Hey

Hm, hard to say. .Hack is like an evolving series over a world which constantly changes. Thus, the first series are like an introduction to the world and general gameplay, then the others are more character based in a later time-line on online gaming issues and other interactions.

For anime, I think the first one is the best, .Hack//Sign. The characters are quite interesting and the constant on-line/off-line comparisons provide a nice background.

Without spoiling anything too much, its about a character who cannot recall anything much about his real life, but is unable to log out from the game. Through meeting other player characters who want to find out about the situation, the main character slowly starts to look into themselves to see who they are, what they want, instead of just the overwhelming apathy that they initially had. While all this is going on, the sys admins and other 'influential' characters are trying from the code and rule-side to get rid of the main character, as well find out the identity of the main character.

Just a rough synopsis on what it is like. .Hack//GU the movie is pretty good as well, very high graphics and its basically the 3 ps2 games in a few hrs.

For the books, I go with .hack//AI Buster. But thats mainly because it provides a lot more detail and depth into the World (name of the online game). Its a series of side-story's which basically add more dimensions to existing characters as well as more info and plot on how the World came about, and the events which pre-ceded .hack//Sign.

Edit: If you're just getting into .Hack or want to get a small look into it without all the hassle of stuff before, try out .Hack//Link.

Its a new manga series but is interesting in a way. Don't expect too much philosophical stuff or deep emotions yet, but I think its a light-hearted look at the latest incarnation of .Hack.

Hey welcome to the club!

I don't think I've ever met a .hack fan before. Which series is the best?
It’s time to ditch the text file.
