**Spoiler free review/
Hyouka, a great work by the famous Kyoto Animation team. Convincing with a superb art style, an interesting setting with sophisticated and special subplots and great character development, this is a must watch for everyone who isn't scared by a different approach at psychological aspects in anime and generally likes calm slice of life shows.
The shows follows high school boy Oreki and what happens to him following his joining the Classics Club on request of his sister. While there is no major plotline or a goal, the various miniarcs take a focus on the relationships between the main characters and various mysteries that

appear throughout the show. While keeping faith to the classic SoL plot tropes, the show still manages to shed light on the lovely interactions of the characters, well done overall.
I already said it and I'll repeat it: this is a work by Kyoto Animation, which has done works like K-ON, Clannad and Free! in the past. The great art quality is also seen in hyouka, which surprises with extreme attention to details and a great animation style. I'd almost say that the art is perfect.
I sometimes had the feeling that they went a bit overboard with the voices. Especially as the series progresses, the voices more or less remain the same, which kind of disappoints me. I liked the first OP and the 2nd ED, fitting works for a slice of life show.
I already mentioned it, the characters are a big part of the show. We really get a good insight into the emotions and the thought process of Oreki and how he makes his conclusions. We also see many hints of romance, also seen between Satoshi and Mayaka. One big theme of Hyouka is growing up and what it means, especially to the people around you. The characters are confronted with a changed reality and a different perspective on life. Hyouka provides some great thinking material on this topic, really enjoyable.
I liked this anime a lot, especially it being a very different approach at slice of life shows. This coupled with the development going along with the story surprised me a lot in a positive way. The only critic I had is the complete lack of romance between the two main MC. You cant bring this many small hints of love and then leave the viewers disappointed. However, it doesnt ruin the show it would've just made it better. Just goes to show how much more emphasis the producers put into the story and the characters.
I suggest every lover of Slice of Life and overall calm shows who are open to something new and interesting to take a look at this show. Also it has a really good pacing and manages to keep the show interesting even after focusing so much on those seemingly increasingly uninteresting mysteries. Props to the producers, I loved this series.

Shinmai Maou no Testament - or the Testament of SIster New Devil is another one of this season's battle harems. With focus on powers, ecchi and girls, this is the typical classic harem, just better. Definitely recommended for everyone who likes a good story.
Story: 7/10
Surprisingly, this is one of the stronger parts of this show. While many harems tend to have a very brainless story, the plot is just secondary and mostly disappoints. While mainly used to animate boobs and censor unwanted body ares, I was pleasantly surprised by the art style. Especially the MC and his father had some badass looking scars and overall style. The enemys and monsters aswell were quite an improvement from certain other shows who decide to simply not animate those. Ecchi is all censored, but imagination is the best artstyle amirite?

With fitting male voices, good battle music and really good OP, this department also did their work. I didnt quite like the battle effects and the exaggerated moaning, it mostly felt unnecessary and out of place.
Character: 9/10
What? A harem gets 9 in character? Yes, its true. For the first time ever, we have a quite intelligent and not just plain dense MC who annoys the hell out of us, he actually takes the initiative and gets to town himself. THe girls of course are simpler, but more independant and powerful than what you'd actually expect.
Enjoyment: 10/10
Yes,I love harems. But this show has so many good things. We finally see some damn villain die, we see an MC that does dirty things with his harems and we get the feeling of a more natural approach to the whole ecchi theme. Of course, in the censored version we get to miss a lot of the interesting things - if you know what I mean - but as soon as the blu-ray is released this will turn to the better side.
Overall: 8/10
Honestly, a quite funny and well done show who's also suited for a non-harem lover. While this may not apply to everyone, I'd suggest waiting for the uncensored version - like with Highschool DXD, while its pointless, it somehow just makes it better.
The next season is gonna start in october, so I'd suggest everyone to have watched it until then - with an appearant high budget and big fandom, we can only expect that the second season is even better!

Absolute Duo, based on a decently received light novel series. It enters the competition of generic battle harems of spring 2015 - and clearly doesnt make the cut. The absolute unoriginality of the characters, the linear and terribly explained story and terrible pacing and conversations make watching all the twelve episodes a clear waste of time.
Story: 3/10
High school setting; Powerful MC who cant love with mysterious past; all types of girls that fall in love with him for dumb reasons; a linear antagonist who breaks from his shell and gets defeated by MC with nakama power. Uhm, where have I seen this before? Well, everywhere.

