It is with a bittersweet feeling that I now right this review of Noragami. I’m so sad to see it end, as it was easily my favourite anime of the Winter 2013-14 season.
Noragami focuses on Iki Hiyori and her adventures with the Delivery god, Yato. After an accident Hiyori gains the ability to transform into a half-ayakashi (spirit/phantom), unfortunately, she has no power over this phenomenon, and as a result, often transforms at inconvenient times. Hiyori then makes the wish to Yato for him to turn her back into a full human, and this is what defines the early half of Noragami.
This show has
...
three main characters, Iki Hiyori, Yato, and Yukine. Hiyori is a 15 year-old Junior High student with an unhealthy obsession with professional fighting. Hiyori has a strong and loving heart, and soon becomes a kind of mother/older sister figure for Yukine.
Yato is a rude, unpolished, annoying, smelly, homeless, jersey-wearing god, seeking to build a shrine and have at least 1.2 Billion followers (way to aim high there, Yato). Though often laughed at by other gods, and made fun of by Hiyori and Yukine, it is later revealed that Yato is a powerful war god.
Yukine is the third and youngest of our trio. Yukine is the spirit of a middle schooler who died in an unknown accident. As Yato’s Shinki (weapon of the gods) he takes on the form of a handle-less katana wrapped in cloth. Though a good kid, Yukine turns out to be easily corruptible, as he is still in the hormonal age of 14. It is implied that Yukine also develops a crush on Hiyori, despite her viewing him as a little brother.
Now this is certainly rare. I actually noticed the music, and didn’t like it. Noragami only has a few background tracks, but their main action one is a strange mantra that seems out-of-place. Apart from that, the opening, Goya no Machiwase by “Hello Sleepwalker” is very good, arguably one of my favourite anime songs.
Providing that a Noragami season 2 is created, I’ll approve of the current ending. This one really snuck up on me, as there was so much action going on, I had assumed that this would be a 25 episode series, and didn’t even realize that it was over until I updated my MAL, I thought that it was just the good ending to an arc. Speaking of arcs, Noragami has the unfortunate problem that many manga adaptations run into, half way through, it completely breaks off from the original plot with the Rabo/memory arc.
I truly enjoyed Noragami and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who likes comedy, fast-paced action, and the occasional thought-provoking scene. I’ll leave you with my final rating of 9/10.

KNK is a beautiful story about a (wouldn’t you believe it) High School boy named Akihito Kanbara with a glasses fetish, and his underclassman, Mirai Kuriyama, a “bespectacled beauty”, according to Akihito. We soon learn that Akihito is half youmu, a species of demon that most of our main cast hunts. Because of his half-youmu nature, he is an immortal (or, very near immortal) meaning that he can suffer virtually any physical wound. Mirai is a Spirit World Warrior who has recently come to the human world to hunt youmu. She comes from a “cursed” clan of Spirt World Warriors, known for having the ability
...
to control their acidic blood at will, Deadman Wonderland style.
The rest of the major cast is just as lovable as well. Hiroomi Nase is a siscon Spirit World Warrior with the power of barriers, from the elite Nase family, a major player in the Spirit World Society. Mitsuki Nase is the younger sister of Hiroomi, as the siscon makes very clear. While Mitsuki also has the power of Barriers, like her brother, she mainly relies on her pet youmu, Yakiimo to do her fighting for her.
While this anime starts off as an action and comedy oriented show, it slowly evolves into story about protecting what you hold dear, and deciding what can and cannot be sacrificed. KNK also becomes a love story between Mirai and Akihito.
While avoiding spoilers, all I can say about the latter half of this series, is “wow.” KNK had a fast, yet relatively uninteresting startup, but come episode 5 or so, it really started heating up and left me on the edge of my seat every week. The final few episodes were their own form of awesome. The relationship of sarcastic distaste between Mirai and Akihito was so well built up that I ended up truly feeling for them in the final episodes, just praying for a happy ending. Speaking of the end, it was honestly one of the most well done endings I’ve ever seen, leaving just enough cliffhangers for a S2, while wrapping everything that you really care about all at the same time; and I gotta say, it is the second anime to ever make me cry at the end, the first being Sakurasou no Pet Kanojo.
As for music, I don’t really pay attention to it as well as I should, I wasn’t even planning on starting this blog until today! However, the Opening (Kyoukai no Kanata) and Closing (Daisy) themes are both incredible, and I have them both on my iPod, and listen to them on a daily basis.
I’ve never been great at giving things numbered scores, but I guess I’ll have to try to do this one justice, eh? I think that I’ll settle for an 8.5/10 because I’m not sure how bias I am. The first few episodes almost lost me, but the ending (what I remember most) was one of the best ones I’ve watched.

