Geu Yeoreum Movie

This film is peak yuri. It might just be the most "realistic" yuri out there right now. We need better subtitles though.

"Geu Yeoreum" transcends the confines of its genre, offering a universal tale of love and self-discovery. While it beautifully navigates the complexities of a yuri relationship, it also touches on themes of identity, acceptance, and the transformative power of genuine connection.

The pacing of the film is well-balanced, allowing moments of quiet reflection to breathe and build the emotional landscape. Each scene serves a purpose, contributing to the overall narrative without unnecessary detours. It felt very realistic and authentic.

Its exquisite cinematography, stellar ... performances, and emotionally resonant storytelling combine to create a film that leaves a lasting impression. "Geu Yeoreum" is a cinematic triumph that deserves a place among the finest in its genre. We need more films like this.

This was an okay yuri movie, overall.

The background art was very pretty, and the cinematography was handled really well. Little moments like where Yi Gyeong draws using the moisture on the window when it is raining, or when she plays with the light reflection from her watch, add a surprising amount to the experience. The music was also pleasant, it added to the scenes without being overpowering.

So what didn't I like so much?

As the other reviews have mentioned, this movie portrays a very realistic relationship, but that's all. Personally, I think realism is a very overrated aspect when it comes to storytelling. Realism ... isn't bad, but there has to be a lot more to a work to keep me interested than just realism; I don't care for realism for its own sake. A good romance story should have a compelling romance and memorable characters, this doesn't really have either. It's much more of a drama than a romance. [Spoilers after this point] The characters get together very quickly at the beginning with very little romantic development, and the rest of the movie is spent with them having relationship troubles. The drama wasn't half-bad, and I'm not inherently against a "falling out of love" story either, but it didn't give me much reason to care about their romance in the first place (besides yuri). The reasons for Yi Gyeong and Suyi breaking up were also very vague and confusing to me. At first I thought it may be because Yi Gyeong was maybe having feelings for that one nurse woman at her school, but they stopped meeting together after Yi Gyeong kept talking about her girlfriend, it didn't really seem like their relationship was going anywhere. So was their reason for breaking up just some sort of vague dissatisfaction? The movie was unclear about this, and they seemed very emotionally distraught about breaking up with each other; I find it hard to believe they didn't still like each other. To me, it felt like the creators just wanted to have a sad ending, but they didn't do enough to properly justify it.

This wasn't terrible overall, and if a realistic yuri-drama sounds like it may interest you, then it is probably worth giving a shot. I just think it was decent as a drama, but not very good as a romance.

It's realistic in a way that being a dumbass who can't communicate with your partner and choose to emotionally cheat on them instead is "realistic", sure. The movie had potential though it was a bit slow sometimes. Definitely inspired by The Silent Voice in how it's storyboarded but it was lacking at some parts. The writing was extremely weak, it was such an overblown misunderstanding/miscommunication. It's hard to believe that two long term friends, lovers, won't try to reach out to the other party if they're uncomfortable with something. The main character was also written awfully. She was extremely cowardly till the end. Her girlfriend ... was the opposite, she was cowardly at first but decided to become brave, strong and did her best to be independent as soon as possible so she could support the MC. MC on the other hand felt nothing but shame and frustration with her girlfriend and refused to communicate properly with her, she didn't even try to understand that her girlfriend was doing everything she can to be with her, and instead blamed her for her (MC) having interests in other people. She still doubted her gf's feelings for her even after her gf hurriedly carried her to the hospital because of her high fever. And the movie shows her seeming happy and content by the end? As if she deserved to move on?

What the hell is this bs writing? Again, yeah it's realistic, if you wanted to depict an awful and cowardly mc. There's very few yuri movies/films out there, especially when it comes to animation, but they wasted the potential this movie had with that awful writing. It could have been something due to the effort they put into the post production but the awful writing and development of the main character just gives a bad taste to the entire thing.