While the first few episodes definitely arent that bad and actually manage to make the usual harem tropes enjoyable, at latest after the 7th episode it gets just terrible. Even if the story and background sucked, we wouldn't know - there's barely even anything explained. I dont even know what the Absolute Duo is in the end...
Art: 8/10
Credit due where its due - the art style is good. While not as good as shows like Hyouka, it lives up to today's standards. Especially the animations of the rebel group and the AMAZING dance scene in the opening are worth being called good. Nothing special though.
Sound: 8/10
Same story as the art. Voices are well chosen - especially Tsukimi-sensei - and the background music is decent. I loved both OP and ED.
Character: 3/10
Normally I dont dislike the typical dere-characters, but this is going overboard. I havent hated, no, DESPISED a single character ever - until I met Miyabi. Listening to hear and seeing what she does made me cringe every single time and regret watching it. Julie had great potential but got smashed with her demon side. MC is decent, I've seen far worse.
Enjoyment: 5/10
I'm sure you'd expect a way lower rating here. Well, the first episodes definitely werent bad at all, noone could've predicted the following shitshow in the last episodes. Pointless conversations and repetitive subjects clearly destroy the positive aspects that were built up in the earlier part of the series.
Overall: 5/10
While not being completely terrible, if you pay a closer look and actually expected anything from the story, then this will be a waste of time. This show made everything wrong that could've been done wrong while writing the script and planning the plot. Dont watch this.
I hope that this doesnt get a second season and if it does, I hope it manages to develop a deeper plot and turn away from the extremely boring and even annoying characters.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, or My Teen romantic Comedy SNAFU, is one of the more popular series of 2013 Spring season. Even though the premise and setting - high school slice of life romance show - may not seem appealing to many, Oregairu does a lot of things very good, especially in being unique, good and refreshing.

Art: 9/10
Produced by Sentai Filmworks, the Art is just what you expect it to be. Its not generic and well done. You might argue that Hikky's face is very simple and seems to just have been ignored, but I think its simplicity just adds to his character, putting focus on his personality and especially his eyes. The girls are cute and well animated, I especially appreciate the effort in animating non important background characters.
Sound: 8/10
The voices are fitting, especially Hikkys. Damn I've never heard someone that realistically pissed and annoyed. While I found the OP just decent, I loved the ED - so awesome.
Character: 10/10
This is where this show shines. The other characters are just exactly what you would find in your everyday school and reflect their social status and personality extremely well. Hikky and Jukino however are extremely special in their refusal to join the norms of social interactions. Like stated multiple times throughout the show, their conversations feel strange to others and refreshing to themselves, hinting a romance that sadly doesnt come true (yet?). Their character type also appeals to everyone who feels a bit like a loner or someone who just doesnt have 1000 "friends" around him.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Combining special and unique niche characters with great comedy mixed with subtle hints at the flaws of society and the concept of friends, this series does everything right to entertain and motivate its viewer to think and reflect. The story is a bit generic but manages to bring out interesting twists and parts of the characters.
Overall: 9/10
A great show. A must watch for every lover of classic romcoms and comedy shows with high school settings. I've enjoyed every single episode, the execution is just too good. It shows why comedy can make or break a show centered around it, and in this case, it makes it awesome. I cant wait for the 2nd season airing soon!

**As this is the sequel to the first season of Code Geass, let me tell you that the review is for both seasons. I'd rate them the same and enjoyed them in a same way.

