Pluto
add

Gunslinger Girl and Pluto are strikingly similar. Both follow mainly robots (or cyborgs, in GG's case, but they serve the same narrative purpose) and their examination of their humanity. Both feature a lot of international intrigue, spread across many countries. Both question the future of mankind and other usual sci-fi themes. And, finally, both are just as good as the other, alike in their good points (character writing and plotting) and bad ones (too bleak and with some lifeless scientific/political exposition).

Urusei Yatsura
add

xxxHOLiC and Urusei Yatsura both borrow heavily from Japanese mythology to create colorful casts of characters. These two stories are alike in their humor and energy, filled to the brim with gags, love, and genuine humanity. Tonally, Urusei Yatsura feels like the younger sibling of xxxHolic: where the latter is often eery and sophisticated, the former is spooky and brash; but you'll love them both just the same.

Loose Senki: Old Boy
add

Old Boy may not contain any sci-fi elements, but it shares many themes with Akira, not the least of which is the treatement of the masses by those most powerful in society. What's more, Minegishi's art is very reminiscent of Otomo's, not to mention the tones of both stories, aligned in their contemplation of humanity and violence.
