A perfect show that loses some points because of its length. It really starts to dwell on the same emotional beats and it starts to get stale.

Near the end I was making myself laugh because it felt like family guy but for melancholy instead of funny.
stark: "wow frieren you put a lot of ketchup on your fries"
frieren: flashback to lunch with the gang
eisen: "wow himmel you put a lot of ketchup on your fries"
himmel: "whats life without a little sauce y'know"
frieren: end flashback

Paripi Koumei (Anime) add
I really loved when this show leaned into its overarching plot or its silly premise, but it did unfortunately little of both. Instead it spent a lot of time on character-based plot for characters that felt very flat.

While each character has a generally unique personality, they don't really interact with each other. Eiko is expressive, outgoing and a little silly, but nobody ever reacts to her. She'll emote and quip with no reactions from anybody.

Kongming is stoic with a carefree & goofy side, but people only comment on 1) him being clever and 2) him wearing strange clothes. His close friends never actually ask about ...

Mixed Feelings
I would not recommend this anime unless you're already familiar with the card game. They don't explain the rules of the game in this show so I expect it would be fairly confusing for a newcomer.

Going into this I had pretty low expectations but I was very surprised! The quality of writing, animation, pacing and music was pretty good, and I ended up really enjoying the show.

The characters are realistic - kids act like kids and adults act like adults. It's a nice breath of fresh air after years of typical, tropey middle schoolers being more mature than adults. And there's actual, real, character growth! ...

Preliminary (5/13 eps)
the fact that this is rated anything over a 5/10 shows that you can't trust ratings and that the vast majority of people have shit taste. Funimation has 20k reviews for Arifureta and it clocks in at a 5 of 5 star rating. Meanwhile, the entire fifth episode is dedicated to some hydra fight, and the monster is done entirely in super shitty CGI. The character designs outside of the two important characters are all super samey, at least by the time that I dropped the show.

The manga was fine, maybe a little too isekai-harem tropey. This show doesn't try to develop any of the ...

Mixed Feelings
This show really caught me off guard. While most of the characters were annoying to start, they ended up being impactful and meaningful. It started off as a comedy, but introduced some drama elements by the end that made me care about the show.

This show also accomplished something that I'd never seen before: they gave adequate challenges to an OP MC! They scaled the stakes up very well. Additionally, I think the MC here does the 'silent brooding' archetype but it doesn't feel as idiotic as a lot of other characters. Seriously: for a character who's supposed to embody a trope, he was very ...
