Both anime involve the Shinsengumi and a main character who's been through a lot when he was young (Ryunosuke and Tetsunosuke). The main characters start out as wimps but slowly get more mature as they spend more time with the Shinsengumi. Oh, and both shows have a maiko girl who's special to the main character.

Both are great historical anime based around approximately the same time period of Japan's history, Meiji/Bakumatsu. Both series feature shinsengumi; in Hakuouki most of the main cast are shinsengumi members and in Rurouni Kenshin shinsengumi are one of Kenshin's enemies of the past.

Same time period, during the final years of the shogunate (bakumatsu). Heavily historical.
