Just wanted to let you know how much I loved reading your interpretation of VK's love triangle/ending (a little late)! It made me tear up a bit, as the ending was very bittersweet. I JUST recently read the extra chapters, it was the closure I needed. I keep hoping they release a third season to watch the ending come to life.
Actually Yuuki is returning to Zero's grave many years after his death to leave the broken Bloody Rose for him.
In Chapter 93 she does have a dream of Kaname most definitely as a human and holding his own child/having his own family. And yes he loves her but I wouldn't say he "left" her to an eternity of misery and loneliness as written canonically Yuuki clearly stated "Zero gave me many years of happiness." And "never" loved Zero? Are you certain we're on the same page? Cuz correct me if I'm wrong and agreeing with Imaginary Lights on her direct quote on why Yuuki was oblivious to Zero's love for her:
" Remember, Zero had tried so hard to push Yuuki away when he realized his fate as a level E vampire. Yuuki had to constantly fight just to stay by his side, and even then she always thought she was bothersome and that Zero just tolerated her being there.
The thing about Zero and Yuuki is that they are constantly trying to uncover the depths of their importance to not only themselves but each other. Their relationship took time because neither of them knew how the other one felt, and they both questioned their feelings for the other.
For Yuuki this is echoed in Zero’s question;
"What am I to you, Yuuki?"
And Yuuki’s uncertainty was in her response;
"What is Zero to me?"
The whole point of Zero’s hesitation and Yuuki’s uncertainty is to highlight Hino’s love theme of ‘if you want to hurry, go slow.’
Zeki underwent many different stages in their relationships, and unlike Yume had many reasons as to why they shouldn’t work.
When introduced, Zero was a level E vampire with a limited life span and Yuuki was a human. The very act of saving Zero by baiting him with her blood is considered a sin. Zero, believing his life is limited, pushes Yuuki away to protect her. In response, Yuuki fights tooth and nail to keep him alive.
The reason Yuuki is so hesitant to believe that Zero cares for her is because she is used to Zero pushing her away and hiding his feelings. The almost kiss really affected her. We know this because she reminiscences about it during the vampire party.
Thinking about the almost kiss and how out of character it was for Zero, left her finally concluding that he’d had a bad dream and that the action was meaningless because he was ‘acting strangely’. So she pushes the thought away, and pretends it never happened.
It is Zero who realizes how he feels for Yuuki first because his thirst for her blood gives him away. As we know a vampires thirst can only be quenched by the one you love.
As you point out, Yuuki continues to stay oblivious to his feelings, believing he’s not interested and also because she’s focused on her infatuation with Kaname. She knows Zero is important to her, but she hasn’t realized the depths of importance. She’s convinced he doesn’t care about her in that way.
But then suddenly everything changes. Zero reconnects with his roots as a hunter and Yuuki uncovers her heritage as a vampire. Suddenly everything is thrown out of order.
Yuuki undergoes a sudden transition into a pureblood. She is completely overwhelmed with memories from her past and in the following mess of emotions, memories and guilt believes Kaname is the one she belongs with.
As such Zero finally admits how he feels and illuminating Yuuki on the situation pushes her away once again and both of them conceal their fragile hearts.
It isn’t until early in the second arc that Yuuki realizes she can’t be sated by Kaname because of her love for Zero.
The second arc focuses on the conflicted feelings of the two. Not only is Yuuki confused about how she feels for Zero; Zero is also confused about how he feels for Yuuki.
Yuuki thought that Kaname was the only man for her, then suddenly she’s craving Zero’s blood and losing herself in his nostalgic sense. She’s conflicted and unsure about the depth of these emotions.
Then suddenly she can no longer contain her thirst and she drinks his blood and finds herself sated entirely. Now she’s forced to re ask the question in the first arc ‘what is Zero to me?’
Similarly the second arc finds Zero questioning his feelings for Yuuki. He receives information from Sara and uncovers that Kaname orchestrated everything from the shadows. Naturally he starts doubting whether his feelings for Yuuki were manipulated or not.
Ironically, it is Yuuki this time who is the first to realize that she loves Zero and that her feelings for him are real. After she kisses him she finally realizes what Zero means to her and answers her question ‘What is Zero to me’;
'The boy I want to cherish.'
'I love him.'
'This feeling is real.'
In retaliation she admits to Zero how she feels about Zero before stealing Zero’s memories in order to protect him and thus push him away the same way Zero pushed Yuuki away in the first arc to ‘walk the same path as Kaname’.
Zero is forced into a new life where he realises that despite everything, he’d always be attracted to Yuuki.
In the end their story really is tragically beautiful. So I guess I understand Yuuki’s obliviousness, and I think that’s why that scene is my favourite Zeki moment because it was just the first fragment of their blossoming romance."

Also Kaname loved her sure, but he was anything but the best lover for her. She felt "tied" to him because of guilt and obligation, she was also emotionally manipulated to remain at his side. She only dies to give him life because honestly she was done living on her own, without Zero and felt she'd run her race and why not give Kaname a chance at life so that he could see what it was like for her? Doing so would of course alter his vampiric nature to that of a mortal just how Juuri had done for her which also means he'd never recall being a Pureblood. So his betraying her by getting a family and having a child isn't viable. She'd want him to be happy.
