Story: (Spoilers)
I liked how the tournament was handled. Many shounens fall victim to never ending tournament arcs. Here you had multiple fights happening in a single episode, and the show is not the lesser because of that as it gave the main characters more air time. Since the beginning of season 2 there was an escalation between Deku and Shouto, leading up to their amazing fight in the tournament, which was a highlight of this season.
I also like how the hero killer arc was handled. It initially came in place as Lida's quest for revenge, but it eventually touched on much more. It was nice
...
to see that Deku is finally able to use his power without hurting himself. Unfortunately, I wished to see more of Bakugo during this arc. His internship seemed like a cheap plot device to not include him on what was going on. In comparison, Uraraka's internship was at least useful as she got better in combat; all Bakugo got was a pair of jeans and a haircut. As the hero killer arc ends, the main antagonist of the series, All for one, is finally revealed to the viewer.
Finally, the finals. It was an interesting way to showcase pro heroes that we've never seen fighting before. Bakugo and Deku get some character development during their fight, but other than that there is not much happening. The end of the arc fleshes out the league of villain more, with new faces coming in and preparations for the plot lines of season 3. With that said, the story remains a bit simplistic and linear.
7/10
Art:
Amazing animation, fight scenes and effects. 9/10
Sound:
Fulfills its role, and gives hype. I liked the second opening too. 9/10
Characters:
I liked the character development that Shouto got in this season. We also got to see Lida dealing with the injury of his brother. It is definitely an improvement over season 1, but other than that most characters basically remained the same as they were by the end of the first season. 7/10
Enjoyment:
The more accelerated pace that Hero Academia brings to the shonen genre is welcome and makes each episode to be enjoyable to watch. 8/10
Overall:
Season 2 delivers a solid continuation to what was a solid first season. Hero Academia is indeed a solid addition to the shonen genre. Though it could find better ways to use their characters and advance the plot, the show feels fresh and is enjoyable to watch with little to no dull moments. Looking forward to season 3. 8/10

The first season of Hero Academia introduces us to the show's universe and prepares the viewer for the next seasons. It is a solid addition to the shonen genre, though it comes with the usual weaknesses.
Story: (Spoilers)
In a One Punch man-esque universe where everyone has a superpower, our protagonist, Deku, has none. "All men are not created equal" is the initial premise of the show. And though later on Deku is gifted with a power by captain America, I mean, All Might, he still needs to put effort in order to be even able to use his power. The show is telegraphing the viewer a
...
good message, that no matter how you are born, you can put effort in order to achieve great things. My criticism to the initial premise of the show however, is that the message can be diluted by the fact that Deku is only able to become a hero because he got lucky and gifted a power. He then goes on to become the standard shonen hero archetype: a young man with great power struggling to control it. Nonetheless, it is a interesting twist to the shonen premise, but a basic shonen premise nonetheless. 7/10
Art:
Great animation and effects. 10/10
Sound:
I like the opening and the sound effects give a lot of hype to the show's important moments. 10/10
Characters:
The many heroes and students of this show all feel very unique and distinct, so the show succeeds in providing a good diversity of characters and personalities. However, most of them seem shallow and one dimensional, even for shonen standards. Besides, the main characters of the show are a simple recycling of shonen's most overused archetypes. In terms of archetypes, the main character is not very different from Naruto or Goku, Bakugo is not very different from Sasuke, Ishida or Vegeta, and Uraraka is not very different from Sakura and Orihime. Which is mostly fine since this is after all a shonen, but I can't say the characters are very original other than their designs. I feel like a Yu Yu Hakusho for example, was a shonen with much more interesting main characters. I would normally give the characters of the show a mediocre grade, but each individual character's design is very unique and fits well with the universe. We also have some very interesting that stand out such as Eraser Head, Tomura Shigaraki and All Might. 7/10
Enjoyment:
I always find it enjoyable to discover a new interesting universe and characters. I think one of the great advantages Hero Academia has over most shonens, is that it feels much more fast paced. Previous shonens are infamous for the long drawn out fights and arcs, yet Hero Academia keeps it short and sweet. Also, the great animation and sound effects keep me hooked from start to finish. In short, this anime is much more efficient in delivering the overall shonen experience. So even though in principle the show does not bring anything new to the shonen genre in terms of plot and character development, it stills feels fresh and enjoyable. 8/10
Overall:
It's a good show that benefits greatly from its good animation, though the characters and plot could be deeper. It remains a very enjoyable experience and is a good addition to the shonen genre. The first season got me interested and I will definitely watch the next seasons. 8/10

Death Note tells the story of Kira, a serial killer who uses a death note to create a new world under his sense of justice.
