H2O: Footprints in the Sand (Anime) add

H2O: Footprints in sand in my mind should be re-titled to H2O won't even wash this anime's ending out of your mind. Even to this day this is one of the few animes that can stir up extreme anger in me by just thinking about the ending. To think an episode and a half (last half of episode 11 and all of 12) could just completely kill a story so badly.

Togainu no Chi (Anime) add

Ho boy here we go. I knew one day I was going to actually write out a review for this lovely piece of work, and today is that day.

For a little background on this piece, this anime is based off of the first BL visual novel released in 2005 by a branch of Nitroplus called Nitro+CHiRAL. This visual novel then got a manga series in 2006, and finally this anime came out in 2010. This anime was supposed to be the 5th year celebration of this game.

Instead of being a celebration though, this anime right here is the perfect example of ... what not to do with a visual novel. There are just so many things wrong with this anime that it is just mind boggling.

Let's start with the story first. Now the anime tries to follow the story of the visual novel in a way, but it ends up becoming a jumbled mess with a lot of omission/slapping in stuff from different routes in random places that it left me scratching my head wondering "What the heck is going on?" I already know the plot now and yet even as I go back to watch it I still find myself being left confused for how poorly they play out the story here. What's even more damning is one particular point in the anime that literally breaks a whole plot-point if you know exactly what it is. I'll try not to spoil much, but it involves a bag.
I'm not saying the story in it's original form is a masterpiece, but the anime's version of the story is just plain awful.

Moving on to art, I just have no words other than enjoy staring at buildings. Because this anime loves to show you buildings! There are even points in the anime where you can hear action going on and instead you get shots of just buildings. I almost thought the anime was screwed up, but instead that's actually how it was made. No video mess ups, just created to where you will hear action and fighting and instead get an image of buildings or walls, only for it to cut back after the fight is over and assure you that some serious business went down by making sure you see vast amounts of liquid that should be blood but comes out looking like red dyed corn syrup.
Not only that but the character designs are just terrible. I know that the anime and the visual novel/manga can't have the same kind of graphics, but some of the choices in designs are questionable, especially with Keisuke(the main character's friend) later on.

Speaking of characters, even though the characters in this series weren't too deep in the original format in the anime they just seem as lifeless as Arbitro's boy toys. And sometimes completely out of character (here's looking to you Shiki).

The only two good things I can point out about this is that the music can fantastic to listen to (ending theme has the tendency to change and that's cool) but it's kind of forgettable and that eventually I found myself laughing at everything wrong with this anime.

In the end though, I really wouldn't recommend this anime to anyone unless you were gathering up things to watch for a bad movie/anime marathon. And even then I would probably try to steer it away from you.

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Anime) add

Mixed Feelings

So I watched Summer Wars and the Girl Who Leapt Through time and enjoyed them! I mean I thought they were pretty enjoyable and great and I could sit through those two no problem. When I heard about this movie I was pretty darn excited for it and sat down happy to see it. However, my happy mood was fairly broken once the story started going...

I liked how the beginning rolled out with how Hana and the father of her two children met and whatnot, but then when it cut into the really long sequence of them having wonderful family time together, I had a ... sinking feeling I knew what was going to happen next. And lo and behold, it did happen. A little disappointing for me but I didn't think it was that bad.

I had a pretty good time watching Hana's kids Ame and Yuki growing up and feeling for her with the hardships she went through and how she moved for her children and made friends with the locals. I wished I could have seen more interactions with the locals and stuff actually. I was getting to enjoy them.

Other than that my problems with the flick come with the development of Ame and Yuki. It just felt really underdeveloped once they moved and too... Simple.

Yuki is the one who doesn't want to be a wolf and tries to go through school and in the end does fine even though Souhei knew she was a wolf after she attacked him and he promised not to give out her secret, so then she left home to keep going to school and be more human. That's her plot all wrapped up!

Also what the heck happened to Souhei afterwards? It felt like he was just there to be a kind of the point to make Yuki not want to be a wolf, and then after it's cleared up he just disappears off the face of the planet. That was extremely disappointing because I was hoping there would be some indication what happened to the dude, but instead there's just. Nothing. He just vanishes after his plot point was done with. Like he was a toss away character and I thought that was wrong.

Other than that Ame's growth was kind of weird to me. He was a shy/scared boy at first but then started learning more about nature and eventually embraced his wolf side and then... Left home because his teacher died so he had to take over.

Maybe it's just me but I thought it was weird he just left his teacher to kind of die in a sense? I mean if the fox's leg was broken couldn't he have asked his mom to get some of the people in the wildlife reserve to help the injured fox instead of just up and letting the one who he really seemed to care about just die? I guess he could have been thinking more animal-like in a sense here, but the fox was obviously an important figure to him but the instant things went south he was just like "His leg is broken, he's probably not going to make it. When he dies I'm going to take over mom, bye."

Also that makes me think of some plot points I still didn't get like, why did her children not change during the Full Moon like their father? Also why did Ame's eyes turn red after the fight?

Even with these flaws then I don't completely outright hate the movie. I liked Hana's character as a whole and how they showed her growing along with her children, as well as the supporting casts. The animation (when they didn't use that first person running mode) and music were beautiful too! But all and all the movie just kind of felt black and white in the end of the development of the two main focuses of the story. One went to the far left and one went to the far right, and Hana was left alone in the strange middle ground I felt I was in with her. I really wanted to enjoy the flick but I just couldn't find myself doing that. It felt like it was really missing something enjoyable and was too simple with the choices these wolf children had to pick.
