Well, Christmas has become less and less exciting as I've gotten older and I'm probably older than you imagine. I woke up late and fell asleep early. I did enjoy a rewatch of Princess Principal during the holiday season though, and that managed to send me to sleep with a smile on my face (because of the elegant and lovable, nicely-spoken female characters) :)
SAO has always been enjoyable for me. I wouldn't say it was an indisputable artistic masterpiece, but it's fun and easy to get into and there's a cute heartfelt/tender burgeoning romance between Kirito and Asuna - which is refreshing because a distinct and developed romantic aspect is something that's missing from most of the top 10 most popular anime. As for NGNL, I hope we get to see more of it sometime in the future. A 2nd season would be the ultimate anime gift. And it would be great it was aired around Christmas. It's colorful and sparkly and has a magical/fantastical vibe, so it would really suit that time of year.
Overlord shares some similarities with Log Horizon (another series I REALLY like) - especially in its world building and with independently thinking autonomous NPCs, who seem to come alive and exhibit unique human-like personality traits. Lord Ainz is the 'overlord' and mastermind/grand architect at the center of it all, putting together the cunning and complex schemes and strategies for dominion over the fantasy gaming world they all inhabit, which has basically come alive and is now functioning independently from the game. His entourage made up of different varieties of magical/fantasy creatures/beings is amusing to watch, and there's some spice and naughtiness in there which you don't see in something like Log Horizon or SAO (or Shield Hero or Slime). There are probably more eccentric/peculiar moments and things to make you laugh than the other two, as well. It can almost be a bit of a guilty-pleasure/self-indulgent kind of fantasy series, but I would recommend you give it a try if you're ever in a mood for a sword and sorcery fantasy as it has the best writing and characters of any isekai I've seen up until now.
I saw the first Solo Leveling episode (out of curiosity) and it was OK as far as first episodes go. I recognized Sawano's musical style in the OST, which will add some weight and grandeur to the action and drama. I might wait for a few more episodes to build up (I watched the first one dubbed) but already I would say it has the potential to be alright/good as a fresh new action/adventure series. Let's see!
Fate/Zero is hard to go wrong with (much like Steins;Gate or FMAB) and it's very rare that you'll come across someone who strongly dislikes it for some reason. And it's seen as one of the darker-themed and grim/tragic popular series.
Yeah, Demon Slayer delivers with the artwork and animation. I was curious enough (because of the MAL rating and hype) to want to see it for myself, and see what all the fuss was about, even though I had the feeling the story and dialogue might not be mature or complex enough for me. I'd recommend sticking with it until the end of the first season before making the decision to continue any further, or not. Overall, I think it's OK. Just about worth making the effort for.
Ah, isekai's dominate every anime season now, and it's been like that from the time I first started MAL. I wonder when the trend will start to fade out, and what will emerge or rise to ascendancy to take its place. From memory, series like No Game No Life, Re:Zero, KonoSuba, Tanya the Evil, and Overlord, got the ball rolling (between 5 and 10 years ago), and then when Reincarnated as a Slime, Shield Hero, and Mushoku Tensei emerged (within the last 5 years), the movement really went into overdrive. I do actually like some the aforementioned but I think there's been an over-saturation and a case of quantity over quality. Like, I don't there has been anything recent to rival NGNL (series and movie) and the Overlord franchise.
And if I don't get to speak to you again before then...I Wish You A Happy Christmas!
Vinland Saga is certainly one of the best action series ever, I would say. It's quite comparable to AOT, but set 1000 years ago in the Viking historical era. Season 1 is by WIT, and then there's a time skip with season 2 which is produced by MAPPA. The time skip and studio change gives off AOT vibes and there's also a maturing of the story in the 2nd season as well, while the 1st season is more action orientated with the Vikings rampaging and pillaging.
As I recently said to someone else asking advice about the 'Fate' watch order - start with Fate/Zero season 1 and 2 first, and when you complete that get back to me. If you enjoyed it and want to continue further with the franchise, I'll give you instructions for the next one/your next mission ;)
Thanks for the lowdown on JJK. I've seen the first 3 episodes but have gotten stuck on episode 4 and can't get any further. It's like I've hit an impenetrable wall with it. I think I did well to give Demon Slayer (in someways comparable to JJK) a fair crack, and even though it's had it's pros and cons, I'm committed to seeing it through to the end now (especially as I have the feeling we've already passed the halfway point of the story) - although, that type of premise/setup is not what I'm looking for in an anime these days. I'm looking for something more mature and ideally more true to life and free of superpowers/magic powers.
I thought the final hour and a half long episode was really crazy (with those Titan clones coming out of giant monster Eren's rib-cage) and hectic (so much going on at once) and unpredictable (it's like no one was a guaranteed safe-bet to pull through). I thought Falco's flying Titan was cool and a real game-changer (it kinda ended up saving the day), and there were moments of strong emotions and pathos in the storytelling. There was also a certain sad and poignant beauty to the ending - especially with the Mikasa and Eren story. Imagine, she only got to kiss him for the first time after she'd decapitated him, to save the world. That's pretty dark.
It's nice to see you're still active here after creating this account 15 years ago!
I've been socially active on MAL for 5 years but first started watching anime 12 years ago. I was impressed with my first two purchases, Ghost in the Shell SAC series 1 and 2, so I began watching anime regularly from then on. I really hadn't a clue about the whole anime world before that point, but I've built up some knowledge and experience over the course of 12 years.
Did you ever get around to watching that Kabaneri sequel movie?
I'm sorry to hear that you had a hard year but I'm glad that you're still with us and still using MAL. Hopefully, there will be some amazing new anime for you to get into in the future which will reignite your enthusiasm. I can understand you having some breaks and downtime though because you've been using the site and watching anime for so long.
I'm glad to see you were active only a couple of days ago because you've been going for nearly 13 years now, which makes you one of the longest-time users I've ever encountered. Congratulations!
Gamers! dubbed is full of witty repartee and situational comedy built out of romantic misunderstandings. I saw a forum someone created saying that the dubbed version was better than the subbed in their opinion, and I can well understand that - it is really funny and endearing!
Out of the more popular and high rated shows I'd say Attack on Titan and No Game No Life dubbed are pretty much close to perfection, and something I'd recommend to any English speaking anime fan :D
