump before the batshit ending few episodes. A little hard to describe. It's very talky. And it's basically a psychological thriller and more specifically a cat and mouse game between two people. Interesting concept about judgment of people after death. The first episode is pretty dark, and it remains a bit dark throughout, but the tone lightens up somewhat. Generally it's not about who wins and who goes for reincarnation and who goes to the void but instead is about these little character studies. It seems like a pilot or proof of concept for a bad 80's or early 90's anime. It's not particularly unwatchable or agonizing or boring since it's 18 minutes. It's just that there's absolutely no reason to watch this or for it to exist. Again, it seems like some kind of preliminary thing that a studio might produce internally to quickly explore an idea. One hell of an anime. Super over-the-top, violent, and bloody. Very cool. But it does seem like the plot drags a bit and is stretched a little thin over 10 long episodes and it probably could have been trimmed a little bit.

This is a very solid short anime at 11 episodes. It's a bit of a mystery throughout, although the main aspects are revealed about four episodes in. It perhaps doesn't have that much of an arc- essentially just more and more details about what is going on are revealed. The plot deals with some contemporary (in 2009) issues in Japanese society which is kind of interesting. The characters are good. It reminds me of Terror in Resonance but this is a little better. Definitely worth a watch especially since it's so short and tight.

I like ecchi elements in an anime where it isn't the main focus and just adds to the craziness (something like Kill la Kill). This is more of a straight-ahead traditional ecchi where the ecchi is more of a focus. In fact at first it seems like there's little else going on. The whole thing is rather generic but it does get better as the series progresses. I'm also a little put off by the blurred out or artificially covered up nudity. It's better to just be ecchi with extremely scantily clad girls, underwear, etc. Despite its problems, the show is very watchable. It's fast paced, occasionally funny, and worth a watch.

This looks like a horror anime but it comes off as more of a mystery. There are a bunch of short arcs, some of which take place in alternate timelines. After a fast and crazy beginning arc, the anime settles down and slowly develops its characters and starts revealing bits of the mystery. It kept my attention despite occasionally not completely making sense and I was interested to find out more details of what was going on. With that said, the anime is a bit jumbled and slow at times. It's a mixed bag but ultimately worth a watch.

This is a fascinating look at Japan in the final days of WWII. It's an obvious masterpiece, I think mostly because of its realistic feel and because it mostly resists the temptation to be overly melodramatic. This is an excellent long shonen anime. It's one that really would be entertaining for kids but it's interesting to watch as an adult too. It's a kind of weird fantasy world that reminds me of something that might be from an 80's Japanese video game. The vibe I'm thinking of is something like Alex Kidd in Miracle World from Sega Master System or something like that. The best things it has going for it are the cool eclectic world and the variety in the story arcs. It's the kind of world kids would want to make the backdrop of their own adventures. And although there is the occasional drawn out battle, for the genre this is quite fast moving and there's always something cool and new happening.

I like sports anime and this is basically a sports anime about street racing. Ironically, the show is rather slow paced but it builds up very nicely. There's some teen drama that feels surprisingly realistic. The characters are nicely developed. The animation isn't that great but it doesn't really matter. The 1998 CG cars are bad too but it's all somehow kind of charming. Of course it has all the things I like about sports animes- the rivalries, the actual races, etc- are all here and work well.

The first season of Initial D isn't the greatest looking show- but it's good enough that it overcomes any technical flaws. Somehow in the second season they made it look even worse. I could see some argue that the animation is better, but although it's cleaner, it's not as charming and the change is quite jarring. The story is still good but it's still kind of slow paced. It's close to the quality of the first season- it's basically a continuation of everything that was going on previously. Jojo takes itself seriously and it's also crazy and fantastic and bizarre. The manga these arcs are based on are from back in the 80's and it it definitely has a retro feel, which I dig, but with modern production values. Great animation and music. It's hard to describe. But it's sort of like a manly 80's super-hero shonen but made in 2012. And it's campy. Although its campiness doesn't feel intentional- kids would enjoy this for just what it is. But as an adult I really appreciate all the weirdness. Its just trying to be the most entertaining and stylish shonen possible. It has the weird feel of some euro-sleaze satanic sex film- like Jess Franco stuff. I dig that kind of stuff. And that's a better reference point than what you usually think of as anime. For a lot of its runtime I was thinking it was really great. But with about 20 minutes left it seems to loose its way. Tightened up to about 1 hour this would have been great. It just lingers a little too long. Also, although it's tastefully done and is not similar to what you usually think of as hentai, this is an erotic cartoon and so it's not something you're likely to break out and watch with various groups of people.

