Imo you should atleast watch My Conquest is the sea of Stars(prequel to the main OVA). The second movie is just a well made remake of the first 4(i think?) episodes of the main OVA.
Honestly there is no reason to skip them :p

Just saying, this anime is really old... if you don't like the old anime "graphics" you will have a hard time getting into it. Also, this anime is clearly not for everyone, but those who get into it love it and regard it as one of the best animes of all time (like me). You haven't watched shows like Death Note or Code Geass so it's kinda hard to know if you will enjoy it or not because those 2 clearly draw alot of ideas from LoTGH although they were made to appeal to the modern anime masses so they're kinda shit when compared to LoTGH but still good on their own.

I can only say that the show keeps getting better and better and that you will probably be confused at first with all the new names and characters but don't falter you will pick on them quick enough!

Btw what's up with card captor sakura ^^? Is that anime worth a watch?
