One thing we need to be clear, Reiner is at fault for all this, now you may not realise is that, this isn't the first time where Reiner action didn't make sense.
For instanceback inepisode 4, why would Reiner risk his life and mission when he save connie from that titan and was going to jump from the tower? He not only risk his life, but also his secret.
There will be a explanation on Reiner action in the upcoming episodes, but for now lets just say Reiner isn't mentally in the right mind right now.
So I would say keep watching and Reiner actions will eventually make sense, its all intentional.
I must say, SAO gets better and better at getting worse :D