This is one of Ghibli's good ones. I'm actually tempted to bump up my rating. I think this movie is a little underrated because it's perhaps not anime enough. It's an adaptation of an old children's book, "The Borrowers" which I know I read as a kid and which has been adapted into several films. So, while it takes place in Japan, it's much more western than most anime. But I love the idea of a world in miniature underneat our own. The borrowers lives are fantastic fun to imagine. The manga is certainly better but it's an all-time great after all and I think this does a pretty impressive job of bringing the golden age arc to life. I like the somewhat retro look and handdrawn style, even if it uses a lot of stills and pans. The music is probably worth a 10 all on it's own. Susumu Hirasawa's music is so awesome I just wanted to hear more of it. I think if you saw this before reading the manga you'd probably still like it but it might be a little bewildering- not that it's hard to follow, but the tone and plot are kind of strange and their slightly condensed here so you have less time to settle in. So I'd recommend reading the manga first.

Kill la Kill
Sort of a parody of several things, most obviously of how seriously school life is taken in Japan with the school becoming a sort of military dictatorship run by the student council president. There's other references here too like the parody of Sailor Moon in the transforming scene. Part comedy, part action and both parts really hold their own- its funny and the action kicks ass.. The basic concept is that school uniforms have powers depending on your status in the school. Our heroine has a kamui, a sort of unlicensed uniform that is super powerful and that only she can wear. She is just awesomely cool and she takes down the various club presidents in fights. So sort of a fighting anime although it doesn't exactly fit that mold either. It is completely over the top, like you can't get any more over the top. It is ecchi enough that you might be a little embarassed watching this with some people but it almost seems necessary for complete over-the-topness and the anime really wouldn't work as well without it. The art is great and has some old school vibes and it looks super cool. The music is epic and cool. Demon Slayer is feeling more like a standard shonen over the past couple arcs. It's got long battles with lots of talking and the arcs have been pretty much stand alone with not a ton of forward momentum in the overarching story. We have a new hashira they are with and a new setting in the red light district. For a while it seems like we might get some comedy with the boys going incognito as geishas but some demons soon come on the scene and we get a ton of action again. You know I've seen a lot of anime action but the battle over the last few episodes is pretty ridiculous. And the anime retains a dark and sometimes twisted edge while at the same time being very watchable and even cozy. There are many cool reveals of surprising twists involving the aliens origin, their society and culture (or lack of culture), etc. Next is a romance, really a love triangle, drama between the main characters. It's a little cheesy but somehow also very engaging. It also grounds the mecha sci fi story in a way that elevates both aspects. Finally there's some catchy old j-pop. I like the handdrawn animation but it varies in quality throughout- the machinery and battles are particularly nicely done. Remarkably consistent throughout it's 36 episodes. I could see watching this as a kid and it being a favorite- the cat kingdom and the adventures they have are pretty cool. The anime is really short at 75 minutes. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. It certainly doesn't drag or overstay its welcome. On the other hand, the world could have been fleshed out a little more and some more adventures could have been had. Pretty good, but not top tier Ghibli.

Very old short animation from the early sixties. It's just the same series of quick animations of sketches of humans in cages making animal sounds. No Game No Life
I don't care much for the overall concept of unbeatable game players just because they will never have perfect knowledge (and you can't know what it is that don't know) and not everything is deterministic and even deterministic things are often unpredictable. And for similar reasons I don't like the idea of politics or running a country or conquering the world being thought of as a sort of winnable game. If these ideas were treated with seriousness I think they would annoy me quite a bit. But it's so goofy that they didn't bother me all that much. The setting is odd- sort of like being in a computer strategy game in a fantasy world but it's actually really another world where everything is decided by games (betting on games). The art style is ok but very heavy on pinks and purples and sort of washed out. The two main characters are slightly annoying. It's very solidly ecchi. It takes a little while to get going. But the anime is very fun, and funny, espeically starting around the introduction of Jibril halfway through. Both Jibril and Steph are especially amusing. Overall a bit of a mixed bag but I had enough fun that I'd definitely be on board for another season.

