I lived in Japan for about six years; one as a junior at Kansai Gaidai, three as a high school assistant English teacher on the JET Program in Osaka-fu, one as an elementary school assistant English teacher on the JET Program in Niigata-ken and my last year as a teacher at an English juku in Chiba-ken. (You could ostensibly also count the year I worked at the Japanese Embassy in Washington DC since I was technically on Japanese soil every workday but let's not cut hairs. ^_~)
I founded what may have been the first all female anime club, Women Who Appreciate Anime. I sped through anime, the Japanese music scene and then the Japanese fashion scene -- all with an intensity that was destined to flare brightly and then gutter out.
Like all good things though, it's coming around again.
When I am not racking my brain trying to remember just what manga I was reading in Nakayoshi back in 2001, I also indulge my affection for the Heian Era of Japanese history. I studied tea ceremony and ikebana for several years and also love studying herbalism, the language of flowers and how to be supremely snobby about all kinds of tea. I am enamored with Regency, Victorian and Edwardian history and fashion (not so keen on the empire waistline though). My interests no doubt reflect my wish for more grace and refinement than is often found in our modern world. I love times and things that are elegant, formalized, and, let’s face it, highly romanticized.