use it for a greater good, mostly his own ideals. Code Geass executes this idea masterfully, creating a series which stays in the memories of its viewers forever. Furthermore (minor spoilers) it discusses and puts light on the very real threats of a worldwide nuclear war, the usage if lies and dishonesty in modern politics and basics of today's politics and terrorism. An exceptionally superb show, this is a must-watch for every anime fan.
Story: 10/10
As I already said, the generic plotline of someone obtaining a superpower to then take on the world and turning it on its head is nothing new. Yet Code Geass manages to bring a psychologic discussion into this, putting up the enforcement of ideals of peace and equality against the unrightful push of said ideals on the nonwilling people and the nonchangeable flow of time and the world. The various character relations and well chosen cliffhangers and plot twists make for an awesome storyline who just cries to be binge-watched.
Art: 9/10
Being a relatively old anime from 2008 the show still has pretty good art that can definitely keep up with modern shows. The fight scenes are well animated, especially in the Knightmare one-on-ones. Sometimes I wish they'd have put more thought and detail into certain areas (C's World) but still pretty good overall.
Sound: 9/10
The background music was very fitting, just what you would expect. Underlining the tone of the series, especially the Nunnaly OST #25 was great. The first OP and ED were very good, while the 2nd ones felt a bit out of place.
Character: 10/10
Lelouch's character traits, psychological and mundane beliefs and ideals are what every person in their early teen years wants to be and follow (in a reasonable extent). The discussion of world peace, evil, discrimination and happiness is well portrayed in the different characters and encourages a own discussion and dispute about morals and politics. The show also takes a good mix of entertaining Slice of Life (school episodes) to then turn back to a more serious and bigger tone.
Enjoyment: 10/10
Controlling the world, the struggles and the fights for it: probably the most discussed theme in the head of every single person. What am I ready to give up in order to get what I want? Is whatever I am doing for a greater good right, put in perspective of a single eye? Code Geass shows these conflicts within Lelouch and the various characters, also illustrating the whole concept of honesty and lies, world politics and threats. Lelouch can be considered a genius: He more than once managed to predict the exact reactions of his counterparts to then react accordingly. His unique character mixed with the colorful and widespread themes and character types of the show makes an awesome and very enjoyable series.
Overall: 10/10
"In front of the greater picture, the tears of those who have lost their loves ones are the only thing that remains." Code Geass is awesome and excels in a lot of aspects. There isnt a single person who won't like this series, which is also reflected in the ratings. I suggest everyone to watch both seasons, atleast once.
I realize that this review might be a bit confusing, but I'm still done and over after finishing this series. It's awesome and I can see myself in a lot of Schneizels, Ohgis, Kallens and Lelouchs ideals, hence an objective view is very hard to give from my part! :D TL;DR: Watch it its awesome.

Barakamon isnt your generic anime. This show may be considered something simple, non special - but thats exactly what makes it awesome. There are no battles, no magic, no harems, no romance - this is pure Slice of Life, and its awesome.
Story: 9/10

Even for a relatively modern show, Barakamon's art style is more than impressive. Facial expressions and movements are done exquisitely, the calligraphy and some scenes are just perfect. Couldn't give anything else than a 10 here.
Sound: 9/10
The OP is very fitting, adds to the show's atmosphere. Non generic and something fresh, I've listened to the whole thing every episode. ED isnt as great but still good. Voices are very fitting and manage to show the difference of the islands accent and speaking style, even for a person who doesnt speak japanese. Background music is good too.
Character: 10/10
One of the key points where this shows excels. There isnt a single character who isn't unique and likeable. There arent the known dere-character styles, every single person is special and grows through the episodes, especially the MC. The comedy is also great and in synchro with the personalities.
Enjoyment: 9/10
This show is very calm and plain. It has great comedy and shows the becoming of a real adult and the struggles of hard workers. Every episodes feels fresh and brings something new, be it storywise, comedywise or characterwise. Very enjoyable. I personally wouldn't have minded if there were a bit more romance or another main female lead in the story, but the show's still fine as it is.
Overall: 9/10
A great show. If you mainly watch harems, shounens and action-SOL like, me this will be a great refreshment and change from all those. You will get unique comedy and very loveable characters packed into an interesting story. What do we want more?
I recommend watching the miniseries before every episodes, its really funny!

