Well, the issue of its popularity, for me anyway, predates those series. Live in the US, southern Louisiana. Born in Acadiana, but live around New Orleans.
This characters nickname was Shinigami, thought it was pretty cool, but so many other people did, too. Since that name was taken pretty much everywhere, I modified it using my basic knowledge of Japanese. It just inspired the name, now I use it because of how long I've had it.
Been using it since around 1998, when I was teaching my self some Japanese. Loved Gundam Wing at the time and liked how shinigami sounded, but the name was taken everywhere. I swapped out the shi for ka, to imply god of fire.
My understanding now is that's incorrect, and that crab god is more accurate.
