Oh boy, Guilty Crown, eh? Now, I'm not exactly new to the animu world, but I'm going to take a look at probably one of the more controversially "DOES THIS ANIME SUCK OR DOES THIS ROCK" animes without looking entirely at what it copies.
Story- It's okay. What I really did like was the rebellion and the disease and the really really cool technology. It felt very nicely fleshed out. Now, if we get to the meat of the story, it's a whole different perspective, because frankly, I had no idea what was going on at the end. It was as if they just tossed some

random crap in because they could and because they could not move on from their favourite character dying or whatever. ...Not like anyone does, anyway. Or so I say and so you trust me. But really, it felt like an unseasoned writer of some sorts wrote it because they couldn't detach themselves from their favourite character or whatever. People who have watched this completely know who I'm talking about. There are some things that happen because there's a plot. The plot itself is pretty forgettable, but the fleshed out setting was really nice, which gives it a 7 for me.
Art- It's redjuice, it's awesome, and any screencap is GOOD. Really, the redeeming thing about Guilty Crown is how nice it looks, every frame is a piece of work which is a bit surprising, considering the reputation of Production IG. I'm looking at you, Kemono no Souja with that absolutely wonderful distance off-model. But really, the art is fantastic, and the character designs are so nice that even a person like me will go and gladly buy a Inori figure because of her nice design.
Sound- It's supercell, it's awesome, and every song is good, if not considering it has laughable English, and from what I've heard, German. I really don't understand Japan's fixation on different languages they can barely pronounce, but apparently, they like that sort of thing. However, Bios is a really nice track, and almost every track is, especially the more 'full orchestra' sounding ones. There is one song that has the singer saying 'rearise' and it makes me laugh from where you live and back to where I live every time, but the background music is overall really cool. Though, Guilty Crown to me isn't really one that works with vocal background music very well, unless it's Bios or that one rappy song I can't remember for anything. Also another redeeming thing about Guilty Crown for some people.
Character- Just about every character is boring. Inori is boring. Gai, although pretty BA, is boring. Daryl is just crazy. Almost every single one is pretty forgettable, except for Shu. Shu's a pretty interesting guy, you've got to admit that, if you've watched it all. His (predictable cliche, always happens sort of shounen technique and thus not really qualifying as spoiler unless you are not genre savvy at all) BSOD is possibly the greatest thing that ever happens in the character realm because it fleshes him out and turns him into a work of art that I would really like to fondle immediately because you have to admit, it's pretty realistic. Mmm, BSODs. Everyone else is a cliche (he himself is a cliche, but I love his BSOD self very much as a character and not a person) and pretty forgettable, unless you're talking about design, and then everyone else gets kinda up there in the unforgettable part. I do really like Shu, copy of Lelouch/Shinji or not, because guess what, I just don't caaaaaaare.
Enjoyment- I don't watch mecha anime often. This anime just looked too nice to pass by and was really great for the first two episodes (Gai is, as I said, pretty BA), but then had to revert to the cliche stereotypes of school and the government conspiracy and action and that sort of whatnot ugh. It's so predictable it bored me to bits but I loved watching the action, because even me and my plot driven mind loved the action and the art. And of course, parts and bits of the hatedom with the "Code Evangelion" mixup sort of belief made me kind of hate it a bit too. I personally think it is a pretty okay anime, by looks, but by everything else, not really. This is one of the animes that if you don't think about it very hard if you're plot driven you'll enjoy, like I did to a degree.
Overall- Saying if I liked it or not... I did like it, and that's on a very thin slope. We don't talk about the preachy and nonsensical and stupid ending, okay. We don't talk about the certain developments of some characters, the bad English and German singing, or the opinion that it was a rip off of every mecha anime on the planet. It was okay. It was an okay anime. Nothing original, nothing special, but it looked nice, it sounded nice, and the setting obviously had a lot of love in development. I am going to say this though-- if you seriously thought that this anime had a lot to preach and is a masterpiece and unpredictable, I think you need to go read some more books, watch some more anime, and watch Guilty Crown again, because honestly, it's predictable and so cliche all my alligator tears roll down my cheeks and into your mouth because you're pretty wrong.

Muhyo and Roji's BSI is probably one of my very favourite mangas ever, although I don't read very many. It has a lot of special traits to it that I love greatly, and so goes a run through.
The story is pretty good-- spirit possession with our snarky protagonist Muhyo and his wimpy helper Roji that quickly turns into a long story arc that begins in volume 4 and ends at around 15. It keeps you wrapped in pretty nicely, and the battles are nicely made with actual substance and logic to them rather than just "because I felt like lasers" sort of feeling. Art- The ... |
