Okay, I wasn't a "fan", but I was the one you are thinking of, because I didn't remember it that well except for "magical lesbians" and had trouble seeing how that could not be at least a little bit awesome. And then I tried to rewatch it. And only got through the first episode. So yeah.

Wow, you're actually the first person I meet who likes the ending... so much. I personally felt like I was being mindfucked for 4 hours(I was going back and back on the episodes, because I was falling asleep at 02:30 AM) and my first opinion was that the ending was... bad. After I spent some time thinking it over and over, I came to the decision that it has a meaning behind itself. But still it didn't made much sense no matter how much time in thinking. Yeah, it definitely brought me so much headache - beginning with 06:30 in the morning(when I finally finished it) and... well my head still hurts if I try to think on it too much :0 But actually there is reason for it I think... I mean there is End of Evangelion... I don't think that the story can actually be finished without EoE. I mean - yes, you get some ideology in ep 25 and 26 but then again - did you get any progress on the story? I don't think so. I know that the director was short on money back then, and I think that he didn't make the end of the story at that moment intentionally - I mean he'd only ruin it(well that's my viewpoint).
Mind my opinion only if you feel like it - after all, at first I didn't like Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica's ending either - I needed two hours of thinking to find that it's actually great.
But still when I look back at episode 26... it had one great part - the one in the alternate reality, where Shinji and Asuka were going together to school. ♥ It was so lovely ♥♥
