its quite similar because it based on pc games. but its slightly better.  

Both have a theme on technologies about the main plot is an online game being being disruptive in both online and the real world with perspective switching through and forth. Where the game in question experience many malfunctioning and strange events 

both are based on VRMMORPG where in-game death have real life repercussions  

Technology plays a central role in both series, along with them having a darker atmosphere and the inclusion of social issues. Bonus: Ignoring the hair color, Pico and Lain have similar-ish hairstyles. 

Although .hack//Sign it's more of a slow slice of life and coming of age series with some mystery, while Good Night World is a fast adventure that turns into a psychological sci-fi thriller mid way, in half the length of the other, they share: -Broken people trying to connect with others through a videogame, something that they couldn’t do in the real world with their real families, more so in Good Night World. -Similar head sets, though smaller and more advanced in Good Night World. -An advanced AI going crazy and affecting the real world and people, more so in Good Night World. -A dead girl resurrected in a way, in the form of an AI, and being hidden in a game as one of its main objectives and reasons for its existence. -A girl falling in love with the protagonist and trying to reconnect him with reality. -Anti-escapism messages read more