Story (spoilers):
The first few episodes of Death Note have one of the best plots I have ever experienced. It is smart and captivating, and keeps you engaged. From the first episode up to Ray Penbar's wife death, the story was simply flawless. However, I would not say that it became predictable as it certainly was not, but later on the story was as captivating. After the first few episodes up to L's death, the plot was good, but not exceptional. However
...
after that, the story lost part of its charm and was not a engaging. The anime's premise is great, and overall Death Note had a good story, however I believe that if shorter, the anime's plot could have been a masterpiece. 7/10
Art:
The art fits the dark theme of the show masterfully and reaches its goal. The atmosphere is clearly appropriate to what's happening. However because of the nature of this anime, there is not much action or special effects going on, so it can't be considered a masterpiece in animation. 8/10
Sound: The soundtrack of death note is great. Although I disliked the second opening, the first one was excellent in my opinion. However, it is not something out of this world that I'll remember in my deathbed. 8/10
Enjoyment:
I liked Death Note a lot the first time I saw it. It is captivating and the themes of morality the anime touched on are certainly interesting. What is just? Do the ends justify the means? The corporate arc even took a jab at the greed of corporations. However, Death Note remains to me a slight letdown plot wise. 7/10
Overall: Death Note served to me as a bridge from classic shonen animes like DBZ and Naruto to deeper and more engaging ones. The dark theme is great, the premise was excellent and overall, despite everything, the story was fairly good as well. The rivalry between L and Light can be exhilarating, and you are always wondering what will Light do next. Be it him explaining to Ryuk how his drawer works, to him realizing that his long con plan of erasing his own memories worked, the unveiling of his plans are always exciting to watch. 8/10

One Punch Man tells the story of Saitama, a hero capable of defeating enemies in just one punch.
Story:
One Punch Man starts out with a curious premise for its story. How can an anime about enemies dying in one punch be any good? Well, in the case of OPM, it simply is. The anime blends humour to its plot extremely well, making the initial premise be possible to achieve. Yet, when you go deeper than the funny surface, you will find the plot surrounding the heroes association high echelons to be full of mystery and intrigues. This mixture of fun plot, and good quality plot makes
...
it so OPM has an above average story compared to its genre. But still, due the nature of the anime, the plot is still relatively simple. Overall, the story achieved its goal, and went a bit further beyond by introducing interesting intrigues inside the hero association.
8/10
Art:
Animes are first and foremost animations. Some animes simply can not explore the full potential of animation if they are without fights and conversation centric. This is not the case of OPM. OPM delivers the best the anime industry has to offer. Intricate fights full of magnificent special effects are present in OPM since the beginning to the end. There is simply only one rating I could give here.
10/10
Sound:
Likewise, the sound on this anime is on point. Visual special effects often come with sound effects. The soundtracks were also very good and catchy, and got us hyped whenever they needed to.
9/10
Characters:
I highly rate characters when they are well developed, or when they are highly charismatic, or both for the highest ratings. I think it is not a mystery here that the characters of OPM are extremely charismatic. All main characters and S heroes have a unique feel to themselves. Which is precisely what characters of this genre of anime are supposed to achieve. However, some characters have extra depth added to them. Mainly Genos and some of the other heroes, and Saitama to a certain extend. All in all, the characters in OPM are extremely charismatic, while having some character development in some cases.
