In a season so clearly divided between great anime and complete garbage, The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls: U149 stands out as the definition of mid.

An up-and-coming producer takes on the challenge of turning literal children into popular idols, and when I say literal children, the eldest of the group of nine is twelve. This anime does feel like a bit of a yikes-burger, especially when one of the girls comments on wanting to look "sexy" during a photoshoot, but the show leans towards a wholesome vibe even if it feels a bit forced. I've read comments online by fans suggesting that ... this is a dark look into the idol industry and the industry's treatment of young idols like "Oshi no Ko", but after watching four episodes I'd say that's a stretch. Sure those elements are there if you want to look for them, but this is a moé-idol show through and through, and comparing this to "Oshi no Ko" is foolish.

The 'too many characters' syndrome is strong in this idol anime. We're introduced to ten main characters in episode one, all competing for screen time and character development that will probably never happen for at least half the cast. Four episodes later and I can barely remember three of them not including manger-kun. The charmingly bright and colourful animation is the anime's strongest point.

Ultimately there's nothing wrong with The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls: U149. If you're watching it and enjoying it that's perfectly fine. However, despite its questionably young cast, it doesn't do or say anything that you haven't already seen in other better shows about idols. That's especially true if you're comparing this to "Oshi no Ko".
