This manga is like the graphic manifestation of a redditor's conception of Christianity.
Not only is it terribly generic, it's also incredibly cringe and one-way in its conflict (bad guys vs good guys). PLUS several of the biblical quotes they use throughout the story are taken out of context for the convenience of the narrative. The "criticisms" of religion don't make any sense because they literally look like they were made by a 12 year old in his edgy fedora stage. I suppose it has a good drawing, and the relationship between the protagonists is not so terribly written, but I don't recommend it

blue lock is bad, very bad in fact. Let's explore why.
Blue lock is a "football" manga that, more than football, is an edgy shonen of teenagers with super powers, basically a wolf in sheep's clothing. This means that any attempt to rescue some knowledge or learning about the sport it tries to represent is completely useless. As a football player or fan you won't find anything of value,
the author has no idea of football, what's more, he seems to hate it. Several of the bases of the sport are completely ignored by the childish and chuuni ideas of football that blue lock offers. Whenever

the author wants to use examples of real players, as if he were the typical person who doesn't know anything about football and wants to fit in, he uses the same 4 names; sometimes misparaphrasing the phrases of the players, and if he doesn't do this, he uses a player invented by his universe with phrases that fit their ridiculous ideologies. This last thing brings me to the next point I want to make and one of BLUE LOCK'S MAJOR MISTAKES: Does the blue lock ideology really work even in ITS own world?
The answer is no. It was to be expected from a universe where soccer works with our same rules, the problem is that sometimes the manga is desperate to read because the characters and the author constantly seem to realize that their philosophy does NOT make sense, but when they seem Being on the brink of reaching this logical realization, the manga invents atomic-level stupidity to follow through inorganically. The most exasperating and ridiculous cases, for example, is when Barou, one of THE WORST characters in the manga, literally does not pass the ball and the conclusion they reach, after stating that perhaps passing the ball is a good idea, is to steal the ball BETWEEN THEM; or when Rin realizes that he has a team that accompanies him and he is not alone but decides to put all this aside to awaken his edgy cringe power up that makes his eyes black and he begins to stick out his tongue while drooling and says such mature phrases like "ogah destroy kill bogah"
If blue lock fails miserably in the sports section, how about all the rest? How about the messages and philosophy that the work raises?
Here we realize that the biggest problem with blue lock is ROOTED in its CORE, what the actor wants to convey to us, his messages and idolologies are as painful as his knowledge of football.
The EGO as a central theme is great! I am one of those people who do not believe that this is completely bad like many, on the contrary, like all feelings I believe that it is something good! the important thing is not to let it control us, unfortunately blue lock goes to an extreme contrary to this idea, a harmful one, one that seems to have been fathered by an edgy 14-year-old boy who was chosen last in physical education class; leaving us with panels as iconic and painful as the one where ego says that dreams that cannot be fulfilled "have no value" or the aforementioned moments (literally phrases that seem to have been ripped from a villain from a children's movie)
The manga, despite suffering the same problem as other spokon manga that only 2 or 3 characters matter in a team and the rest are npc without personality, has certainly nice characters and they have a good design, unfortunately its development is a complete disaster full of of phrases taken from your 14-year-old cousin's twitter. Other than that, the drawing and paneling are truly excellent and the mind games, when they're not bullshit, are entertaining to read. Nothing can take away from BL that it is a truly fun and fast reading experience, which despite that maintains all its errors.
Minors and aspiring players who are reading this review, please, don't base your personalities on blue lock and don't follow anything this manga says. Instead of fake players saying the convenient phrases the mangaka needs to make his point, listen to the TRUE AND REAL best player in football history:

I genuinely tried to like Bokutachi ga Yarimashita. I like the bastard characters, I like their broken relationships, I like the drama, and I like the themes.
But my god I don't like the ending. The chapters from 65 with the boys wanting to confess and exonerate their sins seem great to me, why couldn't it end there?
everything that follows feels like an inorganic and forced articulation of events to make another joke of black humor, throwing everything built overboard. It even feels like a cowardly move. (I mean, even the blonde comes out of nowhere, at the specific place at the specific time to have
...
sex)
I could have let all this go since I liked what they were doing with Tobio, sadly the ending is.....strange? as cowardly confused and open. It just doesn't tell me anything, or I'm too stupid to understand it. (what's up with the last panel, what the hell does it mean?)
the only thing that was saved from the end is Paisen, the only one that had a consistent development and with a satisfactory ending.
I know a lot of people can't handle the style of humor, but personally I was REALLY liking it. I don't know what the hell happened in the end.