8/10
Enjoyment:
OPM is the anime I looked for each week. I liked its humor, all the fights, and story. The hype was real. I understand this is a personal preference, but OPM was the best anime I watched in awhile.
10/10
Overall:
OPM brings the best of the anime industry. The best animation I've seen in anime is here, the fights are excellent, the story is funny with some complexity, and characters are memorable. Eventually, I will forget about most anime characters, but I will not forget about Saitama for awhile. One Punch Man delivered a memorable experiences, and is one of the best animes out there.
9/10
I seriously hope they produce more seasons in the future.

Katanagatari tells the story of Togame and Shichika in their quest to collect the 12 Deviant Blades.
Story: (this section contains spoilers)
The initial premise is a good, but difficult one. Even though these are 40 minutes long episodes, having them collect one sword per episode (and kill a Maniwa shinobi) can make things difficult in terms of pacing.
Looking back, the early episodes where they gather a sword without any further significant plot development were pretty dull. The best ones were plot heavy, namely episode 7 and the last few episodes.
Because of that time frame, there was very little time to
...
build up hype. For instance, Enzaemon and Houhou's blades felt much more important than all others just because they first appeared a few episodes before their own. In comparison, the first blades felt insignificant. If not for their reappearance on the last episode, they would be completely forgotten. Same goes for the Maniwa heads. Some of them (of course, Houhou) like Pengin and Oshidori were memorable because we see them for a while. While most of them die in the episode of their first appearance.
Long story short, half of the blades, blade guardians, and shinobis were completely forgettable and added little to the plot, yet represent half of the show.
However, the second half of the show is when things get better and better as the characters that got built up time matter more. Plot wise, the show's second half is excellent, much better than the first half. And I have to say, I was happily surprised by the shows end. Given the first 11 episodes vibe, (7 as an exception) I expected a cheerful and happy end. Instead, what I got was an action packed, epic ending where fucks were no longer given.
Which is good, but I can't forgive 50% of the show being very mediocre plot wise.
7/10
Art:
The art may surprise some, but it is quick to adapt to. It fitted the anime's ambience and feel, and the fight scenes were good.
8/10
Sound:
Likewise, the sound is good and fitted the anime well. I liked some openings/endings.
8/10
Characters:
Considering there is some overlap, you get about 12 shinobis + close to 12 blade guardians as enemies. For most of these 20+ characters, there was simply no character development. And sadly, we did not get to see Sabi Hakuhei fight. And even for some characters that were more fleshed out, we got little explanation on their past. How are Enzaemon and Houhou truly related? Why/how did Shichika kill his father? I feel like they tried to develop many characters only to kill them in the same episode they show up, rendering their develop to be greatly superficial, while undermining screen time for more important characters. As result, we still have some big questions regarding the characters by the end of the show.
6/10
Enjoyment:
I did enjoy the show. My enjoyment for the show's second half was higher as the first half was mediocre. However, watching Katanagatari was not a particularly memorable experience.
7/10
Overall:
Katanagatari is a good anime. It does fall prey to its own premise of one blade per episode, but most of the time it worked out all alright. It's just that I think the plot and characters could be better handled.
7/10

Ah, the childhood memories. Yu Yu hakusho is an old school shounen, with interesting story and characters. But how good is it in today standards?
Story:
I think the pace and escalation in Yu Yu Hakusho are great for a shounen. Also, it touched some deeper subjects in regards to love and death. It was the kind of vibe I got when watching the first few episodes of Bleach. The characters get stronger in a good and believable manner. I would say the story is above average compared to other shounens. However, it was not particularly outstanding.
8/10
Art:
Unfortunately, early 90's animation simply does not age well. I
...
am sure that at the time the animation was considered great, but sadly it is not the case today. Normally, I would give the animation a 5, but, since Yu Yu Hakusho had great fights with multiple special effects, I have to reconsider and acknowledge the effort. It is natural that an anime with fights and special effects gets a higher rating for its animation than a dialogue centric anime with the same art quality.