No Game No Life: Zero
The movie is a prequel that takes place in the distant past of the world from the series. The characters are different from the ones in the series, they are in a complete different time after all, but they are also very similar- they could be reincarnated versions of each other. The movie is stand-alone but it's mostly going to be of interest for people who watched the series- they both provide a lot of context for each other. It doesn't have nearly as much ecchi or comedy. It still works but I wish it was a little funnier- that was a big part of the series. On the plus side, this version of our two protags is a little less annoying. Also of note is that this isn't isekai- no one is transported from our world to this world. Instead you just have this stand alone fantasy world and a story that takes place in it. And that gives it a sort of old-school anime feel.

There are a couple aspects to this. First it's a light romance between a merchant and a supernatural wolf girl demigod. Second it's an odd drama about the nitty gritty dealings of the merchant. The premise is not all that disimilar to SAO- a guy is stuck in an MMO-RPG. Actually, I'm not sure if he's stuck- if he's stuck then he doesn't have any sort of angst over his situation. And that's a big difference- the outside world isn't mentioned, but there are moments each episode that remind you it's in a game. Our main character was powerful in a game that is being shut down. He's there when the servers are supposed to turn off but instead of the world disappearing he's transported to a different game world along with the NPC's in his group who all start to behave more autonomously. The animation style is a little retro and looks cool. The characters and the reltationships between them are becoming fun and are developing nicely. Our main character is overpowered but has challenges managing the other characters around them. Overall its a good time, I'm on board for the next season. It's sort of a futuristic utopia where everyone lives in peace but this is made possible through strict monitoriing of people's psychological state by a central system. Latent criminals are locked up or executed before they can commit crimes. Anyway, it's very good. The characters are interesting and well developed. It's got a good villain. It brushes up against some interesting philosophical stuff in an non-stupid way. It makes you think occasionally. It's got some twists and turns. Entertaining throughout. It looks good. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
This is an isekai through and through. Our main protag, Subaru, gets sucked into another world and takes it pretty much in stride. How or why he is in this other world isn't explored at all. The anime plays out sort of like a video game, when Subaru dies he restarts from some point, he even refers to them as save points once. So it has a sort of Groundhog Day vibe which is cool, especially at first. But as he advances past various "save points" the video game comparison becomes more accurate. The anime looks good and the characters are pretty good too. I like the bad guys, the evil cult leader is completely unhinged and cool. There are some good battles and action although they aren't the focus to of the anime. The world building is cool and it feels like there's a lot here to explore but by the end it seems like quite a bit is left unexplored. And that's due to the anime's main problem which is that plot is a bit slow, especially in parts. It happens because Subaru has to repeat the same story multiple times to make it to the next "save point." Plot elements explored early, the first villain for example, are never followed up on. This has a lot going for it and I'd be in for another season. On the other hand, it did drag for me at times and didn't fully deliver on the promise it had early on.

I don't think the character is all that great- he seems strangly childish (or maybe a little effeminate?) perhaps because it is meant for kids. But at the same time he's a badass with a very dark past. Anyway, the series moves along nicely and is pretty cool. I dig the 90's, occasionally over-the-top samurai thing this has going on. On the downside, it's a little uneven and drags occasionally through it's long run. The three characters are great- all very different and it makes for an interesting set of companions. Going in I knew this as a sort of sequel to Cowboy Bebop and as a hip hop samurai thing. There are some similarities to Bebop in the overall vibe. The hip hop culture mixed with a samurai period anime sounds bad. But it's not nearly as obtrusive and corny as it sounds. Instead, when it incorporates something like and episode about graffiti, for example, it just comes off as light hearted and a little comical. I like the stand alone, single episode arcs. It's just really consistently good- engaging and fun. And it manages this even though it's constantly doing different things. There are also little moments here and there that are just lit as f***. The story has a classic feel- movies about plotting and executing an escape are pretty common after all. It get's pretty dark and twisted in that great anime way at the end of the first episode and the backdrop remains dark and twisted but it's rarely in your face and the children's world, while they're there is pretty and idyllic. It's a good juxtoposition. The anime does a great job stringing you along revealing bits and pieces about the world at a steady but slow pace. There's still lots I want to find out and I'm looking forward to more.

Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho
This is a top tier long shonen. It has top notch old school animation and action. The series seems to never go through a slow or boring patch through its entire 112 episodes which is quite a feat. I dig the characters. There's really nothing to dislike about this and there's lots of stuff I love.

Zankyou no Terror
Very nicely animated. There's a bit of mystery as to just what is going to happen, what the characters' motivations are, etc. It's interesting enough to keep watching to find out and the end is satisfying enough. Still, it's a bit slow and feels like maybe the plot of a movie rather than a series, even though the sereis is pretty short at 11 episodes.

