Nurarihyon no Mago: Sennen Makyou

This is my first time writing a review here in MAL, so please don't expect that much.

Nurarihyon no Mago was my one of my grade school anime, so it held a place in my heart. But of course, as I got older, I went to watch it again in high school to see if it was any good.


While I loved season 1 a lot when I was younger, the same cannot be said when I got older. S1 became boring because of one vital reason -- the pacing. If I'm not wrong, I tried to read the manga. Then I found out that some ... of the episodes were like based on one chapter. Because of that, the anime was painfully slow. Then, I thought to myself, is this the same for Season 2? I hope not.

On to S2: Thank God, the pacing was not horrible at all. In fact, it was a huge improvement in the anime part. Season 2 was also visually appealing. Then, we get to know some of the history of the Nura Clan, which is definitely one of the best part of this series.

TLDR: Loved the characters, sounds, art the theme. Plot wasn't too bad, CONTINUITY WAS ABSOLUTE TRASH. What ever happened between season 1 and 2 is apparently overlooked. I honestly don't understand why the ratings are higher in this series than the first.

The text will talk about Season 1 and 2 and will be posted on both show pages. Oh I don't care to look up many names. They were hard to remember minus a couple characters I loved.
Season 1 was great. I would recommend watching that show. We have a kid (Rikuo) who is struggling with the fact he ... is about to become an amazing demon clan lord but at first doesn't want to. He simply wants to be human but realizes he has to protect the humans he loves. Demons however, are supposed to terrorize over humans so hanging out with one is taboo. This sets a good story until you realize that we only really care about one human who looks like she is a love interest to our main character. She ends up falling for his demon form after he saves her a couple times. He even brings her to a popular hangout of demons like they're on a date which is apparently unheard of except both his grandfather and father the previous rulers did the same thing.

We have one other human who is a demon hunter who seems cool but we'll get to her later. All four of the other humans are annoying or have no character development the whole 2 seasons. Don't believe me? The annoying one, the passive quiet one, and 2 girls who are along for the ride. They simply move the plot along with one idiot making group activities to get themselves into trouble.

You should be able to see what I'm getting at. Continuity in the first half aren't too bad. Our main character fights demons by night, hides his identity during the day to be a regular human. The show shows promise in the 2nd half. Now our demon lord has to fight someone who wants to become an even stronger demon lord to terrorize humans, while our MC is also trying to get a demon hunter (another human friend) on his side. Good guy wins.. (duh there's a 2nd season), we got to see him go from greenie to professional BADA$$, we even have a bit of a love triangle going. Our MC, a human and his long time demon friend Tsurara. I loved her. shes co cute, strong and fun. Great. Lets see where we go from here...

Season 2... ugh...
I will say our MC is developed much better but in a very sloppy way. We even see a few minor arcs but the story leaves it super vague. Are these all very close friends, are they lovers, family, or what is going on? If our MC isn't here, it seems like none of these characters would actually hang out with each other.
From the first episode I was confused. We got to see how a pre- 1st season flash back from one of the humans. In this event, our demon lord actually saved all his friends when they were about 6 or 8. Except it didn't quite play out the way it was portrayed in the first season. Perhaps the human remembered it differently but it was never talked about. Plus we have humans at the scene who were not in the flash back and didn't know our main character until the first season. Bad flow

In the next several episodes we do flash backs of how our demon lords grandfather became a warrior. OKAY? So he meets his grandmother who is a princess and he falls in love with her... except it sure doesn't look like love when the grandfather (who is now an old man in our timeline) is about to R@p3 this princess but she stops him and then they go on a date? WHAT!!!

OK moving forward we now have a backstory on how grandpa fought a evil lady and it looks like our demon lord will have to fight the same person again.
Oh but our demon lord is not strong enough so he needs to go train while everyone else is getting wrecked.

This adds to the confusion. Our demon lord in the first season was stoic, heroic, really cool, could fight anything if it was for the right reasons. 2nd season and all he can do is transform and he talks a lot more while being the annoying kid we had in the first part of the first season. Its not clearly explained how he went from OP to noobie until 2 episodes later. Oh, hes fighting people who know how to do exactly what he can do.. but ok we're off.

Half of Kyoto is being destroyed by the witch lady our grandfather killed. Our MC is super strong and can take on anything.. until he comes face to face with a near God. Time to go train even more, but I'm going to train with one of my clan members who I beat in combat in the first season. How does he so much stronger than our MC yet our MC pretty decidedly beat him in the first half of the first season? WTF. Oh and while we're in Kyoto 10 episodes in 10 our human friends decide to show up. Then its too dangerous so they're locked away for them to be safe. Only time we see our human friends again is the one time they're attacked. Now they aren't seen again until the end.. WTF. Could you expand on that love triangle a little? I the human love interest is really cute. You had an amazing opportunity to develop her and you squandered it. What is worse is once our MC is ready and comes back, its not the right time to talk about the other love interest because we're at war.

The last 8 episodes really drug on with this show. You pretty much knew what was going to happen until the last 2 episodes when they decided to throw in some unnecessary plot twists. I guess so they could open more lines for us to go and explore in a Season 3 that never came. I'm kind of glad. Despite the last 3 episodes having some dumb plot twists, the writer created a superman character who cant be killed by anything except the power of friendship, except that doesn't quite work either. Great. Season 3, which didn't come.. (apparently the manga is written?)... is how we will take on literal gods.

Finally holy shit, how much punishment can these demons take. Some how they can survive getting stabbed through the chest multiple times??

I can understand the first season being slow but I don't mind, we're building characters and going from nothing to amazing. 2nd season, we have a sloppy plot, some development but its all telling story, no tying of characters. It should not be rated as high as it is.
I hope this helps someone. Sorry for the long story.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ANIME! I've read some review that they didn't like the 1st season, but heck, I enjoyed it 😜

I love the graphics, I love the opening and ending scene, love the music too ♥️ I just love everything eh? But why 9 stars for the 2nd season? Well, the ending was just... I mean, it wasn't concluded even after all the hype for that "last" battle. But even so, it was still a very good for me. I love yokai and supernatural in my anime and it was laid out pretty well here.

I think can I describe the 1st season as "chill" ... and the 2nd season "action". It doesn't also helps that these nurarihyon dudes are so hot even with that kind of hairstyle wahahahahaha

And let's talk about that scene will ya? Hahaha. Grandpa nurarihyon sure is so smooth eh? I wish we could have seen more of this pair though 🥰