Outbreak Company is one of those anime that has many flaws, but is still very good. It falls into many of the fanservice traps that most harem/comedy anime fall into. Despite this, it has an interesting concept and lovable characters (for the most part.)
Our story starts out in modern Japan, where we learn that a NEET (shut-in) named Kanou Shinichi is looking for a job, and finally finds one that seems too good to be true! He takes an online test about Moe and Otaku culture, and passes it with flying colours. At this point he attends an interview for the anime company that he
...
has finished applying to and, lucky Shinichi, he gets the job! This is where things get crazy. His new boss has drugged him, and he passes out. When Shinichi reawakens, he’s in a lavish bed and room with the only other person in the room being a maid named Miusel Foaran (or Myusel, depending on the sub group) who we soon learn is a half-elf.
As it turns out, Shinichi’s new job wasn’t a regular anime company employee, but rather an ambassador to a newly discovered world (or universe, I’m not too picky) and the kingdom of The Holy Eldant Empire, and to improve bonds with it’s citizens and Japan by teaching and promoting Moe and Otaku culture. Hilarity soon ensues with the introduction of a, albeit small, harem, consisting of Petraraca En Eldant III, Miusel, Koganuma Minori, and Erubia Hanaiman. Will our hero be able to successfully spread his culture to the kingdom, or will he be cast out as “The Cultural Invader?” You’ll have to tune in to find out!
For those of you well versed in romantic comedy, you’ll see that Outbreak Company has many of its archetypes covered. Petraraca being a Tsundere loli character, Miusel being our shy, innocent character (as well as a maid!), Erubia as our happy-go-lucky large-breasted dogirl, and Minori is our yaoi shipper/soldier/tsundere.
As previously mentioned, I truly enjoyed Outbreak Company, despite the numerous fanservice scenes and “Why on earth would you do/say that, MC?” moments.
Nothing in the soundtrack particularly stuck out to me, besides a single track that played during some emotional scenes.
The ending, however, was less than satisfying. It seems that the writers decided to introduce a problem in the last few episodes just so that they could have a resolution built upon a climax structure. While the show leaves the possibility of a second season open, I highly doubt it happening due to the lack of anything truly different about it, separating Outbreak Company from other fantasy/harem anime.
All in all, I’d give Outbreak Company a 7.5/10 because of its lack of “oomph” Despite this low critical score; I’d recommend it to any harem/fanservice junkie.

So Sentakushi is another High School romcom with way too much fanservice to be taken even remotely seriously. I was all-in-all very disappointed with this anime, because the premise seemed interesting, a boy with a “Absolute Multiple Choice”, meaning that on occasion he’ll see 2+ choices, and he has do do/pick one of the choices, or he’ll get an increasingly painful headache very quickly. The catch, is that these choices are often completely ridiculous to the point of sheer stupidity.
Our story picks up with a really cool scene all about how choices shaped the world that we live in today. Soon after this ends, we
...
meet our protagonist, Kanade Amakusa. Kanade has recently developed his Absolute Choice curse for little-to-no explained reason, and as a result, his reputation has quickly taken a nose dive due to his otherwise unexplained bouts of randomness and creepiness (IE, streaking, acting like a pig, sexual molestation/touching) One day, Kanade is walking home from school when suddenly his AMC starts acting up, and due to his choice, “A beautiful young girl falls from the sky”. This girl has amnesia, and all she knows is that she is from heaven. It is soon revealed that the girl loves food, and when she attempts to eat Kande’s expensive chocolates, she asks, “Do you love chocolates?” resulting in her choosing her name as Chocolat. After choosing between death, and letting Choclat stay (which, of course, he chose the latter), our hero soon receives a phone call from God! After proving that he really is God through a series of funny means, he informs Kande that there is a way to remove his AMC curse. As it turns out, the only way to remove the curse is by successfully completing a series of “trials” with the help of Chocolat.
The characters in this series were interesting enough, albeit copy/paste of other popular characters and archetypes; but the problem lies in the complete lack of character development, even when it would have been incredibly easy and more satisfying. There are many important secondary in this anime, and as a result, I’ll only be covering four of the members of the Reject 5 (the least popular kids on campus). Furano Yukihara is a strange combination of Tsundere and Kuudere, though I can’t really complain about this… odd mixture due to her pulling it off quite well. My problem with Yukihara is that she had so much behind the scenes character development, yet she is never fully utilized. Regardless, she (in my opinion) has way too much Tsun and virtually no Dere. The last major character that I’ll talk about is Yuoji Oka, a Deredere character that is mostly immune to Kanade’s strangeness (and sexual advances, to an extent) due to her own out-there and crazy personality.
Once again, nothing really stuck out musically, including the opening or closing credits. The opening video, however, was at least interesting and complemented the show in just the perfect atmosphere and humor.
I’d love to rant about the ending and the waaaaaaay underused character, but I’m trying to keep these spoiler-free.
Overall, I, as I said earlier, am very disappointed in this show’s lack fulfilling of potential. It had a very interesting premise, and if it had been handled with a bit more maturity, Sentakushi could have been a diamond in the rough of romcoms. I’m going to have to give this a 6/10 just because it had enough plot and questions to keep me coming back.

