then I prayed to Haruhi before realizing bitch doesn't even know she's a god.

it was then that I realized all these are anime characters anyway, so please help me random internet person dude. I need your help to reach my hopes and dreams which include:

sleeping in bed

not getting attacked by killer bees

food

a copy of mega man 4 for the NES that has been signed by the guy who invented door bells

and matching socks that don't have holes on them

Japan has waged countless wars within its territories and beyond her shores for thousands of years now, and in anime we can see some of the perspectives, interpretations and depictions the Japanese people have developed with regards to this topic.

In this stack list I have gathered what I consider to be the essential anime with the theme of war, whether they show it from the perspective of the soldiers who fight them or from the experience of the bystander civilians who have to endure its effects on society and the environment. War is a theme that comes up, even tangentially, in most of everything, so I can't really make a list of every good anime that has some reference to war in it, so here I tried to put shows that either have a direct focus on war as a core theme, or shows whose main focus isn't war and only have war related elements in certain limited sections, but still do provide an interesting and valuable perspective on it when the theme of war eventually comes up.

I don't necessarily agree with all of these shows' views on war (I actively disagree with some), nor do I believe every show here is good. I just think that all of these could offer interesting insight on the different perspectives about war that come up in Japanese animation. You decide which view of war you agree with the most or find most emotionally genuine and politically nuanced.

Do you want to spend time with pleasure and learn some information about pioneers, chinese generals, strategists, writers or maybe aircraft designers?

Here is the list of worth watching anime, where the main characters are real-life historical figures or based on them. During the view I reccomend to use wiki or other internet sources to learn even more about these people and the historical events they were involved in.

Choosen titles are as close to realism as possible and give accurate information about the historical periods/events, achievements of historical figures, names. Thus Fate series are excluded.

These anime have strong & dark depictions of suffering, mental illness, trauma violence, sex and various sociopolitical and economic problems in a grounded way and without sugarcoating it, although in fiction it is often impossible to completely avoid the distorting lense of epicness or melodrama when portraying reality.

When I say that these shows portray reality, I don't mean to say that they are necessarily based in material reality, as some are sci-fi or fantasy. What I mean, is that these shows portray the bleak and harrowing aspects of human condition without pulling any punches, and without romanticizing it (to some extent).

These shows often have a positive and hopeful overall message and/or ending sometimes, so I wouldn't call this a list of "depressing" shows. However, they have in common that they revolve around brutal and mature depictions of psychological, physical and spiritual pain of individuals and society, while also having a haunting and opressive feel to them.

This is a trope that is particular to anime/manga that I find pretty cool:

"Morally Ambiguous Light Haired Guy With An Ambition" in a bromance/rivalry with the "Stoic or Shy Brunette Guy With a Hidden Genius" (or girls, in the case of Angel Cop).

AKA how the Japanese sees the "European/American foreigner with a fierce personality" vs how they see themselves.

Or just the archetypal "Griffith" type of leading character but without the bromance necessarily, such as Canut or Giorno.

These anime are the standouts. They opt not for the worst of tropes but instead utilize classic conventions of storytelling to portray a gritty story. When I say gritty, I mean that the story grounds itself in either our or its own sense of reality. Eye-rollingly convenient power reveals are hard to come by here. Among them, intrusive fanservice is also quite uncommon. These are stories that take their plot, characters, and world seriously.

This stack is primarily made to encapsulate a specific vibe I often seek in anime but is difficult to describe. Let me know if there's something you think belongs on this list.
