Like most people I first entered the anime fandom through the Dragonball series, followed by a long love affair with Adult Swim and Toonami anime. It hasn't been until the last year that I've had a fast enough connection speed to actually download anime and the selection at my previous library branch was pretty slim. Luckily, both of these problems have been solved and I now chug through anime by at least one series per week.
I'm partial towards dark, psychological animes with a focus on melodramatic character development. Though I couldn't exactly fit them onto my top five list Now and Then Here and There, Elfen Lied, and Boogiepop Phantom are all within my top ten. If you know anything thematically similar to these animes please feel free to recommend.
Note: By far my favorite manga stories can be found within Berserk's "Golden Age Arc" and the horror manga Monster.

You should also check Ga-Rei Zero. A really good anime and it has a little feeling of similarity with Kara no Kyoukai.

The character is Alice from Pandora Hearts or else known as "B-Rabbit or Black Rabbit". The show has some dark elements that you will probably appreciate. Unfortunately the story in the anime was cut with a silly ending and the manga has some really bad translated chapters especially around 12-18.
If you are interested in the show a good choice will be to watch the anime and then continue with the manga. Chapters 30-31 will be a good place to get in the manga. Take notice the last events in the anime never happen in the manga.
The show gives you a sense of feeling like it's a different, black distorted, dark mystery version of Alice in wonderland with action shounen comedy drama elements.
