Haikyuu!! is the starting point of my serve towards the court of sports anime. (Volleyball reference NAILED... or not.)
Being someone who plays volleyball myself, I instantly made a connection with the characters and the story of the anime.
Watching more of it, my passion towards volleyball boosted much higher, like Hinata's extraordinary jump as he spikes the ball.
Okay, I really need to stop making lame references and actually get into reviewing this terrific series.
1. Story [10/10]
...
Utterly, and completely. This was the first sports anime series that I have ever watched, but its story already impressed me since the first episode.
There is an element of reality in the story. I was really impressed with the knowledge it has. It really gave me a lot of volleyball skills which can easily be applied to real life games. (Although, of course, I'm nowhere near the characters' volleyball skills... oh well.)
It is a story of evolution, a story of improvement and pushing the characters to their highest points. The excitement is aptly sustained throughout the series (makes you go all "Gwahh!!" and "Aah!!!" when you finish watching an episode... please ignore my try-so-hard puns *you'll get it when you watch the series*).
There are unpredictable twists at times as well, making you ponder about it for a long time. At times, it will also make you stiffen as you stare at the screen with your jaw dropped, wondering what in the world just happened.
To sum it all up: you will be awed by the story. That's all.
2. Art [8/10]
Wow, the animation is impressive. It clearly illustrates the spikes, the jumps, the beautiful serves that (the cutie) Kageyama, as well as other (cuties) characters' skills. What I especially liked is that the art is very realistic - it makes you think that this is not just an anime series, but a real footage, of real people playing.
3. Sound [9/10]
SPYAIR gave this series the best opening ever, and the directors of this anime series chose the best opening ever. "Imagination" will boost your excitement to the highest - I really did jump up and down whenever the song played. The ending was cute as well - it was upbeat, but it still had a certain depth that waited to be explored. (YURERU KAGEROUUU--- okay, I should stop.)
Just a little spoiler for those who haven't watched this series yet... Haikyuu!! Second Season's opening will also be a song by SPYAIR. So WATCH. It. xD
4. Character [10/10]
Wow. Just... wow. Haikyuu!! definitely blew me away at this area. To be honest, I... kind of expected typical -dere stereotypes shoved into the characters, but no. The personalities are varied and extremely appealing. From the seemingly tough Kageyama to the ever-energetic Hinata, you can clearly see the different auras each character radiates.
Furthermore, the characters all go through the same journey together, but with different perceptions based on their characteristics. All of them, however, will make you smile as they slowly, but surely, step onto the porch of maturity and spread their wings wide on the sky of life... all sweating and laughing after the hard work they have gone through.
Anyway, did I mention that Kageyama is a cutie?
5. Enjoyment [9/10]
In my opinion, a truly enjoyable series is something that will make me watch all of it, not just out of the feeling of accomplishment. And Haikyuu really achieved this.
The humor, mingled with deep moral lessons, shaped me into who I am now. I laughed, I cried, I thought, all because of this series.
Even if it has a hundred seasons, I will watch it all... because I know, with every episode, it will change who I am right now.
Therefore,
It is a solid, sparkling 9/10.
(Anybody up for Haikyuu!! Second Season? I'm gnawing onto every single episode right now haha xD)

*might contain spoilers*
A child’s smile is brighter than any light in this world. Its warmth will leach into your heart and refuse to get out, glowing eternally in your soul.
It will hold you tightly and never, ever, ever let go.
This is what I have learnt from the – totally being subjective – best slice-of-life anime series.
“Barakamon” is a bittersweet (sweet with underlying tones of bitterness, I’d say in a dramatic manner) anime series surrounding Handa Seishuu, a young calligrapher, who ends up being exiled to an island for punching another famous calligrapher.
Getting out of the city and into the rural area, another
...
life dawns on him as he learns to embrace the simplicity of life by meeting Naru, a tomboyish young girl who has a peculiar love for bugs, Hiroshi, whose parents who might have been founders of Handa Seishuu no Fanclub, and other people who contributed subtly to the person he slowly develops into.
[Characters: 10/10]
One word to describe the character development: brilliant.
Since the first episode, we can clearly see that the creators of the series actually put effort into building multi-colored layers of personalities on the characters instead of just shoving them stereotypical -dere types.
If Handa is a seemingly stoic person, Naru is a naturally cheerful girl with a radiant smile, or Tama, an I’m-totally-not-a-fujoshi fujoshi and her best friend, Miwa, a boyish and cool big sister…
Furthermore, one thing that I particularly love about the anime series’ character development is that it allows us to slowly peel off the outward impression that the characters give to us and actually dig deeply into their genuine personalities – either Handa’s burning desire to find his identity, or Naru’s feelings of loneliness behind that smile…
The creators have successfully hit our hearts in that way, asserting how we should never judge a person just by the things they try to display and their true nature lies in things they try to hide.
Just by seeing how much Handa has changed since coming onto the island, we can all put on a smile and book our ticket there.
[Story: 9/10]
The story will make you literally fall off your chair because of too much laughter. Its jokes are relatable and hilarious – I bruised my forehead lots of times because of bashing my head against the desk from too much laughter, and so will you.
These light-hearted jokes are, in fact, one of the reasons I consider this the best slice-of-life anime series ever. The other, of course, is how it makes you cry without you realizing it.
Instead of blatantly jerking tears from her eyes like some other slice-of-life anime series, “Barakamon” has these undertones of touching elements, waiting to be explored. One of the episodes especially gives us an insightful look behind Naru’s plastered innocent grin – that carefully enclosed loneliness that she tries to pen inside her heart and show to no one.
Another fact that made me tear up is that the person who realizes it is Handa.
Handa, Handa, Handa. Such a seemingly hot-headed, brash, stoic character…
…and that moment when he mused “Maybe she is lonely after all”…
…I cried internally and stared speechlessly at the screen…
…just because of the sadness that sentence projected into my heart.
“Barakamon” is not a show purely for comedy. Sure, it has lots of it, but you can never disregard the depth of this series’ subtlety.
[Sound: 10/10]
The sound was, literally and figuratively, heaven to my ears.
The opening is light-hearted, just like Naru herself. Not only that, “Rashisa” by Super Beaver actually explores Handa’s character very skillfully as the song talks about being yourself – by far one of the wisest OP choices I have ever stumbled across.
The ending is a gentle song that elaborates the beautiful bond between Handa and Naru, and the appreciation he has towards her. “Innocence” by NoisyCell depicts just how tight she holds onto his hand, onto his mind, onto his heart and refuses to let go, determined to keep that mutual glow inside their hearts. A wondrous ED choice, I dare say.
Then, finally, something I am particularly pleased with is the OST of the anime series. “Toki no Nagare” by Kenji Kawai pulls heartstrings. Together with the context of the anime, it sends us across a passage of depths that the anime series subtly hints.
The voice actors are amazing. Daisuke Ono, of course, pulls his role off flawlessly as always - his voice is simply perfection. The anime series seems to have hired child voice actors as well, which makes the roles even more real… and I mean, you should definitely check out the “Barakamon” seiyuu video. Naru’s seiyuu is the perfect symbol of adorableness.
[Art: 9/10]
The art is painfully beautiful. Enough said.
[Enjoyment: 10/10]
Oh yes, I enjoyed it very, very, very much. This is one of the most memorable anime series that stayed in my mind for a long time since I finished watching it, and I will never forget the feelings it managed to make me display. Just… absolute masterpiece. Wow.
[Overall: 10/10]
This is the highest score I have ever given to an anime series. I love it and would recommend it to everyone around the world if I could.
It is literally, and I mean it, 12 episodes of beauty.
