They are both by the same author first of all. They include cameo's of characters that were Yankee-kun to Megane-chan. You get the same feel from both series; comedy and that slice-of-life. They are both also really enjoyable. Thank you.

Both are romances between a yankee guy and a smart girl (or at least smart looking). Both deal with school life and in particular with stundent council.

Both Yamada-kun and Yankee-kun has very similar artwork in terms of its settings and character design because of the author. Additionally, they both take place in a school life environment.
The main male protagonist from both series are hotheaded and often rushes into situations without thinking. However, they do get along well with their classmates and cares about his friends. At the same time, they get into conflicts with other students throughout the series with various degrees of drama.
There is romance present in both series as well. However,one noticeable factor present in Yamada-kun is the addition of supernatural elements added in.

Same creator , Same stuff.
Yankee-kun is more shounen type and has delinquents in setting while Yamada-kun has supernatural elements and interesting plotline but I assure you that both have romance and in both manga MC guy starts off as loners.
Both manga are from the same author with a Highschool setting and very similar protagonists.
The artstyle is also identical and both start off with a chance encounter with a girl.

These mangas are so similar it blows my mind to this day (and I read them a few years ago), there was all the similraities with the story set up as well as the main protagonists. So much so that we even got a crossover chapter between the two which was amazing!!! As soon as you finish one of the two start the other, you won't regret it!