is probably one of the most successful animes and TV series overall, being so unique and controversial at the same time. Created and airing over 15 years ago, this series might be older than most people who watch it in 2015, the year this review was written. A lot of uncertainities and speculations exist about the production of this anime, and I highly recommend reading for example the wikipedia page to further understand why the show and story progressed how it progressed.
Story: 8/10
Mostentimes, a action show is made by the stories and characters. While NGE isnt too different from that, this aspect also makes it so good. The story seems very normal at first, but then begins to thicken and deepen, until a genius world development is finished which just baffles you. Halfway through the show, it decides that the story is now a minor part compared to the characters. This leads to a shift in focus: the story becomes a sideplot next to character development, and character development basically becomes the story. You get a great insight into the human mind, the struggles and worries of the characters who represent just about any normal person you could encounter nowadays. You won't be disappointed by the story, but make sure to pay attention: more than one concept is more complicated than you might think.
Art: 8/10
This is the hardest part to judge. The show is 18 years old, you can't expect it to be on par with todays great quality animes. Nonetheless I gave it an 8, because (contrary to my expectations), the low quality art wasnt a turnoff at all, moreso it even contributed to the atmosphere created while watching. Its generic, but good if you take into consideration the then available technology.
Sound: 10/10
While the ED was unfitting and not enjoable, the OP was definitely one big point of enjoyment for me. It creates and further underlines the whole atmosphere of the shows and adds a lot to the watching experience. Soundtrack and voices are perfect, the sound department of the show wasnt underfunded at all, thats for sure. Great job right there.
Character: 10/10
Some people might consider NGE confusing, others would even call it a mindfuck. This isnt untrue, but its right just for the last few episodes. AS I already mentioned, the focus shifted mid-series from the story to the single characters and deeply explains and tries to show their emotions, struggles and thoughts. The protagonists, Shinji, mind is basically opened to the watcher in a explosion of appealing tropes and themes combined with a, lets call it "special" art. Most viewers- me included- probably found the ending and the psychological parts extremely confusing, and I recommened everyone to watch "The End of Evangelion" if they are not satisfied with the ending. But if you're ready to think and read a bit about the psychological context surrounding the characters, I assure that you won't be disappointed. You might even understand it on the fly and so get a great insight into human minds, daily struggles and the subject of instrumantality.
ENjoyment: 8/10
WHile the anime, in retrospective, was very good, there are a whole bunch of bother points to me. The art, of course, just feels sloppy after watching a modern show (but that doesnt really count, lets be honest). However the low-quality second part of the series and the partly extremely disappointing ending of the series leaves a lot of plotholes and might be considered a major turnoff. If you didn't pay full attention, youre just left confused at the end and quickly lose yourself in the various aspects of the show. So in short, while the series is great as it is, I highly doubt that it couldn''t have been even better. But then again, thats what makes NGE so good and unique and I wouldn't want to change it in any way.
Overall: 9/10
Probably the most inspiring and effectful anime of all time, this is a must watch for everyone who ever said "I watch anime". So many things and emotions you can derive from this anime can be precious and interesting to engulf in, and I highly recommend everyone to do that. This isnt a series to read reviews about, so that you're in the clear whether to watch it or not- you just have to watch it.
When youre done with the series, consider watching the reboots and definitely watch the movies. It will satisfy your need for more if thats what you want, after finishing the series.

**I have only seen the anime of Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate and this review is only based on that.
Romance comedys with high school settings are by far my favorite anime series, so keep that in mind.

