Nadesico is an amazing gem that is often overlooked because of its mix of genres. While it has mechs, it's not necessarily a mech show. While it's sci fi, it doesn't officially focus on the universe.
I frame it like this: Nadesico is the show to get people into anime if they can't get into Gundam or Evangelion. The characters are the focus of the show, with even the ship itself having a personality through it's AI, Omoikane. Trigun is an absolute classic that everyone who watches anime MUST watch. While from the outset it might look like every episode is going to be a 'bad guy of the week' type anime, the overarching story was quite compelling. The showdowns and solutions to each problem that the good guys come across intrigues one to watch further, and the characters never break from their characters. The comedy comes from the clashing personalities, not from fourth wall breaking, and the drama comes from the same place.