Gintama
This is nealy a pure comedy- there's other little plots but they're just carriers for zany comic antics. I prefer my comedies wacky like this. It's very talky, fast paced, and scatterbrained which could all be a little tiring but Gintama manages to be easily watchable and enjoyable.

Akame ga Kill!
The top recommendation for this show is Seven Deadly Sins, and that is the show that came to mind while watching this. Both are shonens with fantasy settings. I don't love Seven Deadly Sins but it's funny and over the top and ecchi and so it's kind of fun. This feels like a generic shonen with some blood. Nothing really stands out. None of the characters really stand out. The action isn't that great. I don't think its terrible- it's definitely watchable. But after an okay beginning it starts to get a little more scattered, introducing a bunch of new characters quickly and the plot starts to feel a little random.

Guilty Crown
The rebellion premise involving an angsty teenage boy with some super powers seems a little tiresome. But this does a pretty decent job of developing its characters and world and there are some really cool moments here and there. On the downside, it feels like it's lacking a clear arc. You don't have much of an idea where it's going. It gets really wild near the middle of the series and actually feels like the logical ending of a first season. Overall, it's not terrible but it's also not very good.

Mirai Nikki (TV)
This has a neat concept. People are keeping diaries on flip phones, which seems rather strange- I've never heard of anyone doing this. Then there's a god who gets a bunch of them and makes their diaries show the future. They are then supposed to kill each other an the last one standing becomes a god. The concept is odd because the future is fluid and doesn't take into account that you are using the diary to avoid a bad fate. So while the concept is neat it doesn't quite work. Having a future telling device is cool but if the future is constantly changing that that makes the whole concept a lot less interesting. (The diary tells you what would happen if you didn't have any foreknowledge. But you do. So then what the diary says doesn't actually happen because you adapt your actions. It's strange.) Now, I'm not a stickler for realism. An anime can set up crazy worlds with crazy rules- it doesn't have to be realistic. But the characters actions, motivations, etc need to work within whatever crazy world it is set up- there needs to be some sort of coherance and the characters need to seem human (act like humans, have human motivations). And the characters in this show are just weird and don't make sense too much of the time. Overall, it is a bit of a trainwreck, and it is entertaining for a while, but it's not very good.

Naruto
The first five episodes or so are entertaining. Then it gets into its first major arc (in the mist with the bridge builder) and it immediately bogs down into long drawn out battles that take multiple episodes and that just aren't very interesting. And it doesn't help that the first arc is all in this mist- it's visually uninteresting. It's actualy pretty good when it's light hearted and funny with Naruto and his friends getting into trouble. I like these long shonen battle anime quite a bit but the caveat is that they can't be too drawn out and need to have some interesting stuff happening each episode- Hunter x Hunter is a good example. And unfortunately, many examples of the genre, like Naruto, are too drawn out and too often become boring which makes it tough to get through such a long series. With that said, I made it through quite a bit of this, it's pleasant enough, it's just a really average shonen.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season
The first season was good. It's an isekai and the fantasy world seems like it's got some depth and potential. The groundhog day thing when he dies and resets at a save point is neat. There's some horror and surprises. The bad guys are interesting- crazy cultists, giant monsters. There's some intense and well done action. The production values are good. It's got some sort of harem thing going. The characters are fine. But the faults were also starting to show in the first season. It's problems really are a lack of focus and a lack of fun. Halfway through the first part of the second season and the plot is just gone. There's a bunch of stuff going on but none of it is interesting or seems like it's going anywhere. It's scatterbrained. Are we supposed to be concerned about the ruler selection? Where's the witch's cult? They're dicking around in some sanctuary with some trial bs. There's lots and lots of talking but there's no arc or forward momentum to the story. Maybe this meandering would be bearable if there was some comedy or fun. But alas, the anime is stone cold serious. It's too bad because the show had promise the first season is ok. But it's steadily gotten worse and at this point it's pretty hard to watch. Stunningly overrated.

Sword Art Online II
I liked the first season, especially the first half of the first season well enough for what it was. It's not that good but it's just a sort of junk food or guilty pleasure anime. In general the quality of SAO seems to get worse and worse. There's a big decline between the first and second half of the first season. This is maybe on par with the second half of the first season but it's also really slow moving. No Asuna. Kiroto with a sort-of-female avatar. And the search for Death Gun just doesn't feel that interesting or high stakes. And strangely it just seems slow.
