If you've read all the chapters of a manga that have been released then you can just look up the series on a site like honto or amazon, find the latest volume number, and input that as the volume count.

Of course, there are several things that can make this system break down, for instance:
- if you read scanlations (as opposed to reading from the original source that the manga is serialised in), it is common for the scanlator to be a long way behind the actual release of the manga
- some series don't actually have numbered volumes
- the series may not be sold on the site in question
- there may be multiple versions of the series with the same name, and it may not be clear which one you are reading.

Of course, if you aren't up to speed with the series then the only thing I can think of is to ask someone who owns the volumes (or to buy them yourself of course) - then again, sometimes there are multiple ways of counting the chapters, so it may not be clear to the person you are talking to which you are using. For example Nukoduke! has a chapter count online (which is the one I'm using) which is different to that used by the volumes (which is closer to the one you are using), which is why I made this thread here. That isn't very common, though, except when scanlators make up chapter numbers that don't actually exist...

Yeah, the chapters are really short so the first volume has 24 chapters in it. It's quite a thin volume as well.

How have you read 7 volumes of Nukoduke! when only 1 has been released?
It’s time to ditch the text file.