Yūsha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shūshoku o Ketsui Shimashita, or I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job, or commonly shortened to Yu-Sibu is another Fall 2013 comedy anime.
Now, Yu-Sibu is all about a protagonist named Raul Chaser (Or, Rauru Cheisa, if you’re a direct translation kinda fan) who grew up wanting to be a hero and kill the Demon Lord. When our anime begins he is in the final days of his Hero Training, and is one of the best in his class, but when someone else kills the Demon Lord, all of the Heroes, adventure supply
...
stores, and Heroes-in-training lose their jobs. Now plunged into the regular world with little-to-no job experience outside of demon fighting, Raul is forced to get a job at a magical appliance store called Leon’s. A while after Raul gets his job he meets the secondary character, Fino Bloodstone, the daughter of the Demon Lord that Raul had sworn to kill! Despite this pair having such an interesting dynamic, Yu-Sibu keeps up an “adventure of the day” sort of feel, with a few overarching plot lines such as keeping Leon’s in business. Or at least, it did until the final few episodes.
There are a decent number of important characters in this anime, including our dynamic duo of Raul and Fino, the other employees of Leon’s, as well as other friends from around town. However, due to the happy-go-lucky feel of this anime, the only other character that felt fully utilized was Airi Ortinet, Raul’s close friend and rival from his hero days. Airi begins looking down on Raul’s deciding to get a job, however once the two meet up again after the closing of the Hero program, they slowly start rebuilding their friendship and work ethic.
Yu-Sibu had some decent background music, with a few tracks really inspiring my sense of adventure. The ending didn’t really have anything of note but the opening, oh the opening… It was a cutesy song with a very funny video. Nothing that I’d put on my iPod, but nice all the same.
It did have a bit more fanservice than I’d like, but not too much more than average for an anime of this genre/feel. In the end I’m giving Yūsha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shūshoku o Ketsui Shimashita an 8/10 because it did have some genuinely funny (albeit occasionally crude) scenes, and I could honestly relate to and feel for Raul throughout the series.

In the near future, thirty thousand Japanese players of the hit MMORPG Elder Tale suddenly wake up and find that they have somehow been thrown into the game world with no clue how to leave. Soon named “The Apocalypse”, this means that players have to learn new techniques and strategies to deal with the newfound reality, as opposed to looking at Elder Tale from a screen. Now, when first announced in the Fall Season, most people chalked it up to be another Sword Art Online clone, and never really gave it a fair chance. While it’s true that Log Horizon takes place inside of a
...
MMORPG, that’s about where the comparison stops. Whereas SAO focused on the relationship between Kirito and Asuna, Log Horizon focuses on the socio-political effects of living in a new world. By this I mean that the MMORPG format almost takes a back seat to government. Log Horizon could easily take place in a fantasy setting with the characters trying to build a kingdom, as, though the action scenes were made well and interestingly, the real glow of Log Horizon is the depth of political strategy.
Log Horizon focuses mainly on a level-90 Enchanter/Scribe named Shiroe. Before the Apocalypse, Shiroe was the lead strategist for a party named “Debauchery Tea Party”, one of the most infamous groups in all of Elder Tale. Despite his many invitations however, Shiroe chooses to never join a guild for his own reasons. Shiroe is an absolute strategic genius, though his aggressive strategies have earned him the nickname “Villain in Glasses”. Using his skills as a strategist, Shiroe beings to shape this anarchist world into a place worth living in.
The other characters are numerous and very well presented, with believable relationships and reactions to stimuli. One thing to remember is that in the final episodes, several love interests are formed, which, normally a bad thing, was presented well. By the end, most important characters are crushing/being crushed on by someone, though there was just enough foreshadowing throughout the series to make this okay.
The music in this show was done well. Nothing too above ordinary, as it only has a few different background tracks, but what it does have is presented well enough to help stimulate my emotions to wonder what was happening next. The ending theme in particular has a bit of bleeding onto the final seconds of each episode, which really got me excited for next week’s episode. Though I’ m not normally a fan of Engrish/English openings, Database was enjoyable, and I even have it on my iPod.
I’ve stressed before that the ending to a series is important, and unfortunately, Log Horizon did fall short of my expectations. Though a good episode, the final episode left many loose ends, though this was (hopefully) done to allow a season two.
*UPDATE* It has just come to my attention that a season 2 has been confirmed, in which case, I do approve of the current season 1 ending.
My final thoughts are this: don’t simply write off Log Horizon as a Sword Art Online clone, as it truly isn’t. I would certainly recommend it to any action/magic anime fan as well as anyone who enjoys watching character interact to reach difficult decisions. All-in-all, I’ll give Log Horizon an 8/10 because it was enjoyable, though not the series ever.

I started watching this anime strictly because it was marked as school life, romance, and comedy. I nearly clicked away within the first five minutes. However, despite the unwarranted fanservice in episode 1, this soon became one of my favourite series ever. It was excellently written, and I truly empathized with the characters more so than I ever have in the past (except Watamote), I wanted SOMETHING to finally go right so bad! I'm used to the feeling at the end of a good anime, but Sakurasou? I've never felt more depressed about the end. ALthough it is set up well for a season 2,
...
I don't think that we'll ever get one. I strongly recommend watching it, as you will not regret it.
