"This cost...how much? And it looks like that?!"
--Kunihiko Ikuhara on Powerpuff Girls
Notice: Five items is too few for "favorites". Ten items would still be too few. If it's rated 10 or 9, then it's in all likelihood a favorite. The actual list reflects whatever it is I'm actively thinking about and enjoying at the moment.
THE BY-NOW MANDATORY SCORING EXPLANATION
Ratings of 1-10 are assigned not so much as a measure of objective quality; they are also not possibly assigned as a measure of subjective enjoyment. Rather, 1-10 is a measure of how little I care about how imperfect a series is. I find this to be an extremely useful scoring mechanism.

Series That I Like For Honestly Good Reasons (Really, I Mean It!):
Are there omissions to this list? Most likely, especially series that haven't finished airing yet, or series that I can't quite figure out a category for without making a category exclusively for them, or overlooked, or whatever. The previous comment of "If it's a 9 or 10, it's most likely a favorite" still stands, so refer to the list if need be.
Yes, I know this is a lot of "favorites"; I find the concept of "favorite" extremely hard to define as, for me, it's highly dependent on mood, recent events, or just what I'm thinking about. If you want lots of fun, ask me what my favorite series is, and then sit back and watch the mental fireworks as I try to wrap my mind around the concept of a single favorite series.. Some of these I might be able to gush more ebulliently with praise than others; this lack of effervescence does not preclude my positive thoughts towards the series.
In conclusion: I have watched entirely too much anime.
MISCELLANY
A deep indebtedness is owed to Gofu, whoever he may be, for proving that good pencil (colored and non) anime fanart is not dead.
hello i have a request. could you tell me where are you watching Dirty pair online? i mean on which site ( you watch online not download?) 'cause i only found with low quality what is pretty lame ;p
I knoooow. ;~; That episode lanced through me too. The sadness of it all hit me about an hour after I watched it, and I started to tear up. I was applying it to my life in a "what if" sorta way, thinking how I'd feel if I lost the closest person to me all of the sudden....which is bound to happen one day..and I really started feeling for Yuuki's sister.
First of all, I'm surprised that this series had the guts to even do that. I expected a happy ending where they both found their parents in the end. So this sudden plot twist took me for a spin. When the girl had her dream about it, then woke up.. I was like "Yeah hahaha..no way they'd do that to Yuuki.." Then it really happened. @_@
What a cliffhanger for episode 9... I wonder what Yuuki was going to say.. I have a couple speculations. XD
And good luck with your online classes! Those are tougher for me to do because I slack off like way more.. XD
Speaking of the Umineko VN, I'm really interested in getting that. Lol, it's been kinda interesting to hear what VN readers have to say while the anime goes on. I read Psgel's blog called Starcrossed, and in the comments under his Umineko episode reviews, VN readers pop up and flaunt about their superior knowledge, and sometimes spoil stuff. There's been a bit of fire between the VN readers and the anime-only watchers. But VN readers make me want to play the game even more. T_T Same thing for Higurashi, but I only got to play a demo for the beginning of the game.
Oh cool, you're in grad school? Good luck! I still have another year before I get my BS degree. It's been busy already and classes just started for me a week ago. XD
I agree about Rose of Versailles. I checked out Onii-sama e some time ago and gave it a 6/10. Kind wavered between a 6 and 7 really. I thought it was decent, but of course, it didn't give off the same epic (OMG I LUV THIS) feeling. XD Kinda rarely happens to me. =.= But there were certain things that kinda bugged me..especially with what happened to the Oscar-look-alike in the end. I can't remember her name at the moment, but I should since it was repeated so many times. XD
My top 5 favorites list feels so..permanent right now. XD Last Exile has been there since 2004. Higurashi has been there since 2006. All the others were recently added since last year, and they feel so...right, lol. If my top 5 is going to change someday, I can't wait to see the next anime that will blow me away like that. @_@
I think Last Exile is somewhat the weakest link on my list right now because I don't have the same feelings for it as I did 5 years ago. It just marked one of my golden moments in anime when I first ventured beyond Cartoon Network, and saw something completey unlike anything I had seen before. It's just hanging in there for that reason.
And I really need to continue watching Utena... I started it a long time ago, but I need to take some backward steps because I forgot a few details. ><
**Edit: When you finish Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 episode 8, please tell me what you think. =O
I hope I don't have terrible taste, and you're right to detect self-deprecation. I suppose I do try to avoid claiming to have good taste because every now and then someone will recommend a title that's what we would conventionally call 'artistic', like, I dunno, Glassy Ocean, to me on (I assume) the grounds that I both use polysyllablics and enjoy anime. I find it useful to throw in the odd reminder that I'm mostly here for the robots and shouting.
In truth 'taste', with its echoes of œnology, feels like too dispassionate a word to mention in the same breath as weeping. Only normal people and critics writing in the most experimental journals seem to admit to doing it.
of course you've heard it! It's in a LoGH gaiden episode (no idea which one, but it's on youtube) where Kircheis and Von Schenkopp are battle axing each other. Kircheis is like "zomg he's sooo good!" and Walter is like "youngin'", then Kircheis is like "there's no way to attack him! suki ga nai!"
The other time I know of is in Gunbuster, probably ep 3 or so, when Jung is having that unofficial match with Kazumi. Kazumi gets all nipponjin badass on her with that omnidirectional stance, and Jung is like "zomg it's soo Japanese...suki ga nai!"
Ah, well, I'm not well-up on my Nietzsche (or Buddhism either, and I don't have much of an excuse there, as my landlady's a Buddhist). Provided I manage to avoid leaving higher education, I shall probably have to read some of his work one day but until then I'm content to admire his moustache. I'm not particularly fond of moustaches, but if you're going to grow one you might as well aim for the full-blown walrus effect.
