This anime's about as messy as a landslide.
Alright, so I sat through each and every one of the 26 episodes of .Hack//Roots so I could conjure up a review. I forced myself to finish the series after the fourteenth episode only because I was already so far in and I'm someone who likes to get things done and when I criticize something I want a full understanding of what I'm going to bash.
The story wasn't "so" bad because it's got the base and foundation of the .Hack//Series. Which you all know by now because of the previous anime's and the synopsis above. What I had
...
a problem with is the way they had told it.
The main issue is that all of the characters behave unrealistically. And there's no character in this entire series who I could relate to. Which is VERY important to any show because you want someone to root for (pun intended) and build a relationship with.
Haseo didn't give two shits about anything or anyone and didn't even care much for the Twilight Brigade or anyone in it until Ovan ordered him to take good care of Shino, and abruptly they began a "relationship" after his sudden disappearance after the gathering of all the Virus Cores. Which is hard to identify because it happened so quickly. They get hitched supposedly, but it wasn't amplified properly since they only showed one scene that gave you the hint. I mean, yeah, they obviously felt something for each other but it seemed almost as platonic as her relationship with Ovan.
She kicks the bucket immediately after these shortly lived events and Haseo reacts strongly. Which is odd, because it didn't even seem like such a big deal when I sat and watched but Haseo's expression made me think otherwise. It just seemed so quick to actually feel anything for either of them. I just didn't care, which means there's something seriously wrong with this series.
There also isn't one central character. Sure, in the start they focus upon Haseo, but when shit hits the fan they switch to numerous different people. Tabby, Phyllo, and the supposed villains Pi and Yata who were Ender and Naobi previously but had their characters permanently disabled in the earlier episodes. Tawalaya who soon became Tohta. The two cat people and a bunch of others I didn't care much about.
When there's so many characters it's hard to keep up, and to feel anything for either of them. It's just an overall mess, an anomaly to story lines. It's probably one of the reasons why I didn't give a fuck about Haseo's "desperate" struggle towards insanity.
Tabby is as gutless as a guppy and doesn't think twice before she acts. She just does stupid things and is an idiot. Why she did some of the stuff in the series is beyond me. I don't mind very happy characters with not so strong intelligence outside of the "serious" bits, but yeah, she's stupid everywhere and in every situation.
The music was sub-par. Ali Project is a really good artist, but it didn't seem to fit well as an ending theme in my own personal opinion. Just seemed a little too wacky for something like this show. Yeah, it's dark, but it seemed more wacky Halloween than dark.
The opening of the opening's nice but everything following it is bitter and tasteless like lettuce. The animation's fine, I guess, but it didn't wow me. Anime openings are just a very recycled process. Run sideways, slash slash, stare up at the bright light above you with a solemn expression. How generic.
If you're a fan of .Hack I wouldn't watch this show, and if you're not I would try and forget it ever even existed.

To start things off with a negative, after watching .Hack//Sign, .Hack//Legend of the Twilight really fell short to expectations.
The story begins with two young teenage kids winning the opportunity to play as the two Legendary dot hackers Kite and BlackRose. Shugo the older brother playing the role as Kite and Rena playing the as Blackrose. Rena recruits her older brother to "The World" and they soon find themselves lured into various dangers throughout their online journey.
The story of .Hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet really felt dumbed down since its last series .Hack//Sign. It's strange to see the significant difference between the two shows since they
...
both take place in the same universe, but I digress. The first five episodes really are just there for gags and laughs with plenty of fan service to be had. Think it's due to the complaints of .Hack//Sign being too boring for most audiences. I mean, girls being pets, and sisters kissing brothers; heavens me.
Sometimes, it felt like too much. In later episodes the only dialogue you'd hear from Rena was "ONIIIII-CHAAAAN" and "ONIII-CHAAAAN" and all of the above. Which leads me to the characters of the show. This series lacks character development and you can see hardly any change from either from beginning to end. It was such a change from .Hack//Sign, the characters there actually showed substantial change through events.
The music isn't anything great. The opening's "alright" with its cheerful tune and upbeat lah-dee-dahs, but the actual shows OST's a tad bitter. The only real song I felt something for was the ED which had some beautiful lyrics. It's to be expected, since it was performed and written by See-Saw (The ones who did the OP and ED for .Hack//Sign.)
The animation's pretty good I suppose. It features more childlike looking characters rather than adult. Things are bright and lush with a pallet of different fruitful colors. It's just average, nothing to really report about it.
All in all .Hack//Legend of the Twilight's not a bad series; it's just not very good. If you'd like to follow the story of the previous titles then go ahead and watch, but if you don't I wouldn't see any reason to.

Before I get deep into things, I'd like to say that this show isn't for everyone, and if you're not willing to listen to prolonged dialogue this one isn't for you.
The show centers around a character under the name of Tsukasa who plays the role of a Wavemaster in the MMORPG labeled as "The World." He finds himself in a dungeon without any memories of who he is, or what he's done. During his journey he comes across many different friends and allies, along with some powerful enemies.
Alright, as for the story. I was always into the whole dark feel of the show. It really
...
wants you to understand that the people controlling the characters in-game also deal with their own personal problems outside of the internet. One of the most noteworthy in the series was one of the characters suffering from a handicap using The World as a way to overcome their inability to walk. Later in the series, characters try to build relationships with each other outside of the game.
My biggest beef with the story is that much of it is unexplained in the show, but delivered in the series of games. Lots of plot holes can be found within them and it leaves me a bit unsatisfied now that I 'need' to order the games just to know everything "The World" has to offer me.
The art was "alright." Some sequences where the show dealt with computer special effects were really slick, but the character animation was a bit chunky. The fight scenes usually involved the characters exchanging glances lecturing each other each exchange of blades. The scenery of the show were really nice on the eyes, allowing you to get in touch with the environments.
The music of this show is absolutely astounding. It's a mix of trance and Celtic music, really giving the feel for the show. My personal favorite is "Key of the Twilight" which really stands for the show entirely.
Overall, I thought this show was a treasure. The pace isn't for everyone, but to me it seemed perfect. The music, characters and story really made this one shine bright. There's a lot of mixed reviews out there, check it out yourself and make your own decision.
