Anyway milady, how are you doing in Year of the Dragon?

Said semitomboy also loves Chihayafuru IIRC.

As for me, I kind of took a break from Silent Möbius QD for my Japanese Wild Arms 2 replay and now I'm enjoying that Kia Asamiya manga even more thanks to the original WA2 script (the Sony translation was terrible) which improved my Japanese some more.

I remember when I tried to figure out what 藍菁 meant, then I found out it these two characters were Cantonese not kanji meaning Lum Chang. Some fiery, futuristic exorcist from Hong Kong that appeared at chapter 17.

In Japan, Lum Chang literally means indigo turnip. :D

I haven't used Duolingo yet, but I had a field day with Instant Japanese (Boyé Lafayette de Mente was the best sensei there ever was, a true master; I hope his daughter is doing well and she's must have been about my age when she went to Japan with friends) and then Nihongodera, my go to online Japanese dictionary. Able to translate most characters you'll find in a Chinese Wikipedia article. That is to kanas, Romaji and English simultaneously.

The author of Instant Japanese said that modern Japan uses up to 1,945 Chinese characters. Jōyō kanji used to be made up of 60,000 Chinese characters between the Yamato and Asuka period. That is, Japan's early days. That same author only taught beginner and everyday Japanese in his book by the way so no kanji included.

Other than that, I'm currently reading Silent Möbius QD after arduously extending my Japanese vocabulary through its sequel. Silent Möbius and sequel are definitely the hardest manga to recommend besides Lindbergh (I can't read German, but my semitomboyish, North Carolina friend can who is also more mecha-savvy than me; she loves Last Exile).

Ah yes! I still have yet to complete The Little Witch From Mercury that a half-Asian tomboy recommended to me by sending me a Youtube video link to episode one. I'll still watch it even though I've been bombarded with homework, but it's for the good of my PhD, my future degree.

In general, that anime should definitely in my currently watching list.

Mamiko Noto is also one of my favorite people. One of the reasons why I loved watching Solty Rei in Japanese and one of the best things about Valkyria Chronicles (yes, she was the lovely Gallian princess who cares for her country).

The fact that you've seen me complete that 2004 Sakura Wars OVA means that I'm kind of a Sega fanboy. I really want to know every detail about Sakura Wars. Possibly the most underrated franchise ever. Us westerns never get a chance to see the Paris combat revue story.

I know how you feel milady. Great men like Kentaro Miura, Boyé Lafayette de Mente, Stan Lee, Osamu Tezuka and many others passed away. But that's why they're legendary.

With that said, thanks for responding.

ご挨拶貴婦人!

Pardon me milady, but have you been studying Japanese too?

Ah! Berserk, my Ontarian friend about your age loves that manga also.

I love supernatural/fantasy/fiction novels, so I'm definitely going to try and check some of those out :)
I haven't been watching any dramas recently also. I finished up one Korean drama during the summer, and since then I haven't been able to really pick another one up and enjoy it like I used to. But hopefully I'll be able to find a really good one and continue watching them again.
As for college....I'm taking everything really slow. Because I'm taking a gap year to go to Japan in October, I haven't applied to any schools. I do know that some schools allow you to defer, but I just decided not to.
After graduation, I plan to work and save up money for Japan, as well as for college (mom and dad aren't going to help pay for any of it). And I might take some pre-req classes at PCC. When I do eventually return to school, I want to apply to Universty of Washington and study either International Business and minor in Asian studies...or study/major in Animation and minor in Japanese.
So many tough decisions, but as of right now I just want to finish senior year strong. So far my grades have been straight A's and a C in statistics. Hahaha it's looking pretty good at the moment.

I'm horrible at finishing animes, so that's why I make small goals for myself. So far I've only finished two (Diabolik Lovers and Sword Art Online) on my current list, but I'm very close to finishing two more (Bleach and Psycho Pass). I'll try to binge watch Bleach episodes on the weekends, but I find myself getting distracted and starting new animes. Unfortunately, during the week days I have almost no time to watch anything. I'll get finished with school, then go to tennis practice, come home and eat dinner, do homework, and by the time I am done with everything, I am wayyy too tired to keep my eyes open. :(
I've never been much of a reader, but I do like to do it. What are some of the books you've been reading? And are there any you'd recommend?
This past summer I was into vampires (I have no idea why), and so I starting reading a series by Charlane Harris (It's actually the books the HBO TV Series 'True Blood' was based off of). I only got through four of the series, but once I get some more free time, I'm planning on finishing them all.
I can't wait until I graduate, and have the whole summer to be able to catch up on everything I've been wanting to do. =^_^=
goldenrabbit Mar 12, 2015 10:47 PM
I was aware of that. hahah But you have watched so many! I don't think I'll ever be able to catch up. :P

I’m a bit slow replying here. So you’re trying to branch out then?

Anyway, my personal favorite manga is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (particularly Part 3), and what I particularly like about it is that despite first impressions due to the wackiness, the fights are clever. It values strategy and planning over just punching really hard, so like FMA it's quite intelligent for a shonen manga (although I consider FMA to be a different kind of intelligent). It’s not for everyone, but I like spreading the word about it anyway because it doesn’t get the love it deserves in my opinion.

If you like Berserk, try Shin Angyo Onshi. It's basically Berserk, except it's Korean and it actually ends. Blade of the Immortal, Vagabond and Vinland Saga are also cool action manga. There's also Shingeki No Kyojin, which I've only read a couple of volumes of but was really good (and really brutal). If you like explosions and nonsense, watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Black Lagoon. Haibane Remei is a really sweet fantasy anime and I consider it a must watch. As for supernatural, I’m still sticking with Mononoke on this one, but I recommend Ano Hana as well.

Also I know you’re looking for different things, but I noticed that although you clearly like yaoi/shonen-ai, you haven’t read my favourite, which is Konbini-kun. I’m not all that big on yaoi myself, but I really liked this one because it was both down to earth and dealt with some of the struggles that LGBT people go through in real life (also it’s quite sweet and has nice art). So give that a read if you ever get a spare chance.

And on a tangent, you liked the Hakuouki anime. Have you played the visual novel? It was released in English on PSP last month.

If you would like anime recommendations, I'd be happy to give some.

You appear to be a fan of shojo, therefore I highly recommend watching Revolutionary Girl Utena, which is the best shojo I have ever watched. Princess Tutu is also a very good one. There's Madoka Magica as well, although that technically isn't shojo. Good romantic anime that I would recommend are Spice & Wolf, Katanagatari, Nodame Cantabile, Honey & Clover, and Kaiba. As for romantic films, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, (most of) the films of Makoto Shinkai, and Hotarubi No Mori E (based on a manga from the creator of Natsume Yuujinchou).

If you like supernatural stories as in Natsume, Mushishi and xxxHolic, I recommend Mononoke (not to be confused with Princess Mononoke). If you like the episodic wanderer style of Mushishi, give Kino's Journey a try.

And then there's Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Planetes, which I would recommend to anyone.

As for right now, well other than Natsume the best thing currently airing in my opinion would be Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou.