Story: 9/10
If you have already read the synopsis, you know that the story is something fresh and new. Running for student council president normally is not part of the ideal Anime MC character, so it's interesting to see something new. Apart from this main plot a big part of the series is also the romances and relationships around the male MC, to an extent that sometimes almost make it seem like youre watching a harem series, but these are minor appearances. It is almost impossible to analyze the story without spoilering it all, but in the end, it fades out to have been a very complex storyline with important and diverse subplots, which make the biggest of the good part of the series. I would have given a 10 if it werent for some unnecessary exaggerations, but its still good. You will never be annoyed or not pleasantly surprised.
Art: 8/10
The art is nothing special, but good nonetheless. Sentai Filmworks is a good studio and clearly lives up to the expectations. Sadly, I only gave an 8 because of often very unnecessary and out of place fanservice, which mostly just ruined the scene. Nothing to complain about the art though, the girls are diverse and beautiful, animation is well done.
Sound: 10/10
The OP isnt generic but still awesome. ED is extremely fitting to the vibe that the episodes emit, well chosen. ANd the background music is just perfect. I have seen few anime whose background sound was just so perfect, especially when there are so many different styles to chose music from, since the story subplots are so different. The voices are mostly very good.
Character: 10/10
This anime does not at all have your generic dere-character types. Most characters appear to have so in the beginning though, but then receive decent to great parts of character development which explains their diverse and unique characters to the viewer. The way they act appears very realistic and understandable because of their characters. The life crisis and psychologial problems of the single persons are also well executed. It creates a remaining bond to the viewer which makes this show so good.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Coupled with an complex and intriguing story, excellent character portrayal and well executed comedy scenes here and there makes this show extremely enjoyable. After overcoming my post anime depression of binge-finishing this series yesterday I still think its awesome and heavily underrated. Everyone who watches this will be pleased by the diverse storyline and the appealing circumstances. Its worth watching this, believe me.
Overall: 9/10
If it werent for the sometimes out of place scenes - as mentioned before - I would have given this show a 10. It also is while realistic in some aspects, extremely unrealistic in some others. The displayal of childhood love, post-traumatic problems, teamwork and even touching important aspects of modern definition of democratic state systems, the show makes a staying impact on the viewer. This all coupled with good comedy really made this show for me.
Forecast: There wont be a second season, since the story is more or less finished. There were some OVA's that add a lot to the romance and battling over Oujima's love, plus a whole bunch of fanservice - if youre a fan of that, go ahead and watch them.

So as a person who rarely watches Shoujo anime this was a first for me, so keep that in mind.

around a small group of teenagers. Mostentimes, these kind of animes are made by the nuances, the art and the soundtrack since the story is mostly very linear, predictable or repetitive. This is partly the case here aswell.
Story: 7/10
Like I already mentioned, the storyline of this type of anime are very linear and predictable, and this is also the case here. It could honestly be worse, but I wouldn't call it an extremely sophisticated and good story. But it surely isnt bad. It revolves around the classical trope of re-meeting a past lover in your 2nd life/later life, and this is also the case here. Futaba meets Kou again after they spent a term in middle school together and fell in love. However, both of them changed, but the feelings obviously remain. The anime does a good job in focusing around their relationship and its development as they get to know each other and learn what happened in the time they missed. Sadly some interesting side characters are a bit left out in the story development - Murao, Kominato - but its only natural for the plotline.
Art: 10/10
I dont know too much about the producing studios so I cant tell much about their reputation/part in the production of the art, but it sure is good. In the beginning, I thought some parts of it were strange, but in the end I was fully captured by the beautiful color selection and the well-animated motion scenes. I gave it a 10 because it felt like the art was very much perfect for the vibe the story had created. You will not be disappointed by the art thats for sure.
Sound: 8/10
I'm not a particular fan of the japanese music nor of anime music, so normally I dont give particularly good ratings for the sound. However the OP and ED were both very fitting and enjoyable, and the music choice in the series also just perfect for the situation. Funny fast music for comedic sccenes, slow and monotone for dialogues and thinking and enjoyable and vivid for love and happiness scenes.
Character: 8/10
While I think the characters are all extremely realistic and well-portrayed, the predictability and the underdevelopment of very interesting characters steals quite some points here. Others may disagree, but oftentimes a shift of focus onto the supporting characters, especially in the later part of the series, would have helped a lot to show the progression of the group of friends. But the two main characters are explained and focused very deeply which adds more spice and sense to the storyline, which is a really good thing (uff phrasing).
Enjoyment: 9/10
I personally would call this an "anime oozing with love, cuteness and understanding" but that wouldnt exactly be true. However, its the part which made the series so good for me: just a lot of romance coupled with the problems of everyday life and battling with depression. The mutual help the two mains give each other to overcome their problems is portrayed in such a good and convincing way, the romance was just bound to come. It all felt very realistic and the extremely good portrayal of such deserved to get a 9/10.

Depening on your personal feelings and attitudes, you will enjoy this anime or enjoy it a lot - its open to you. I would suggest everyone who likes romance and school SoL animes to watch this show, its really good.
Forecast: I won't read the manga, but what I heard and read about it it seems to be really good and clearly adds a deeper thought and process to the relationship between Kou and Futaba. To my knowledge it has already ended or atleast it will this spring, but I'm not entirely sure. Also I predict that this anime will get a 2nd season - the ending of the first clearly leaves a lot of room for story improvement.