6/10
Sound:
Sound was not top notch in the nineties yet, but it certainly suffers less from time than the visual aspect of the anime. I liked the music; the openings were great. However, it was never earth shattering, and the quality simply does not match today standards.
6/10
Characters:
I really liked the characters in Yu Yu Hakusho. Not only the main characters, but the main villains were excellent too. Yu Yu Hakusho achieved both deep characters and charismatic ones, which is rather rare. Most characters had their very specific charisma, each with intricate and interesting abilities (both heroes and villains), and likewise, each own had their backstory and personality explored and developed. Perhaps it's the nostalgia kicking in, but I think Yu Yu Hakusho had exceptionally good characters.
9/10
Enjoyment:
I really liked Yu Yu Hakusho. The characters and the story were great. The Dark Tournament saga is such a memorable one, and one of my all time favorites, the other ones not so much, but I still had a great time watching them.
8/10
Overall:
Yu Yu Hakusho is a great shounen, but unfortunately the art and sound did not age well. If it were to be remade in today's good standards of art and sound, it could have an 8 or 9 as the story and characters make it such an enjoyable show even with aged animation.
Nonetheless, I think anyone interested in long shounen type animes should definitely watch Yu Yu Hakusho.
A really tough decision when it comes to rating it. I'd say it's a 7.5, but without a decimal scale, it is either a 7 or 8. But since nostalgia might be a factor here, I'll be conservative.
7/10

Barakamon tells the story of a calligrapher in stagnation. After an... uneventful encounter with an art appraiser, he leaves Tokyo and goes to a small village in a remote island. There, he makes friendships and finds inspiration for his art.
The anime is cheerful and light. It is what you are looking for if you want quality non-violent, non-complicated, non-dramatic entertainment. Which is getting rarer to find nowadays, so it is a breath of fresh air. While the anime did achieve its goals very well, the genre makes it difficult for it to become THE legendary anime everyone is hyped about and will remember after watching.
Story
...
(this section might contain spoilers):
The initial premise of the anime is solid. I would say the anime kept with it well. Of course, there isn't much happening story wise. We get to follow the day to day little things that make the calligrapher evolve and mature as a person and artist. Not having much to tell in a story is ok as long as it allows for the anime to flow, which happens with Barakamon. However, it can not be considered something out of this world. In the end, it is a simple story, a good one, but still.
7/10
Art:
The art is spot on. It is the best I could hope for an anime of this kind. The style fits the story and characters well, making a great ambience overall. However, I can't give it a 10 because anime is first and foremost, animation. Other animes display a higher level of animation with intricate battles and special effects, which Barakamon can not display. Which is ok, it just means it is not the best animation if the anime industry.
8/10
Sound:
I liked both the opening and ending. The sound worked well with the art and achieved the chill and light ambience for the anime. However, it is nothing earth shattering either.
8/10
Characters:
Character development was the main focus of this anime. And overall, it did a good job. The evolution of the main character is well presented and credible. As such, the main goal of the anime is achieved. However, some secondary characters seemed pretty basic and unpolished to me, even after being there pretty much the whole time. But that's ok, after all, they are secondary characters. No characters seemed particularly charismatic/memorable to me.
7/10
Enjoyment:
Barakamon is one of these animes that make you wish you could just drop everything and enjoy life with energetic children around dragging you here and there. And because it made me wish so, I would say the anime was successful and made me enjoy the show. I liked it. But again, it is not something exceptional.
7/10
Overall:
Barakamon started with a good premise, and stayed loyal to it to the end. It has a very simplistic nature achieved with good art and music. Because of said simplicity, some characters remained perhaps unexplored. But perhaps this is one of the reasons why the anime has a simple, light feel to it.
Overall, Barakamon achieves its goal. That is, to be a happy and cheerful experience, but not something particularly memorable. It is a good anime.

Usagi drop tackles parenthood, and gives us plenty to discuss after.
Story:
The story was good. Of course, nothing really big happens because of the genre. Mainly, it allowed for the characters to develop well, and made the anime flow easily to the viewer.
