This is the first Inu Yasha movie, taking place after the hero has learned the counterattack technique. The scenario takes advantage of the best hooks of the show, such as the romance amongst the heroes and the tragedy of their pasts. It is also offers an interesting “what if” scenario where Inu Yasha is sealed on the tree again and Kagome is trapped on the present. Effectively it is a summary of whatever has happened so far, as well as a showdown of all that befalling on them at the same time. Skippable. This story really has nothing to do with the main plot. Naraku's name doesn't even appear once. Nothing important happens in this movie.
With that out of the way, this movie came off to me as a bland side story that went on too long. The villain is one dimensional, and his defeat was basically a love-conquers-all trope, but with some romantic drama. The pacing is slow with a rushed conclusion. It could have used the time to explore the villain a bit more, and make him more than an old, power hungry guy with a vendetta. Instead we got a sesshoumaru cameo. He got ... |
