I saw the first episode or "step" to this show and couldn't understand why it was getting a lot of hype. Curious I stuck around and watched it till the end. I have to say for those twenty minutes my face expression went from blank to *GASP*.
Story: The story is plainly forbidden love. It's a more serious subject, that is evident in our world today. I'm glad that a few animators took the time to create something short and cute with that kind of topic.
Art: The art is just cute. I couldn't help but aww at Doki and Nabi many many many times.

Kare Kano is the first shoujo anime that I really liked (Excluding Sailor Moon). Kare Kano takes a spin on what could be a normal/ seen it/ shoujo and makes it into something that I was not expecting.
Story: As for the story it has it's cliche moments, but as a whole is very unique and pretty powerful for a shoujo. If you have seen my review for Deep Love Ayu no Monogatari, then you might see some similarities.
Deep Love Reina no Unmei is probably the saddest, and most tragic. It tells the story of a friend, lover, and mother whose name is Reina. The art is good, and there are not many characters, but not many characters are needed for this short manga. It's a quick read, but a hard one to get through.