7/10
Art:
I liked how before the opening the art was more childish to then transition to the actual art. The art itself is good, it really fits the anime's atmosphere.
8/10
...
Sound:
The sound was fine, like the art, it fitted the atmosphere. However, I was never particularly impressed by it.
7/10
Character:
This is where Usagi drop excels. The relationship between the two main characters is very well constructed and developed. Furthermore, even secondary characters had a good share of development, and all characters seemed credible.
8/10
Enjoyment:
The characters and plot allowed me to have a new insight on parenthood. And because of it, my enjoyment was good.
7/10
Overall:
While not being a fan of the genre, Usagi Drop still impressed me. I finished the anime thoughtful, feeling like I learned something, which is extremely rare. With that said, Usagi Drop remains as a breath of fresh air, but is by no means an anime masterpiece. I did enjoy the anime, and would recommend it to anyone pondering about parenthood as it provides valuable insight and different perspectives.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica is an interesting anime, and it surprised me. Nonetheless, it is by no means a masterpiece.
The story in this anime is extremely complex. Everything starts rather simply, but things got exponentially more complex as things went through.
-------Spoiler ahead:
The story was fine until it touched the laws of the universe and thermodynamics. The principle of harnessing the energy of a witch conversion to nullify the universe's entropy is way too far fetched.
The time travel aspect of this anime was good, but nothing exceptional. It certainly improved the story.
Furthermore, the concept of witches and grief seeds was not very good in my opinion.
...
For instance, familiars are spared so that they collect human energy, to become a witch, and only then be killed by a magic girl so that they can collect the grief seed and get the witches energy, which essentially is indirectly absorbing human energy.
So pointless. Why not make it so that magic girls, if they wish so, can directly kill humans to get stronger? I think evil magic girls could be explored more and replace witches.
Kyubey being evil, or perhaps simply neutral, was a plus to the story.
Because of these issues, and the over the top ending, I can not give this anime a high rating for the otherwise good story.
6/10
The artstyle was hit or miss. I particularly did not enjoy the way witches and their barriers were made. In general, the art was mediocre. It delivered its purpose, but just that.
5/10
I liked the music of the anime, and overall the sound quality and effects were good and fitted the anime well.
7/10
Character development was the main theme of this anime. The plot mainly served as a way to display the characters feelings, rather being the focus itself.
As such, we got to know all the characters deeply and know their personal struggles. That said, it became a bit repetitive, and in no way was it a masterpiece.
7/10
The plot was initially dull to me, but then, it got overtly complex trying to achieve depth. It got me going in conjunction with the characters, but it was not a particularly memorable experience to me. The enjoyment was mediocre.
5/10
Overall, the anime certainly pleased the fans of the genre. But to an outsider, it just provided a fair experience. The plot certainly is the most interesting aspect of the anime. I am sure some will think of it as a masterpiece. But to me, complexity is not necessarily quality, so this anime can not have masterpiece status to me.
6/10.

No game no life starts of with an excellent premise, two hardcore gamers sent into a gaming world, where everything is decided with games.
This anime could be excellent, but the poor character development and frequent fan service make it a less enjoyable experience.
The overall story progresses well, but it is in no way a masterpiece. The games were good.
7/10
Initially, the art annoyed me a bit, but it does fit the anime very well.
8/10
The sound of this anime reach its goal. It is not bad, by any means, nor is it something exceptional.
...
7/10
Characters are the low point of this anime. They are all very bland and uninteresting. I never felt like I cared to what happened to any of them. The anime lacks character development.
3/10
The games were enjoyable, and so was the initial premise of the anime. Sadly, the constant panty and boob shots get annoying really quickly. Combine it with poor characters, and my enjoyment goes down considerably.
My enjoyment was mediocre. It was not bad, but it was not something memorable either.
5/10
Overall, I am a bit dissapointed with No game No life. The premise and general plot are good, but the characters and fan services bring this anime down to me.
