With all the hype surrounding Elfen Lied all I could muster up about the anime was a big "meh". Now, don't get me wrong, I understood the message the story was attempting to deliver and it was very powerful and heart wrenching. But, it seemed to me that the story was told without much explanation as to "why" things happened as they did and when there was an explanation it was forced and incomplete. This anime is seriously so terrible that I was ashamed to put this on my list, but it's the only way I could write a review on this abomination.
I don't think that I've once seen anything so bad as this, I was watching this while eating lunch one day and I actually lost my appetite. I'm all for subtle fan service (as subtle as it gets in anime at any rate) but this goes far above and beyond anything within reason. After playing the Shuffle! visual novel (which is, uh, a little less innocent than expected) I wasn't sure what to expect from the anime. What I got out of the anime that wasn't expressed in the visual novel was a much more intense and uncertain story line, which I enjoyed thoroughly. The first half starts out as you would expect any harem/comedy anime to start which brings a sense of undeniable comfort, however, the second half takes and unexpected twist (depending on whether you've played the novel and your definition of unexpected) and leaves you guessing, which is quite refreshing for an anime style that

Truly the most beautiful and heart-breaking anime series I've ever seen. Key did something with this anime that I could never hope to explain and drew me into the story in an unparalleled fashion. I felt myself becoming a part of the story and almost every episode had a scene that brought a tear to my eye.
This series has made me think about who I am and who I want to be like nothing else ever has. I would watch this every day if I thought I could bear the sadness. |
