One Piece (Manga) add
Preliminary (1/? chp)
It’s hard to recommend one piece to the everyday he/she/them. I was only able to overcome the moby dick 1000+ chapters because of COVID and a ton of time at home. However If I had a hyperbolic time chamber I would purchase every volume and invite every person on earth to come and get locked inside so they can read Oda sensei’s masterpiece. All consensual of course. I guarantee 99% of people that exited the chamber would be happier and we would solve world peace and shit. 1000+ chapters turn the straw hats into your family. Characters that when the tale inevitably ends, you’ll feel ...

Slam Dunk (Manga) add
Just finished reading this at 12am in Australia, said I’d read volume 29 before bed and ended up strapped into the roller coaster ride. I have not delved too much into sports manga or anime beyond haikyuu (which I have yet to finish) prior to reading slam dunk. I initially felt like the enjoyment I got from the sports genre was exploring a sport I am unfamiliar with, volleyball, and that the bar had been set quite high. I am a big nba fan. I support the Minnesota Timberwolves. They are shit and make my life miserable on a reoccurring basis. Anthony Edwards nice with ...

Initial post timeskip feels are great. Holding off Sasuke initially builds intrigue. We are introduced to the akatsuki, and despite all the gang levelling up in the timeskip, know that your usual karate ain’t gonna cut it. Each akatsuki has unique skillsets and relations with each other that are fun to unpack. Kisame and Itachi have respect, Deidara and Sadie I have philosophical differences about the nature of art, Tobi is just around being a pest, and Kakazu can’t kill Hidan. The first half is filled with great layoffs. Gaara becoming big boss, Sakura actually getting shit done, Shikamaru and the Asama stuff etc. And ...

Naruto (Anime) add
Be warned this a review based heavily on nostalgia. As I’m sure this was the case for many individuals this what, perhaps shamefully, a gateway to anime/manga at large (beyond dragon ball z which was on cheese tv so it doesn’t count). To this day I still think back fondly on the adventures of Naruto and his pals. Zabuza is a great introductory villain. The chunin exams are rightfully heralded as one of the best arcs in anime. We are introduced to a variety of interesting new characters beyond team seven 7, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Then into Orochimaru who shamefully gets ...

The first half of this show was stellar. Araki creates an amazing villain that stalks on a small town and creates tension leading into the second half. But then it all goes to nonsense. The weird cat plant thing is jojo creativity at its worst. An idea that takes you out of it. Similar to to the old paper plane codger. As well as the alien fellow up the telegraph pole. Once again our jojo is one of the least interesting parts of the story, outdone by both Rohan and Kira. I find this intriguing as in his how to write manga book (which is ...

Spy x Family (Anime) add
Anya is the cure for the world’s sadness. Whilst the story never goes too deep, nor is the nondescript war taking place ever fleshed out, I feel the story operates more like a slice of life. The joy comes from seeing Yor, Loid, Bond and Anya bounce off each other. There is something heartwarming about seeing these initially isolated characters come together to form a makeshift, dysfunctional family. The mission format keeps the show fresh and allows the show to switch between action and comedy. The side characters are all fun and never steal the Thunder from our main act. Superb voice acting. The show ...

Mixed Feelings
Spoiler
This will read like all my other jojo reviews. Style over substance. Giorno is an empty husk of a character. A haircut on a pink suit whom we gain no insight or connection to over the course of 40ish episodes. His character should have been merged with Bruno who has more weight and investment in the story taking place. Bruno’s gang receive similar treatment. Stylish outfits and flair but contributing very little. Apart from Guido. Guido is a pimp. The main bad shows up late and with a meh motivation. Wraps it up with dues ex machine type stuff and leaves you unsatisfied. Now for ...

Punish to get through. Which is understandable as it Araki’s first foray into the Jojo world. Dio and Jojo is a fun dynamic but the story and art show a writer finding his niche. Lays the groundwork for the intertwined jojo parts but you can honestly skip it and move to part 2 or 3. It still captures some elements of the wackiness that fans know and love but none of the finesse. Memes are the only reason this part is still relevant. Ultimately feels disconnected from later tales (beyond the inclusion of stands). A few more words here to meet the word count but ...

Doubt (Manga) add
Doubt falls victim to a curse that plagues so many modern horror franchises - iconic imagery (the bunny mask) with an undercooked narrative and characters. Characters whose names and personalities you won't remember spend the majority of this story worrying about key cards, looking at surveillance cameras, and going into rooms. Riveting stuff. Not enough is done to foster paranoia between the participants in the bunny game and motivations for muder are weak. Swerve at the end is shit and unfulfilling. Give this one a miss, bland and uninspired. Finished only as it is short and hoped there would be some redemption come the end ...

Made in Abyss (Anime) add
One of the best combinations of concept + execution in the medium. There is something primitive about the abyss and the mystery surrounding its depths that hooks into the human subconscious I feel, in a manner similar to the deep space or the ocean. As Riko and Reg descend, we get to see wonders but also the horrors and dangers of this unknown world. Riko is a stereotypical overly enthusiastic protagonist, who has been shaped by the abyss and its connection to her Mother. Reg is an adorable little robot fucker, loyal and with a touch of mystery. Nanachi's backstory is amongst the most tragic ...
