Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

Bad pun not intended, one could call Darker Than Black a "Darker and Edgier" version of Black Cat. They have very similar components and characters (organization of assassins/supernatural killers of which the main character is a part of, and each have different powers; mysterious waif emotionless girls; hero getting tangled up with figures from his past along the way, etc etc) but DTB does things with much more drama and blood. Also, the atmosphere of both just seem similiar as well. +voice casts are ridiculously similar and soundtracks are reminiscent of each other

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

*Seemingly* ordinary guy + supernaturally-based girl (both named Yuuko, coincidentally) -> she drags him on escapades. Often against his will. Though there's some awfully fishy circumstances surrounding the girl and her life. +More unnerving horror elements galore~

Kenja wa Nemuru: Shinjou Mimei no Houseki Jikenbo

Innocent person plagued by bad luck -> runs into a more experienced "magic" user, "Help me at my shop and I'll help you with your problems." +Both contain rather unnerving horror elements

Short stories featuring (an) animal(s) as the main character(s) -> may seem silly or light-hearted at first, but both manage to convey a somewhat sad message.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
add

What's noticeable: Snarky, sometimes aloof heroine -> keeps dragging the male protagonist into her escapades, whether he wants to go or not Both involve the two protagonists getting involved in the supernatural happenings around them (not to say the heroine isn't "supernatural" herself), and slowly but surely adding to their little "circle" of acquaintances. Despite the reoccurring comedy, both have very dark overarching themes, in Tasogare, the circumstances of Yuuko's untimely death, and in PR, the bloody fights for the throne between the siblings. In that, both are mostly episodic, but with small clues to said overarching themes being dropped in every chapter. Overall, it's kind of hard to describe it, but I have a feeling if you love one, you'll love the other.

Weird ancient power a woman can only wield -> protagonist (voiced by Noto Mamiko in sub) constantly hunted down by a creepyass dude who wants her power (or her *for* her power) -> seems there are others like her; some psycho, some helpful. Oh, and boobs & LesYay galore.

"Oh hay let's fight violently. With tons of high-pressure blood." "But don't worry, we're immortal, so we'll revive even after the most insane torture sequences." +Baccano's nonlinear storyline ends up fitting together at the end ~ Mnemosyne's storyline goes in order, but there are huge jumps in time from episode to episode, with little clues unraveling the mysteries of the series that also all fit together at the end.

When one watches Gokujou Seitokai, one might be reminded of Mai-HiME minus the magical girls. Mainly because of the Absurdly Powerful Student Council overarching theme (and that Kanade may remind you of Mashiro), but the undertones of "let's all be friends and not kill/fight with each other."

The obvious: 90's era, similar feeling of the art -> somewhat depressing story that progressively Gets Worse as it goes on -> Bad Futures/humanity is half gone -> there clearly are no therapists left for these messed up characters. +mecha? Well, NT, HT has robots but I don't know if they'd count as mecha -> +epic mood whiplash from the in-series nightmare fuel in the form of "Fly Me To the Moon" and "Lullaby..."

Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e

MacGuffin Girl, or maybe its just a girl wearing a MacGuffin -> said MacGuffin holds great powers a Bad Future is trying to get a hold of -> male friend trying to save her from said organization. Time traveling + wars tearing countries/futures apart. Although Noein is a lot more "positive" than NT, HT.

Baccano!
add

While Baccano is more lighthearted, and Red Garden has more drama: They give a similar sort of feel (YMMV). Maybe it could be called rather artsy? (If you could call Baccano artsy at all). The rather deceptive mood that yo-yos back and forth between a lighthearted piece (for that: Baccano has the comedy, Red Garden has the slice-of-life) and a dark and melancholy blood fest...Though Baccano can sometimes managed both at the same time. +both have NYC as a major setting/Guns & Roses heavily reminds me of Jolly Jolly/both have smiliar-sounding jazz-styled BGM Oh, and thar be lots of "Hey I'm back from the dead."

The overall plot of "Please solve the case. Figure out which one of these characters is not-so-innocent, and quick, before everyone in this building dies horribly." Although it's worth noting that Umineko also has the "fantasy/these murders were committed by means of magic" perspective, and Doubt is a more run-of-the-mill case.

WELL, it is obviously going to take some explaining on my part for this: Genre-defyers. Does that make much sense? AzuDai: When you hear "school life", or "slice of life", what do you think? Boring, typical old shoujo-y episodes of girls fawning over boys that never notice them and "schooltime antics" ensuing? Well, if you've ever seen AzuDai, you will know it stretches the "schoolife"/"slice of life" definitions to a breaking point, most with types of humour ranging from dark humour to outright crack. Simply put it is very unique. Soul Eater: YEAH, IT'S A SHOUNEN. But not with overly long story arcs, characters constanlty trying to overpower each other battle after battle...and a "will to fight" (insanity) that for once, is not overused. Again, I stress unique-ness. Therefore, I make this reccomendation not for similar storylines or characters, but for those out there who have either enjoyed AzuDai or Soul Eater and again, wants something that hasn't been done twenty times over.

Elfen Lied

A girl is found -> she is taken home -> she is innocent, childlike, and she cannot speak but one syllable (so she is named) -> she is found to be unique of her kind, and seems to have a darker "version of herself" lurking somewhere deep in her subconscious. (Note though, that Chobits does not delve into the level of gore Elfen Lied does, and Elfen Lied, though it does contain nudity, does not focus primarily on ecchi as comic relief like Chobits.)