This is an updated review, and I feel the need to do so because the reviews at the top of the page are over 1 DECADE old.
Did it change much the perception that not only I, but people in general have of this manga? let's see it
To take a weight off my shoulders, I LOVE the first two arcs of this manga. It is one of the most moving stories of revenge, coming of age and redemption that exist. easy 9 or 10. Unfortunately from that moment the manga goes downhill.

these are executed poorly or tend to be very childish "not all people understand with words" is as easy as understanding that. Vinland saga was a brilliant example of how to execute a believable and moving wooden pacifist message (like gundam). The problem is that this reaches the point of absurdity after the second arc, falling into the sick, idealistic and childish.
The "baltic sea" arc (who started the decay) has MANY PROBLEMS.
Not only does this "passifism" end up being completely ridiculous, seeing Thorfinn spare the lives of rapists, murderers and psychopaths as if nothing had happened; going to a war WITH ONLY HIS HANDS. His attitude DOES NOT FIT in the context of the manga. The uncomfortable reality is that Thorfin wouldn't be able to do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING or live by HIS FOOLISH PHILOSOPHY if he wasn't a stupid powerful being (as he apparently possesses supernatural abilities).
But that my friend is not the only problem. So that this is not too extensive, we are going to list them.
-A highly disconsonant change of tone. It went from having a more dense tone that had its brief comedy and break moments to lighten the mood, to having tons of slightly off-kilter humor and even a fart joke. even the exploration of themes was greatly diminished. One could argue that this is due to thorfinn leaving more toxic holes and his evolution, but the change is too exaggerated and more so considering that we come from the arc of the farm that executes this change better.
- humor that is VERY out of place
-Mishandling of issues
-Unidirectionality in conflicts. There is no longer a "grey" morality, now you are on the side of the messiah Thorfinn or the author will demonize you as a caveman.
-Introduce Hyld, who is a mery sue without any flaws, Extremely intelligent and strong with the personality of a wooden plank. that she only has ONE DIALOGUE DURING THE WHOLE MANGA and that it is highly irritating (the case is so sad that her "best moment" is not even starred by her lmao, but by Thorfinn)
Etc etc.
All these problems are deeply rooted in the CORE of vinalnd saga and the message that it wants to give that it simply DOES NOT WORK and nobody will ever be able to apply it in their real life.
Anyway, although it may not seem like it, I like this manga, and its two arcs will always have a place in my heart. I just hate what it has become.

I don't like my hero academia.
That's probably what many people who have been recommended this manga to have said; And don't worry, I don't like it either, but please don't let that stigma become an excuse not to read one of the BEST shonen of recent years.

I will also defend why it seems better than the original story.
It's hard to put into words how moving and inspiring this manga is, but I'm going to do my best to convince you guys to give it a try.
Starting with the characters, here we do not focus on many at the same time (as in the main manga) but we focus on exploring in depth our 3 protagonists and their experiences with the other inhabitants of the Naruhata neighborhood. This simple premise shows us one of the key factors of VIGS; its more reduced and daily approach makes us feel more involved, more related and allows us to get to know our protagonists in depth. there is the magic of koichi, that character that you surely heard that everyone loves and proclaims is better than deku. He's an every man, a guy who could never take the exam to be a hero (for saving anyone's life) and couldn't have gotten in anyway due to his useless quirk. When Koichi is injured or in danger, it hurts us, when Koichi grows as a person and improves his quirk we feel happy, when someone recognizes his worth, we feel proud. He has the heart of a hero, but because of the society he lives in, he cannot be one. It's a lot like "Spiderman" in a lot of ways. On the other hand we have the beloved ND, the master, a complex character who moves the plot, an unorthodox guy who is not what he seems at first glance. Telling them more about the beauty of these characters would ruin the experience, so let's leave it at that. Truly the heart of the series.
One of the most reprehensible points, at least for me, of the original manga is the poor world building. How does society work? Which are the rules? Why are fucking psychopaths like Bakugo not only admitted as heroes, but also all their attitudes of high danger to society are minimized? Why does a society with super powers work in the same way as ours? Everything is configured in an inorganic way, for much of the work we are deprived of seeing people's daily lives and it ends up being something unlikely, unidirectional and simplistic. On the other hand, vigs not only takes away from this lore but for some reason IMPROVES IT. Not only the customs, laws and rules that govern society enjoy a natural and diegetic exposure thanks to the more everyday environment in which it develops, but we also see the history, consequences and problems that a society of heroes implies. All this has a great weight in the development of the manga and is one of the central points, the so-called "sociology of the hero"
The series even goes further and dares to brilliantly tell and explore characters like aizawa and gives prominent participation to characters without much dialogue or greater narrative weight like midnight (at least at the time of publication)
One of the points that bothered me the most about the original series was how shallow the "hero" genre was in the title. Being relegated in many instances to something more stylistic and superficial because at the end of the day it was still a manga IN LARGE PART of teenagers with super powers who attend a school, must go through tests and have tournament arcs (sounds similar don't you think ?) . On the other hand, vigs opts for a more urban aesthetic that fits him like a glove, drinking a lot from superhero comics and getting closer to the idea of "a superhero manga." This influence can even be seen on the covers.
Although this series will always be a 10 in my heart, my objective side does not allow me to give it more than an 8/10 (an excellent mark). This is due to some inconsistencies, some sections that are a bit simple and several asspull during the final arc (note SOME, others are well justified) and well, all might, that despite liking it a lot, it breaks too much with the tension.
There is still much to mention, such as the excellent villain, or the drawing. But going any further would be redundant and I don't want to ruin the extremely SATISFACTORY experience that is reading this short manga. Highly recommended and a must read for shonen fans.
