Both series are Type-Moon related franchise so expect some of the same characters to pop up here and there. But more importantly, both series are VERY funny for their humor. In fact, both series are portrayed as parodies with no direct/serious plot to the whole.
There is a lot of funny dialogues as well as comedy going on. There is also the school life background where even more comedy ensures.
Verdict: watch for the humor and entertainment rather than taking either series seriously.

Carnival Phantasm and Fate/kaleid are part of the Fate franchise, but on a alternate story. Unlike it's parent franchise, they both have a lighthearted, comedy atmosphere, where characters interact with funny dialogues and segments. You will see most of the returning characters, who are going to be a either a running gag, or in a cute appearance.
Carnival Phantasm is somewhat a variety genre where they show gags and comedy segments, but no story. Fate/kalied follows Illya who is a normal school girl until she was contracted as a magical girl.
