I watched the English dub many years ago on Adult Swim. Maybe I was a little too young back then. I just remembered it as "that weird trippy anime."
And so, I rewatched FLCL on a whim a couple weeks ago during a sleepless night (I'm a full blown insomniac).
As a kid, Naota looks up, perhaps not to the adults around him, but to his brother as a sort of "parental" figure and uses his image of him as guidance for himself. As a kid it's natural to think that people that are older than you know what's going on and have a plan.
Growing up
...
though, you figure out that's not the case at all - no one knows what they're doing in life.
FLCL is about growing up.
FLCL is about love, and how love is a hard game.
Maybe FLCL struck a chord with me now that I'm a little older than I was when I watched it many years ago.
Maybe I just "get" it now.
Whatever it is, I can't see myself giving it anything less than a perfect score because of it.

There isn't really a satisfactory review for this awesome show, so I thought I'd write one.
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere is an adaptation of a light novel of the same name. The premise is that Musashi (the main ship or the protagonists of our story), is trying to recover the emotions of P-01s, aka Horizon Ariadust, as they were taken from her to create WMDs. However, Musashi is not considered a world player in this setting, because they're simply exiles from Japan, who are being watched by the Testament Union, who "guides" the world by making sure that history is reenacted.
This premise sounds pretty
...
confusing, and admittedly it is, due to the insane depth of universe. There are a LOT of terms and truthfully, a language system (it's Japanese, with a few quirks), that you have to get used to. The result of this though, is a sci-fi / fantasy epic that I don't think even Kinoko Nasu could hold a candle to.
The show (in my opinion) is heavily dialogue driven (remember, this is a show about historical reenactment, but reenactment comes through interpretation). There will be some pretty intense dialogue scenes as a result, since the premise of the show pretty much requires some sort of politics.
However, the action (e.g., fights) are not skimped on at all (ever seen a city-ship do a backflip?) The characters are all interesting, with their own quirks, and even seemingly minor characters are explored and play a role in the story. The animation is excellent, with an amazing soundtrack to boot (it's great in season 1, and just awesome in season 2).
Admittedly Horizon isn't a show for everyone, but if you're willing to get through a little exposition (about 5-6 episodes of season 1), you're in a for a real treat, (what I believe to be the best action show in years).
Looking forward to season 3 and beyond!

In a word, I think I'd call this show "weird."
It's definitely a comedy, and definitely, while on the surface light actually is pretty dark.
Each "arc" of the show is more or less totally separate from each of the other ones, though I think a pretty good job was done with jumping around the different arcs (iirc, the light novels were not written in the order that the anime was).
Personally, I find the theme of the show to be exactly what the title implies it to be -- the decline of humanity. In general, each arc will begin with an episode that takes a look at
...
some quality of humanity, or introduces some archetype of humanity, then is generally followed by an episode of total downfall.
At the end of each arc there is no longer any surprise as to exactly why in this setting, humanity has declined. Yet there is a certain sweetness to once was; and so while one might find the antics of the characters to be foolish, you can't really help but smile in sweet nostalgia while you think : "something like this happened to me once".
9/10 -- I'd like to give it a 10, and while I find the weirdness and caricaturization to be part of jintai's charm, at times I also find the show to be a little too weird.

BEST COMEDY OF 2011-2012. 10/10.
Oh wait. This isn't a comedy?
Well then.
Where do I even start with this mess, then?
Guilty Crown seemed to promise to be one of the best series of the season when it first aired. Boy, was I wrong.
...
The writing in this show is an absolute mess and tends to try to just throw random plot devices at you in random intervals to try and surprise you. It is not particularly surprising, but it's a bit cute (cute as in, a child seems to be writing the show).
The characters are really awful. The writing staff seems to be trying their hardest to make characters of a certain archetype, and to make characters stick to their archetype without fail. I'm not sure if they realize that character complexity is derived from the fact that people aren't simple enough to act only based on a single characteristic, or if they're just trying to create characters that might possibly mature. So far, it seems to be the former.
The show has many laughable situations. Take episode 6, for example. Fully armed guards, holding guns in their hands, charge at an enemy instead of shooting with their guns, resulting in a teenage girl killing them without returning a single shot. Hilarious, but I don't think that was really the intention.
That's not to say the show's completely awful. The art, animation, and music are really quite good, even if at times they cut a few corners. But really, a mess with art, animation, and music is still a mess.
So? The bottom line? Don't take this show seriously. You'll be able to enjoy it a lot more if you don't. Because... well... it's funny to ridicule at least.
