Jarinko Chie (TV)

In both these titles, there is a girl and a grown man as her parent. In their relationship, there is a relatively responsible part (Chie in Jarinko Chie, Nitta in Hinamatsuri), and a "childish" part. The male lead is either a vase obsessed gangster (Nitta in Hinamatsuri), or a guy who lives for gambling and brawling, beating up gangsters on the way and collecting their sunglasses as trophies (Tetsu in Jarinko Chie). Mains and various side characters have their own stories, which are more or less connected. The characters are of various ages and social statuses. Mains and side characters do not always have the best relation with law, order and etiquette. Furthermore, the adults do not always lead by good example (for example by taking kids to a horse track), and especially Tetsu is more of a bad example. This is exactly what makes these characters so likeable. I found these very entertaining comedies, which were even funny when I watched the episodes repeatedly. This is quite an exception, since I usually find comedies worse when I watch them a second time. read more 

The male lead lead is strong, lazy and irresponsible. Quite refreshing to watch if you are tired of watching these upstanding guys of other titles always doing their best...  

The Movie tells events from Chie's life in a more or less linear way. The events of the movie are covered in episodes 1 to 10 of the TV series, but the TV series adds slices of life of other characters too. This is more expanded upon in the later episodes: The action takes place in various intermittant strings focusing on various characters. These are mainly Chie and Tetsu, but also other persons like Hirame, Mitsuru, Yoshie, Tobita, Masaru and others get their own plot strings. These plot strings may be paused, their "arcs" may not start and end at the same time, and there are usually various strings in different stages of progress at the end of each episode. It is the first title in the MAL database I know that uses this narration technique (despite being quite common in real live TV). So I would recommend the movie as what may be called "linear" slice of life focusing on Chie, and the TV series as "soap opera" slice of life telling the story of an Osaka neighbourhood over the seasons.
